I use my DVD-R to burn movies, that's why I got it. I think most comsumers buy them for that reason also, and then discover them for backing up data.
There are definatly compatibilty problems though. Not every (consumer level) player will play them (most do).
I think DVD's suck. They can get scratched. Nuff said.
Oh. And to the guy who asked "how often do you have to back up 8 CD's for a project, anyway", that depends on your project. In my case, too often.
"All's fair in love and war" (and buisness). Sony's console department might hate MS's console department, but they do see eye to eye in other areas. I'm sure there are other examples also.
You appear to be correct (Random Access Memory Digital-to-Analog Converter). I guess I meant faster RAM and faster clockspeeds as compared to faster system-to-card bandwidth.
I think you make a very good point, and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.
To many cool projects get bitten by a lack of marketing/presentation, more so in the open source world. Been to the GNU site recently? Ugly as hell. There's a good reason people will pay a premium for Macs.
IIRC, ASCII White and other uber-machines have a flat memory model, and data is just shuffled real fast behind the scenes. So, in effect, your card can access memory on other machines.
In reality though, one node would have more than enough RAM to hold all the scene info, RAM that could be written to by many nodes, freeing your disply node to simply render. You're right though, I'll take a faster RAMDAC over AGP 16x anytime (for the next few years at least).
First you get modded 'redundant' for posting your opinion. Then you get modded 'troll' for pointing out that, no, in fact you've been here longer than any of us.
Keep on keeping on man, and send Taco an email telling him to get rid of the negitive mods.
If you don't get Nethack, you might not ever, but before you decide....
Play at least 30 games. The multitude of actions you can do at any time is huge. This leads to very open-ended gameplay, with no two games the same. You'll die 20 times on the 3rd level, and next game you outwit some 15th level monster and walk away with a wicked weapon, etc. It's highly rewarding.
Other things I love about Nethack; It's net-aware and Unix friendly, delivering emails via messengers and other neato tricks. It runs on the console, and it has a wacked sense of humor, in the best tradition of oldskool Unix hacking.
And who the hell are you??? The guy posts one post, mildy funny, but obviously a joke. You use your elite point and click skills to do some sleuthing, and then deliver judgment. Why would you turn this into something personal ?? I've visited your site, I have my own opinions about what I think you might be. And I didn't see a PhD in your C.V.
To all the people who posted to this story with 'fucking vigilanties','screw the hippies' and the like.
Go visit some place where industrial development has existed without enviromental concerns. Like China, the ex-U.S.S.R, or East Germany. Is that what you want to live in? I don't think so.
If you want to piss in your bathtub, go ahead, but if I catch you pissing in _our_ bathtub.....
Well, because microsoft doesn't release code _is_ a vaild answer. It'd be great to have a fast, full-featured, OpenSource browser.
That said, I'm typing this on ie on OS X. I also use ie on my windows box. I use it 'cause it works, mostly.
One interesting place it doesn't work (at least on os X) is a link I discovered last night. It's a test page for png files. Instant segfault, heh.
The original story didn't make much sense.Seeing that the room for payload in sputnik-2 was probably on the order of 20lbs, how could she have lived for a few weeks without food and water?
I think you got it in your question. Linux is more quickly progressing. Basing the future of Apple on such a mecurial OS might not be the best thing to do.
The BSD development process is slow and steady. It doesn't have 4 different threading models in the tree. It puts stability above new features. All good things for Apple.
Just what I was thinking. I know you could do a lot of tweaking to get SuSe to run faster, but I bet there's not much you could do with OSX, seeing as it's running on Apple hardware.
Still, an impressive showing for OSX. I think Apple's strength over the next several years will continue to be the desktop, but it looks like they might do well in the server market also.
Oh yeah, I also think the Xserve is on of the most desirable pieces of hardware on the planet. They're purrty.
Well, the xserves are a very sweet package for the price. Fast, low power, low heat, small, good looking(for clients) and very reliable. I havn't done the full cost-benifit analysis, but I think they would come out well against many cheaper Intel based solutions.
The description of a Microsoft rep criticizing MS's practices was very interesting. But I can't understand any of this. Would someone who types.de care to translate some of the jucier bits?
I simply don't understand people. How is this offtopic? It's my opinion damit!! And why the hell do people mod down anyway?? Modding stuff up pushes other stuff down, so it must be cause you're little bitches.Sigh....
I love/. but it makes me cringe when I see bad jokes, pro-MS, or alternate opinions modded down.
And yes this is totally OT, but your mod points are more usefull elsewhere...it's gonna get modded down anyway, though, lol.
Well, if your looking for an OS to run a datacenter with, OS X is not your best choice. But is you use a GUI to interface with other machines, it is.
I use XP on one machine for playing games. Other than that, I was useing the console on linux boxen for everything, having found that X-windows didn't help me get work done any faster and I kept losing xterm windows.
And then I met OS X. I'm not going to list the 101 reasons why I'm in love, but I will say you owe it to yourself to spend a week with it and find out what the hype is about.

Licensing and sound quality. Simple. Still, that's not going to be enough for quite a long while. If you're happy w/mp3s (as I am) stick with it.

Thanks 20wordsummary! 20 words on the dot!
Of course, seeing as how Google news links to alot of /. stories, maybe something could be worked out.
Or, you can just get the damn account at NYT. It's quick, and it's a quality site.
Oh yeah..... piracy bad, good for China. See, I am OT.
I've seen level 18, on an adreniline fueled, 'stepping on eggshells' trip to the depths. I can't remember how I died, but it was quick and nasty....

What do you call a white guy who only speaks one language? American.
Not everyone has gone got an english education.

It would have been nice though.....

Sorry, but this just doesn't qualify as news. Science, yes. But even as science it's just another tiny step towards our nano-tech-utopia fantasy.
