  1. Contingency thought of! on Beagle 2 Failure Theories · · Score: -1, Troll
    From the article:
That idea is supported by evidence from NASA, which also reported a less-dense atmosphere than expected on the entry of its first rover, Spirit, on Jan. 3. NASA succeeded in getting its vehicle down safely because of Spirit's multiple chutes and robust air bag system.

So basically we're saying that the European retards didn't retard enough? ;) Ah well, it seems that this a case where engineers behind the scenes of Spirit would snicker and say, ha ha guys, we thought of that one!... if they happend to be the childish and petty type ;)

  6. Anti-rpg? on Jarvis On Robotron, Defender, Acolytes · · Score: 1, Insightful

I realized, as I was reading this article, that his defintion of fun is sort of against the RPG elements. I really love Gran Turismo (the best car RPG ever), and it's precisely for the reasons he didn't like about them : i.e. the realism and the challenge of driving things properly. I mean, hey, one can only drive so much in multiplayer Crusin' ____ before you find yourself yell, "that's total bull@#$%!"
I do think that the fun and gameplay are obvously important to games and are somewhat lacking in recent games... but if we have the processing power to make 'Gran Tursimo n' and give its cars the most accurate physics models and graphical detail while driving around real life courses without actually having to pay the huge amounts of money that real touring racing would take, then I'm all for it.
If you want to fun, twitchy, yet completely unrealistic racer, why don't you just make the car invulerable to wall hits, and increase your speed. Hell, just play Fzero or all those Tube-Racer-type futuristc car genre games.

Jeez, I last used a gopher client nine years ago, when I was an incoming frosh in college and had no idea what http, ftp, or gopher meant. I recall that at the time, people were still using gopher for researching things, but that was quickly tapering off. We all were starting to use web search engines like infoseek or lycos or altavista (or was that more recent) to do research for school projects.

Now my neighbors will really hate me. I'll be tapping on the tatacon (or whatever they decide to call the Taiko controller out here,) all night until my wrists snap off.

I love these 'rhythm' games. I wish thouh that there would be a bonus for creativity like in the original Parappa. You could actually make taps between the beats shown on the screen. So I would just tap along at anywhere from double time to octuple time between beats and end up getting crazy ratings. You can''t do that in freq and amplitude (you can do freestyle of course, but that's not the same), and in Gitaroo-man, it doesn't seem to matter.

Of course, if the quick taping was included TnT, then my neigbbors would start kicking the walls of my apartment down.

Anyways, I think that the internet has people be more communicative simply because it's the laziest form of communication. ytalk/irc/IM/MMORPG-ing is simply the easiest way for fat lazy bums like me to keep in touch with everyone. If arpanet never happend, then I suppose I would be still have to do what I did 10 years ago to socialize; drive/bike over to friends' places or pay expensive long distance bills to talk with distant relatives/friends.

The internet is makes us more social but less lazy. I'm not at all conviced this is good.

It would be a mmorpg, with you as a recruit. There would already be a hierarchy, with Tyler at the top. You would have to complete tasks, and submit a story to the effect of what/how you did your task. It is then reviewed by your superior, and depending on the believabilty of the story or simply the greatness of your story. Of course, this could all be B.S.-able by people, but it would be more interesting if people didn't and the game was subversive.

  15. Istari story is very important on Wired's LOTR III Tech Breakdown · · Score: 1
From the standpoint of the movies, the Saruman plot is finished, over, and done with. The seven minute scene you refer to is NOT important to the overall plot of the move: getting the ring to Mordor. You can argue all you want, but I remember hearing the same things when people complained about the removal of Tom from the Fellowship.

I don't know about you, but after reading the books (even after the nth time nowadays), this scene was/is very striking and powerful. The fact that Saruman had been finally been cornered, the revealing of Gandalf as white to him, the shattering of his staff, the realization of the evils of the palantir, and even the slinking away of Wormtounge... I mean, those images (in my mind at least) are very powerful. I realize that putting the Istari plotline would be far too time consuming (you'd start having to deal with Silmarillion history) It's just that after thousands of years of existance, the order of the wizards was finally changed with Gandalf taking the head of the group. This can be potentially used as a 'building up' piece, to let people know how unbelevably powerful Sauron is, rather than just showing us the angry cat's eye and some huge giant armored thing swatting soldiers around (FOTR). Showing the audiences how powerful these characters are can help to just accentuate the disparity of power between Sauron and a weak Frodo. That greater appreciation (and depth in story) makes things more powerful to the audience.

It's too bad that we just have time to hint at the second age... It would have been great if there was time to cover the light of the trees; Melkor; the powerful ancient elves. I for one would be more interested in seeing a history that covered the Second age... but that will probably not happen for a long time :( Someone should really make a short miniseries on it. I mean, they had all those primetime live action fatasy tales on NBC a few years ago, why not take the best parts of the Silmarillion and the lost tales?

In any case, Tom Bombadil was an interesting sidenote that was skipped but made sense (Tom always stayed independent of the rest of the world, therefore skipping him was not a problem).

  25. gender neutral on On Gaming, Girls, And Germane Genres · · Score: 1

Some anime animators draw everything very very gender neutral. So in some cases it's not that the "guy charatcters are cute" (and of course the girl ones), where it's just the case that every darn character is drawn in the cute bishojo/bishonen style. Well, ok not EXACTLY the same, but it's like the guys are just girls with fuller faces and long bangs. It's funny how in those series where if you pause the vid and cover their hair up, you can't tell male or female. Like kare-kano. As a guy, it's just disturbing when I see stuff like that.
IIRC, Vagrant story or Valkyrie Profile for the PSX was were gender netural (appearing) RPGs.
