Hegel had it right when he said "the only thing we learn from history is that we don't learn from history."

That quote has a nice ring to it but that's about it. Unfortunately history repeats itself. The rise and fall of empires is a cycle that has gone on over and over for sometimes very similar reasons. This is a good thing to read about right now as the American empire is possibly on the decline with several possible new empires rising (China or the EU). Lets please not go off topic about what you think the fate of the American empire will be. That is just one discussion that is going on today where history is crucial to an understanding of what is happening now.

Also the current American foreign policy didn't happen out of nowhere when Bush took office. We as Americans wonder why the government does certain things and i would argue that the reasons are clear if you look at what we have done before.

I work as a Sous Chef in a French Restaurant in Seattle. We do get many of our cheese's imported from France of Italy but there are some very good American cheeses. Some people complain that American cheese isn't as good as French cheese but it is just not true. It is just as good only different. Italian cheese is not the same as French cheese but most people assume European cheese is all good. I taste test different cheeses for the restaurant and I have had some very bad European cheese. The same goes for wine or beer. American gourmet food tastes different but that is a good thing. We wouldn't want to try and beat the French at making French cheese, that would not work. Instead American producers create their own style that has come around to much acclaim for example in the wine world.

You can find many great food and drink producers all over America. You can't say that Australia doesn't have any good beer just because Foster's is from there.I wont list any wineries because that is one topic that IS covered very well. A short list of companies I recommend follows:

Dogfish Head Brewery (my favorite beers)
    Redhook Ale Brewery
    Fish Tale Ales (organic beers)
    Stone Brewing Co.

    Juniper Grove Farm
    Rogue Creamery (excellent blue cheese)

That is from the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) website. So where is the outrage about that? Nobody reports DUI in the news because it is not abnormal in our society to have so many people die. It is terrible wrong but it has gotten normal for us. 68 people die in 40 years and that somehow really hits home to a lot of people. People are scared, some talk about more gun control, some want less. Sweeping changes are proposed. Not to diminish the pain of the victims and their families of these shootings but we as a society can save a lot more lives and families if we go after something that is a bigger problem than essentially random sporadic crime.

It has already been mentioned before that crime is what is all over TV and unless a photogenic child dies most people wont ever hear about it.
