In the apology, (page 1 even), he misspells Rene Descartes as Renee Descartes (thats the feminine of the name). Look, I know its mathematics, but really, proof read it dude!
At ITShare SA take donated hardware, install Linux, and donate to low income groups and individuals....We have sister organisations all over Australia tooo, doing the same. We would LOVE to get donations from Dell & HP of all these stockpiled computers - we are always desperate for hardware. No licencing issues! Ongoing supports for recipients! Win Win!!!
As one of our volunteers is doing, developing Tetun versions for East Timor....such developments are actually MUCH more likely in Linux. Computerbank Victoria is shipping Farsi boxes....I would suggest to you there would be more possibility of FOSS than commercial software for such limited 'customer base'....
ItShare SA, Computer Angels, and Computerbank Australia, are related groups in Australia doing this already - but with Linux. We provide safer systems accordingly, without the need for third party software to be paid for - such as Open Office etc. Having a donated Windows box is all well and good (Now, I don't actually think its that good..;) ), but what about the unsupported nature of Win98, the virus and other security issues, and the need to pay for third party software (unless someone points them towards OO, and other FOSS for Windows...).
On behalf of ITShare/Computerbank Sth Australia, we would like to thank the organisers of LinuxConfAu...We are an Open Source Non Profit group, who take donated hardware, refurbish it, put Linux on, and donate it to low income groups and individuals.
We received AU$3600 towards a van, and also Linus sweetened the pot by adding the rights to having your name on the next kernel release.....
People also donated AU$2000+ in cash on the night. Incredible generosity!
the whole point of the 419s is the way they offer to rip off the current gvt of a country and smuggle cash out - usually impoverished economies.this guy thought his 'friends' werent 'criminals' when they offered him a chance to rip off a country? be real. telling everyone he intended to 'do good' with it - well, that makes it ok, does it? and ok, hes in his 70s. so is my dad - and boy, would he tell this guy he'd been a greedy sod. $320,000 - that would have kept him comfy. ignoring the police - thats just bloody minded. sorry, but my sympathy gland doesnt ignore his greed because of his age. aint no money for nuthin, peeps.
much you know:) neither the man nor i have beards or beer guts (i am a barefoot organic gardening hippy mother of five, 17yo to 4 mths...) but i run debian, he runs freebsd, well, besides the other linux boxes and the bds beowulf cluster and 2 evil winboxen in our network.
if the kids want to try to break our network, i welcome them trying - id be so proud!

its dropping off! but the site is coping well -so far
*evil grin*
the whole ambiguous sexual aspect of the doctor was part of his alienness, anyway. geez, look at how crappy the appalling movie was* with its crap of trying to make the doctor half human, and attracted to grace. saints preserve us, NO!
*paul mcgann WAS a great doctor, bad script not his fault!
Look at it - virii tend to clog up systems, waste resources, and are bandwidth hogs. They are unwanted, and often involve mass mail outs from email addresses harvested without consent. They can cause the collapse of recipient mail systems by sheer volume.
Now replace the word 'virii' with 'spam'. See?
given the average income vs cost of computers, that these guys didnt just bring along all their dead and crusty old hardware to beat - leaving the good stuff safely at home?
Bet they zoomed home to see if they appeared online;)
...to be the first link in the food chain for when we start cloning the dinosaurs again!
Damn.
*makes note to self: stop giving away evil world domination plans - it RUINS the surprise for everyone!*
I can't see companies suddenly rushing out to switch to Linux from this alone. The recent virii, worms, and trojans have had a cumulative effect, and this will add to it, but I can't see it making a difference on its own.

damn, just when i want some REASONED analysis of this, groklaw is having php grumbles...

We have sent systems to East Timor, including a volunteer to teach a core group who can then provide support..so YES, it does happen
