my point was, if there was any chance of it being helpful to anyone, that was better than just destroying the whole thing. it's sorta like donating your body to science for the betterment of humanity(ethical/moral issues aside).
it would be nice if it was GPL'ed because, even if no one used it, the openoffice, koffice and abiword people can pick up bits and pieces and make theirs better.
wonder if he's smart enough to filter his own address out of his spam. I say we just post his email address everyone and let other spam harvesters take care of it. wouldn't that be ironic if all the spam he was getting was coming from himself?:)
they're enemies. sony knows that office and windows are the cash cows for microsoft. sony knows that if microsoft starts hurting there, they can't afford to keep pissing money away on the xbox, sony's direct competition...
it's a street fight, and sony just kicked microsoft in the balls.
makes sense to me. it'll be interesting to watch where it goes.. a new service pack kills sony dvd drivers? I have no clue.
either way I'll get some laughs out of the two slugging it out.
every time I see a book that's supposed to make you think better, act smarter, etc- I wonder...
does the book really do that? it seems they always get positive reviews(wish I could think of other examples)... it sort of leads me to believe that this is sort of like the emperor's new clothing.... you have the choice of saying "this book didn't make me smarter/it didn't work because I'm too dumb" or "I am now enlightened. look how clever I am. if you can't understand this book, you must be too stupid to help."
Don't know how true that is with this reviewer, but I tend to take these things with a grain of salt. just a thought....
Will it support pci modems? no clue- I thought it did.
Will it support touchpads on laptops? every laptop I've seen with a touch pad worked fine...
Will the frame buffer work properly on 3dfx cards I was under the impression it did- unless I misunderstand what you're talking about. the last voodoo card I had ran linux just fine.
Will it get rid of the fucking cli for good and boot DIRECTLY in to X? um.... why? you can set it to jump right into runlevel 5 or 6 or whatever xwindows is. That's not the job of the kernel I don't think- that would fall under init or something...
Will it tell Stallman to fuck off for trying to put gnu/ on it. He'll stop with the GNU when the trolls stop coming to slashdot and acting like jackasses.
actually my comment was in response to the over-simplification in the grandparent comment-
it IS possible to get work done in linux. as for tinkering, when I set up my computer to dual boot debian and win2k, it took me 2 hours to get EVERYTHING in debian up and running, recompile a new kernel, and upgrade from stable to sarge (and I'm an idiot). only 2 reboots.
with windows, it took me the rest of the day and the day after just to get the ethernet and geforce working. Over 23 reboots. Yes, I counted.
although thinking back, "tinkering with windows" is less like tinkering and more like "bashing with a mallet."
I never called it a toy os, I was just pointing out that that was the only use for me.
I get lots of code done on my linux box... perl/tk, my website, java, some C, etc... and on windows, I get just as much work done.... ut2003, battlefield 1942, neverwinter nights....hey wait a minute.... just a an fyi, not a troll.
my point is, for me, linux is both a tinkering system and a WORKstation... the windows partition is strictly for goofing off:)
I posted anonymous to save moderators from wasting points on something so trivial, but if you insist.... ok, non-anonymous, with karma bonus. here's a study here's another one just to make sure.
at least debian is easy to figure out how to pronounce:)
before you call me stupid, read this to quote: "...as Purdue undergraduate Ian Murdock flipped through a Unix magazine...[stuff]...fusing his first name with that of his girlfriend Debra, Murdock founded what would become Linux's most popular non-commercial distribution -- Debian GNU/Linux."
so that's deb[ra]Ian... not Deebian..
(and for the record, I do use debian as a desktop os for my desktop, my laptop, and my girlfriend's desktop)
I'm sick of seeing all these college kids/soccer moms/etc complaining how they need their cell phones...
YOU DON'T NEED IT! you didn't need it 5 years ago, you don't need it now. I've only met a handful of people who would "qualify" as needing it. one runs his own business, the other only has that phone, and no land line.
china, japan peru, germany, france, etc... I'd like to see someone actually build a world map with all the opensource-leaning countries marked. that way we can see where it's growing... This talks about some of the countries switching.... I don't know, I guess it would just be nice to have a master list... maybe the EFF could do this?
best advice: Dual boot, make everyone an account. show them how to log in. do the whole "this is for work" line. show your son the 70+ gamesthough not top of the line, they're still fun. the novelty of it will get him.show the gf mozilla and openoffice. tell them they can always boot back into the other mode if they need to, but just try it. every time the computer is free, boot it back to linux and see if they toy with it before rebooting.
While I use linux for just about everything, neverwinter nights and now battlefield 1942 are keeping me on windows. for my girlfriend, her hp printer/fax/all-in-one is a bitch to set up, and I just don't have the time/expertise to fiddle with it.
oh, and usb support for her palm pilot. I talked to the author of palm link, and he wanted me to upgrade to an unstable kernel if I wanted any chance of it even coming close.
I decided it wasn't worth it. For now, she uses linux, but reboots every week or so to backup her palm pilot.

I've grown up to be a responsible, sane adult who isn't mind-controled by the media.
welcome to the club- now there's 5 of us.
I'd recommend giving them a copy of knoppix.

microsoft themselves have proven you don't have to have the best product, just the prettiest wrapping.
nonono, that wouldn't work... you'd get your keyboard all sticky.
</nerd>
<geek> like that would change anything?</geek>

or failing hard drives?
efficient by time-
10 minutes with AMD as opposed to hours with Intel.

/me imagines a pack of wild yorkshire terriers attacking a gian hyena....
hehehe.
wonder if microsoft will mention this to the japanese when they're evaluating OSS? :)
geeks like fall into two categories-
startrek fans or starwars fans.
a movie from either is considered a message from heaven/satan, depending on your point of view.
this is important because now the 50% that are startrek fans are preparing to travel to their mecca(movie theatre) and await a sign.
it's completely a religious thing at this point:)

here's a study
here's another one just to make sure.
both are google caches of the pdf's (1,2)
the bit about the windows admins is my own 2 cents- that's completely based on my biased opinion.
at least debian is easy to figure out how to pronounce:)

actually, it is my form of income; I make my living off of it.
I think you missed the point.
read the other responses to my comment if you still don't understand.
if you don't need it, cancel your service.

perhaps that's why they're declaring broke-ness.
