Obviously free software is good but if a company is worried about the "viral nature" of the GPL they need to have some assurance that when they work with free software they are not going to get their code displayed for all to see. Ya the Transgaming people made a deal with the devil, get over it.

You are spot on. I am 16 years old working my first job and people would say i don't pay taxes. I pay all the taxes that apply to me. I do not pay income tax in my state but some states might be different. Also I pay into social security, medicare, and labor and industries taxes. Also, I my money to buy things that I pay sales tax on. I have perchased items that had been imported and might have had a tariff imposed. We all know that costs are passed onto the consumers so i was paying that tariff, therefore i was paying the government. By participating in the economy in any way you are paying taxes.

It's rediculous how as a 16 year old you can drive a car and pay taxes but can't vote. It is taxation without representation in my opinion and that is why the founders of this country took up arms and fought back. Ill stick with posting to internet forums myself but the whole thing is kind of rediculous.

Students are absolutly second class citizens. Remember also that many high school students are 18 years old and they still have the same lack of rights.

It all comes down to this: no matter what, you must pay.

That's the idea behind currency. Everything you recieve someone had to work for. If you want to get anything other people want something in return. Currency allows us to trade our time and labor through a standard way. If you have something you are not paying for it is indeed lucky but also remember nobody is GETTING payed for that. Air is pretty much the only thing that takes food off somebodies table when you get for free.

With all that said, I am getting more cynical too. Disconnect fees are in my opinion against the spirit of currency and economics. I know that it is indeed a contract mutually agreed upon by 2 parties but its just rediculous. Someone should not be paying unless they are getting something. When people fork over money just "becuase the contract says so" it does not produce any new goods or services, it just makes someone wealthier.

Anyone who has a basic understanding of logic and the english language can understand that copyright infringement and theft are 2 similar but different things. Obviously the original owner is not deprived of anything with the infringement but that is over simplifying it. Ecomonists would refer to the opportunity cost of infringement. Unrealized income is almost the same and having income stolen but once again, there is an important but slight difference.

The main reason that "infringement is the same as theft" arguement does not hold up very well is becuase you can't prove that there was an opportunity cost for the copyright holder. It is quite possible that the person who recieved the illegal copy was going to pay and now is not, but that is not always the case. Becuase it is very easy to acquire a lot of music for free many people's consumption of music goes up. People who might have owned only a dozen albums in the past may now own a few more. These people probably wouldn't have payed for the music or tried to get it unless it was free.

The RIAA is pushing too hard to convince people that every copied song is the same as theft, and the downloaders are trying to argue that every downloaded song probably wasn't money for them anyway. The truth is somewhere in the middle and sadly both sides end up wrong when they claim these extreme scenarios are 100% true.

They also won't feel motivated to do things for other people just becuase it's nice. Now this doesn't mean they won't do nice things, often many people with a brain like this do either as a form of manipulation to benefit themselves OR simply becuase society instructs people to be kind and that is a strong influence over everyone's actions.

This happens in certain conditions like autism but it also exists in the normal healthy population at an alarming rate. 1% of people just can't care, its just not possible, when you take that into consideration it puts a lot of experiances with rude people into perspective. The vast majority of these people are normal people who act properly around others, most of them have learned social rules to behave nicely towards others but sometimes when it comes to them making their own choice about how to treat others they msot likely will not care at all.

That is just it. DRM is not about locking down some pirates. People have been pirating music and movies for years now and the industry is doing fine.

From a business perspective all the RIAA and MPAA want to do is maximize the money they take in. What is better for maximizing the money coming in; squashing the relativly small number of pirates out there and getting them to fork over the cash for their content OR would it make them more money to simply squeeze a little more money out of the relativly large group of people who pay for their content. Of course they are going after the bigger market, they are trying to move to a pay per use market simply becuase it will make them more money. It has been known tha tpsychologically if someone pays per use they end up paying more while perceiving that they payed the same.
