Ok, if the military is so worried about static charge buildup on your ass when taking a shit on your F16, why do they use NT on there ships???? Does MS crap really deserve a MIL specification.
Open Source Vendor:
Profit: somewhere between 500,000 and 4,000,000
Labor: $500,000
Hardware: $1,500,000
Software Licenses: Free
If it comes to a bidding war for a fixed priced project, the OS vendor should easily win and make more profit. The client pays less, the vendor makes more profit, and the tax payer saves money (I won't even get into government security:). If you do fixed price projects with proprietary software, someone else is eating your lunch!
Hopefully my career path will be like Gates' (except for the draconian tactics of course!). Create software company, make billions (or at least be able to retire early/comfortable!), be the chief software architect. Let someone else do stuff like marketing and running the company.
A quick check of Kazaa on Friday afternoon showed that there were 4.1 million users online
4.1 million * $250,000 ~= 1 trillion
Cool, now we can pay off the national debt and pay for the tax cut. Oh wait, the national debt is 6.4 trillon. Better raise the fine to a couple million!
I think Sun/Java is a lesser of two evils. It would be wonderful if there were a totally open/cross-platform way to develop client side applications as easily as you can in Java, but right now their isn't. In the interim, widespread Java adoption on the client will make it easier for people to move to Linux and still run all their applications.
Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I think liberal people would be against sales tax and more for progressive income tax. If all tax revenue came from sales, rich people would make out much better than they do now with the progressive income tax. (Not that it would ever work, but I'd like to see a progressive sales tax - the more you consume, the higher the sales tax is.)
Maybe the same reason why many people are still using Windows - because it takes effort to move something better/different. (No offense to OS2, personally I don't know anything about it.)
I worked in the game industry for about two years. In my experience you are correct. Long hours (I once worked 24 hours straight!), low pay, and potentially unstable depending on how well funded your project is. The work is very interesting and challenging which is probably one reason why the pay is lower. I think it's pretty ironic that I make over twice as much now doing brain-dead business apps. Another reason I think the pay is lower is that people think you'll go to work and play games all day (see how much fun your having after trying to find a bug in a game for 24 hours straight!).
Yes, as the job market has tightened I've been noticing a lot of interesting requirements. Bizarre things like two years of US experience or 7 years of Java experience. Kind of reminds me of the good old days a couple of years ago when I would not call people back based on the sound of their voice or if they didn't have an 800 number.
That's great that your wouldn't take advantage of the H1B worker's position and pay them less. Unfortunately I don't think many companies would do the same. I know that I make 50% more than two similarly qualified H1B workers on my project. Also, I haven't noticed any trend towards H1s being smarter than Americans, although there aren't many Americans left to compare to.
How long is that going to last, until someone decides to implement a superior technology
It's called Java:) Yea, I know Swing is slow (but improving), but it runs fine on my 800Mhz iMac, and runs awesome on my 2.4Mhz Linux machine. For cross platform, free (beer) GUI development I don't think you can beat it.

That's what keeps us programmers employed. It's a big conspiracy!
Changing resolution on RedHat 8.0:
1) Start Menu -> System Settings -> Display
2) select radio button resolution.
Windows 98:
1) Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel
2) double click display
3) click settings tab
4) slide to resolution
Also, MSOffice + Windows is ~$600 to $700 - over half of the average Indians yearly income! I'm sure there will be people like you find Windows more productive, but it's obvious MS will need to drop their prices as more people/governments switch.
Even if this is true (I highly doubt it's better than any product!), OpenOffice is good enough for 99% of the people out there. And there are lots of people out there that can't afford or don't want to afford $500 for MS Office. Enjoy MS Office while it's still around!
I think the only real reason someone would do this would be to play games on it. IMO, Linux is just as good or better for everything else. But why not just keep Linux and buy a GameCube for $150 that will probably have better gaming performance anyway? Small price to pay to stay legal and not have to run a crappy insecure OS.
It seems like there will be a large gap between the content on.kids and everything else. High school kids will only get to see view the same stuff as 5 year olds! I think it would be better if your site were rated by a large number of people and given a floating point rating. Then you could set your filtering based on how mature your kids are and your parenting preferences. (Also, I'd like to filter out some sites myself - I had a bad experience a few days ago trying to find dicks sporting goods!)
A committed socialist, he distrusted capitalism and communism in equal measure and believed that "world government" was the only way to control nuclear weapons and eventually abolish war entirely.
Seems like Einstein would like to see UN weapons inspections for all countries. Personally I'd sleep better if all weapons of mass destruction were banned and all countries were subject to inspection. Let's not wait for millions of people to die before we consider this!
That might be a good argument if the proprietary software wasn't inherently flawed. There is no way for the DOD to know if a propriety software program contains spyware or insecure code. With open source they can do a secuirty audit on the code that they use.
As a buckeye cable customer I certainly will be looking at other alternatives. If all this takes is a simple software config change it seems your modem could possibly get set up wrong. Or what happens if someone hacks your modem to go at high speed, then calls the FBI! Not that I like people stealing my band width, but it's no reason to go to jail.

How about profit. For example:
Proprietary Vendor:
Profit: $500,000
Labor: $500,000
Hardware: $1,500,000
Software Licenses (profit for someone else!): $3,500,000
or
Open Source Vendor:
Profit: somewhere between 500,000 and 4,000,000
Labor: $500,000
Hardware: $1,500,000
Software Licenses: Free

In addition to Swing and SWT there are also other cool Java client API's.
Java 2D For doing lots of fun stuff with antialiased text, fonts, composting, etc.
Java Advanced Imaging For advanced image processing
Java Media Framework For capture, playback, and streaming of audio and video.
VHS tapes don't get scratched and skip like DVD's. You can fast forward through copyright notices at will.
I love MySQL, too, but I wouldn't want to use it as the backend for _my_ system.
Why not? MySQL seems to stack up pretty well against Oracle from everything that I've read. Slashdot seems to run pretty well on it.

In my case I operate a public safety system, a 911 dispatch center. Our radio consoles and recording system all use Windows NT and 2K.
Hope I don't get in an accident any time soon:)

Obviously though for burn victims it a good option.
Look at Michael Jackson. It may look good at first, but eventually age catches up with you, then you could look worse than before.
