Am I the only person on this site that wants to see a movie when it comes out?!? There's so much drama about a preview of Towers or whenever there's a trailer for Clone Wars. Why do you want to see the best scenes in a movie 6 months before you'll get to see the rest?!

  3. Re:paper office? on The Myth of the Paperless Office · · Score: 4, Informative

According to a FAQ at http://www.paper.upm-kymmene.com, "4) How much energy is needed in the paper production? Depending on the grade 2-4 MWh of heat and power is needed to produce one tonne of paper. The power use of an one hour home-PC session is roughly the same as the power used for a copy of a Donald Duck cartoon magazine. 5) How much water is needed in paper production? The fresh water use of a paper mill is about 10-15 cubic meters per tonne of paper depending on the grade and the mill."

The paperless office can't apply to some business models, sure.. but programming teams, tech support personnel, secretarial pools, etc can all easily stop killing off the rain forests with a little common sense. I couldn't believe how much paper we wasted on memos at my last "office" job, a dozen sheets a day with memos that just went to the garbage just as quickly as I could have hit the "delete" button in our e-mail client. "Did ya check out the memo on the DPS reports, Peter"?

  15. As for me.. on Apple Wants Your Input · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm currently jumping the MS bandwagon myself. Why? Reliability. I am sick of reinstalling my damn operating system (and programs) every few months. I am sick of crashes when doing very little. I am sick of WinNT having memory problems when I have a gig of PC133 memory. On some of the servers I've worked on, it's reasonable. I've seen WinNT servers up for almost a year with no downtime. But servers don't load / unload programs repeatedly. Real users do. Yes, I know.. If this even gets modded to a point where people see it I'll have 30,000 "linux rulz!!" comments. And do you know why MS-haters don't go to Linux for thier desktop? Support! I don't want GIMP, I want a real graphics program (or video editing program, etc). I don't want FreeCiv, I want CivIII! The "free software" community is doomed on the desktop because Linux users don't pay for software. Money pays for developers. Money makes games and real programs happen. If I were to co-loc a box for server purposes, redhat would be on there in a flash - but not at my desk. If I have to pay an additional $500 for a laptop that won't crash and has support staff who know phrases other than "RTFM!" I'll do it.

  17. great, but.. on Platform Independent Gaming? · · Score: 1

As an Apple fan I of course applaud this, as the reason why I also own an AMD/Nvidia beast is purely due to our lousy game selection. The downside? Well, there is one and it's a killer. What's going to happen to video games if they're developed for all platforms at once? The biggest market for games is obviously console buyers. PC enthusiasts are less in number from the headcounts I've seen and PC game piracy is beyond rampant. If all video games are developed with console players more in mind than PCs we may lose our PC Baldur's Gates and wind up with Console Baldur's Gates.. Dramatic example, maybe, but it's worth considering.
