    GSM is the US is pretty backwards so far, but as long as you are in AT&T serviced areas your coverage should be better or at least the same. just get a phone that does both 850mhz and 1900mhz, don't skimp on the 850.

    iptables is stateful, in the sense that you can tell it to both filter certain ports, and only allow outgoing connections on certain ports, instead of just allowing all traffic. so in this sense, netfilter remembers which application sent the request and only allows replies to it. Far more configurable than zonealarm and their ilk, though those certainly have their place.

    Not entirely, if you want to upgrade with a newer version of glibc and/or gcc you have to rebuild the toolchain as well first. Not a big deal though, and they have instructions on www.gentoo.org

    3G is third generation GSM, which is an entirely different animal from CDMA.

    You can tunnel VNC through SSH though, making it quite secure (and, as an added bonus, faster through compression). The old VNC site even used to recommend it.

    Redhat is using a 2.4 kernel compiled with 3.2-something right now... as am I

    I'd say it's just paranoia (the kernel of course being the most important thing to compile correctly, next to glibc, and gcc itself).

    It's true though! If copyrighted images, lossily compressed and shrunk for viewing online, are legal... ...shouldn't music files, lossily compressed, also be legal? Or is it the magnitude of compression they are refering to? I suppose a 1024x768 jpeg of someone's artwork isn't covered...
