"By putting their faith in Facebook to weed out the malcontents, many sites literally destroy their comment sections."
Who's to say that isn't what was intended? I'm sure many sites would like to get rid of user comments. "Just pay for our content. We don't need no talkback, especially if it is critical."
“The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda. Perceiving the truth has always been a challenge to mankind, but in the information age (or as I think of it, the disinformation age) it takes on a special urgency and importance.” - Michael Crichton
“It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” - Mark Twain
With modern scanners and computational power it should be easy to scan the serial numbers off all those pennies in real time, so I bet you couldn't get away with that trick these days.
Yeesh, I had to scroll down through many foaming-at-the-mouth furious True Believers to get to your reasonable comment. Some people are really frightened and angry. I think the fact that some others refuse to agree with them challenges their religious beliefs or something.
Why aren't you concerned, worried and demanding something be done about this? You're supposed to be concerned, worried and demanding something be done about this. You must be a bad person or something. And because you aren't concerned, worried and demanding something be done about this, and are a bad person, you deserve to be viciously attacked.
And what is happening more now is the replacement of human thinking. One discipline/systems expert, or more likely a few of them, accompanied by a dozen programmers can literally put millions of people out of work (or at least make their existing jobs marginally valuable and thus disposable during the next economic downturn).
And yes, there will be some people necessary for the design and maintenance of new automation, but nowhere near the amount of people needed previously.
Well, that's great. Now everyone knows you're going from one gambling city to another so will likely have lots of money on hand. Watch out in Tonopah for highway robbers.
We are running out of people who know how to do lots of things without the aid of software. If you didn't have your computer, how would you post to Slashdot?
How much money was there to be gained by the people promoting the moon landing hoax? I think you'll find that many people will go along with dubious/nebulous theories if there's financial gain involved. Cue the accusations of Denier!
What, when and where are these huge impacts? Since we don't know these slightly important details, what should be done besides adaptation that won't involve "disassembling capitalism" and creating a worldwide all-powerful regulatory authority? Humans are really good at adaptation.

Shhhh, you're disrupting the narrative - trillions of government dollars could be lost!
Remember Brandolini's Law: "The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it."
"Reality must take precedence over public relations, for Mother Nature cannot be fooled." -- R.P. Feynman
"To me, all of them are great scientists, regardless of race."

I guess that means YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT WOMEN, HUH?
Yeah, and while you're at it, read the US Tax Code before you come to me and bitch about how high your taxes are.
April 1st would have been better though.
But it's profitable for everyone except the taxpayer.
I think these two quotes are relevant:
“The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda. Fuck you and you're "grammo's".
"Proved" vs. "probably". What is this, climate science?

However, these days, electronic theft on a large scale happens and nobody hears about it. Because:
- don't want to encourage further attempts
- don't want to admit to security breach
This can cover up huge insider shenanigans.

The pump(s) containing the impellers would be located onshore.

"If uninformed alarmists like you would ever shut the hell up and actually learn something..."
But that wouldn't be nearly as easy, self-righteous and ego-flattering as "saving the planet" now, would it?
Alarmists inevitably are easily frightened types, politically-motivated, seeking attention or useful idiots (or any combination of these).
Didn't the patent language used to be something like, "...non-obvious to someone reasonably informed about the field of business..."

So then, what is needed is a planned economy. Right?
Well, that's great. Now everyone knows you're going from one gambling city to another so will likely have lots of money on hand. Watch out in Tonopah for highway robbers.
"I'm old enough to have learned how to..."
We are running out of people who know how to do lots of things without the aid of software. If you didn't have your computer, how would you post to Slashdot?
Your comment was modded 'Interesting' but I'd call it very 'Insightful' as well.

Hey, this story isn't about climate change!
"That can have a huge impact."
