bah.. its proof enough. Its not as if the MPAA are downloading the entire file off of each client/IP to check they are sharing that particular file. They are just getting the hashes etc,. The trackers keep track of what the client has up'd and down'd, this will only be recorded if the correct bytes are uploaded to other clients and reported as such.

Of course, it makes it difficult to sort by relevance *within* a date range.

Sell that crap on the MSN web page or something, spamming their own software detracts from the usability of the program. This isnt a web page we are talking about. They have basically taken a program and made it into an ad delivery piece of software. They are trying to encourage people to use it to use the MSN network, no one wants to sign up to be spammed. There are many ad-free alternatives. They could spam IE with heaps of hardcoded shopping links etc, but they let the user remove them. The IM software field is not much different from the browsers in this respect.

They have huge numbers of developers, testers, researchers etc to decide what should go in and how. The colour of the taskbar in Windows wasnt just randomly picked by Bill "hmm, lets make it blue", they would have had researchers and testers etc to decide what it should be. The same goes with every little detail in Windows. Its not based on what some guy think would be best, but typically by what the research shows would be the best So, there is a committee deciding what should go into Windows, its just that its pretty much Microsoft employees - but at least they seek outside consultation etc.

although granted using PKI isnt really necessary to protect the key. They could just hand you a serial number, and when you quote this they lookup and give you the respective key/cd-key thats used to decrypt your copy. It would still involve having a uniquely encrypted version though.

While this thought was the first thing to come to mind for me, and probably lots of other people, I dont think its such a huge deal. It requires you to download a copy of the game, and illegally unlock it. Its not really any different to getting a cracked copy from p2p.

And id imagine everyone gets a uniquely encrypted version with a different public key, and they give you that public key. You quote the public key to valve/steam whatever, and they give you the private key.

So it actually prevents piracy a little bit, as people would download this encrypted version - realise they cant crack it without paying - then choose to just pay for the key rather than download a cracked copy and waste bandwidth and time.

The point of the security center is so you dont get that malicious code running on your system in the first place. If it does, your systrem is already compromised, and nothing can be trusted anyway.

No OS can protect against malicious code running as root/admin.

If you are able to trick a person into running stuff as admin on their system, thats a social engineering attack, not a weakness in the OS.

But more importantly, if you can do that, why would you waste time editing the config to report the system as secure? So you can make the system less secure and therefore attack it???? uhm... arent you already running code as admin on their box in the first place?

why do you need to make changes to WMI? If you want to do that (god knows why?), you could completely uninstall the security center and install your own trojan version. You are running as admin anyway. Typical anti-ms bashing bs. imho.
