My company has offices in San Jose and Shanghai. Since our employees in China have difficulty getting visas to come to America for meetings and conferences, the Americans go to Shanghai instead
You do realize that setting up a video conference would greatly reduce your travel costs and still allow you to meet with you counterparts in China?
Glen Larson wrote a book back in the late 1970's: http://www.goodreads.com/book/...
In this book, the Cylons were not machines but a living race. Elite or upper echelon Cylons underwent operations to get additional brains added to them (or something along those lines). And Baltar dies. (Thank the Gods, and I never really liked him in either series). Read the reviews from the link above. Well worth the read if you can get your hands on a copy.
If the series is rebooted again, I would prefer that they model it off this book. I have a feeling that you, too, would like this one as well.
soon after saying "just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu," Linus also said "and 640K ought to be enough for this new OS"..
or something like that.
We are on the opposite ends of the ideological rainbow (no pun intended), but I agree with part of what he is doing. The USA has plenty of high tech workers to fill any voids in the IT world here in the USA. If the number of H-1B visas should change, it would be to lower it, in my opinion. Definitely, do not increase this number.
Yes, i do. use homeopathic remedies for prevention. I got the flu once in the past 10 years while using homeopathic remedies. This years harsh strain of the flu did in my whole family. We passed it around between each other for about 10-12 days.
And I did get a flu shot once. Once! Within five months of getting a flu shot, I got the flu.
When I went to the doctor (who diagnosed me with the flu), he asked me if I got a flu shot within the past 5 months. Then I told him I did, he replied that what usually happens when the flu shot wear off is that the patient gets the flu. Both my wife and I have run into other doctors (family practice doctors) who refuse to get a flu shot because of that reason.
The study that i want to see is a comparison of those who get a flu shot and and still get the flu to those who got the shot and did not get the flu.
So let me get this straight... you don't have time to read through 200+ resumes for each of the 5 open positions that you have, but you have time to read and post comments on slash dot?
...At a high level, though, judges get to change laws...
NO!!! Judges DO NOT CHANGE LAWS. That is the job of congress. At best Judges, in theory, can only rule that a law is constitutional or not, but only if the law, itself, is challenged. Even if a Judge were to rule a law unconstitutional, that is not changing the law. It is striking down the law.
They also preside over a court of law and insure that the legal rights of all involved are legal and fair. If anything, judges are to make their rulings (in a none jury trial) based off existing law.
Back in the day I came into possession of an ID that vaguely resembled me.
I had one of those ID's also. It was my older brother. I never had a problem. I would swipe his ID, go grab some beer at the local "kwiki mart" and return his id. I became such a regular at the kwiki mart that they stopped carding me. If a newbie was working the cash register and she asked me for my ID, I would just flag down a regular cashier who would then vouch for me.
Wait a minute... I did have one problem. I went to a different kwiki mart and was denied beer because the guy knew my brother. He gave me the ID back, though. So I went someplace else and got the beer. ahhh, the life of a High School senior.
I had that discussion with one of my managers about people giving notice, and I asked him how much notice I would get from him if I were to be fired or laid off.
For security purposes, I understand why a company would not want to give you notice of a lay off and instead say thanks for your service. However, a reputable company would give you at least two weeks severance pay... which is kind of like a two weeks notice, but better: You don't have to work for the company, they are paying you not to work, and you have two weeks (or more) pay to hunt down a new job.
Though the article is interesting and enlightening, I could not help but notice that Firefox (1.5.0.7) did not render the page well. Some of the text from the article was underneath other text. It made the reading real annoying. On the other hand, the web page rendered well with IE.
It's like Bizarro world... A great article exposing Microsoft limitations and/or weaknesses, but it will not render well in Firefox. Because of that, I have to rate the article a 6.5 to 7 (on a scale of one to ten). Fix the rendering so that Firefox renders the text well and then it would probably rate as a 8.5 to 9.
...illegally keeping people in the armed forces past their retirement date..
This is not "illegal." Keeping people past their retirement date has been done in the past by former presidents. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it illegal. However, it can be changed. It just takes congress to pass a new law. Talk to your senators and/or congressman.
...stepping up attempts to recruit minorities only because they've run out of white people dumb enough to sign up...
So what are you saying?... that minorities are dumb? or just that minorities are dumber than white people? You are treading dangerous waters here. If Jessie Jackson reads your post, you could be in a lot of hot water.
Hate Bush if you must. A lot of people do. A lot of people hate Bush so much that they loose sight of reality and blame Bush for everything. Some of it warrented and some of it not.
Oh, and as far as something good they are doing, how about the tax cuts? Seems that the economy is "officially" doing better now than the same time last year.
Aye, just like the 5000+ member Christian church up the street from me that says gays should be executed and all other religions are Satan's tools to mislead people from the One True Faith. Except Jews, they are all just going to hell for killing Jesus.
The above just proves that any form of extremism (whether islamic, christain or otherwise) is just a cancer to any society. The real problem is that people, in general, fear that which they do not understand. If religions would actively try to understand other religions (and understanding does not mean converting), then society would be a better place.
Are you a Frat boy? Let me guess... the first thing you do in the morning is walk home? No no, wait, wait! The first thing you do is introduce yourself... theeeeen you walk home.
Props to a state that's been thumbing its nose at tyrrany since Sam Adams
I think I need to visit a bar. When I read the above sentence of the parent post, I thought of beer before I thought of some guy from 200+ years ago. I had to check the link to confirm that he was referring to the guy.
What is the best way for new IS managers to convince their superiors of the need for widespread change?
People, in general, in the business world fear change. What you are proposing is a big change. You can't change a thing until management is ready for it. However, you can plant seeds. For example, you can mention how great an easy it would be to have a network to easily and securely share data (assuming that you don't have a network). Mentioning licensing and how much money the company could lose if employees are using software for which the company did not purchase or does not have enough licenses.
when they are ready, they will be more receptive to your ideas. But until then, you might as well talk to a wall.

Microsoft banks on making money off of idiots.
Interesting... I thought this was the goal of all companies.
That's what freedom's about: not having to care about offending people just because they did something important.
You're not in politics, are you?

I strongly disagree with Mr. Gates. I would gladly replace all of 22 PCs in my kitchen for a mainframe.
The most obvious question from the above comment is:
Would your heating costs go up or down when the 22 PCs are replaced?
Oh, and another: Would you even need a furnace at this point?
Face facts folks, Linux still isn't ready for the desktop, and Novell, despite their loads of marketing, knows it.
Either this guy is a troll or doesn't know Novell at all. Since when has Novell been know to do a lot a marketing? Or even a little for that matter?

Hmm. I remember upgrading from Win 98 to Win 2000, and I don't recall a 2039% improvement. Maybe I got a dodgy copy.
yea. and the 0.15% upgrade from 2000 to 2003 sounds a little suspect also.
Why is it that someone who makes a drunken santa gets on the Slashdot front page, but this does not:
