Hmmm let see, last time I rebooted my PC was....Oct. 28th 2002, because I had to take it to a LAN party. Before that it had been up a month before I upgraded the video drivers. Funny bit about the mention of being able to monitor things coming from WITHIN the clients network. You would think anyone intelligent/willing to commint electronic espionage would at least be smart enough to burn the data to a pocket CD-R and take it home and transferr it from there. And if the workstation isn't equipped with a CD-RW drive, they make some dang small portable drives (Plextor makes one the size of a discman that even comes in a very cd-player like case, wouldn't think that would be hard to sneak in), or click drives, or maybe even a floppy if your transferring something small enough (spanned over multiple disks even?).

The point is, anyone stupid enough to transmit company data from WITHIN the company's network deserves whatever they get.

Also saying Linnux is free implies there is no cost, saying the source if free, or open or whatever, implies that, even if there is cost, the source can be looked at without an NDA. Which is one of my pet peeves about this community, free doesn't mean 50 different things, say it right, and be clear, free can mean the source is "free" but thats kind of intentionally confusing people isnt it? Oh no, I understand the ARTICLE just fine. All too well as a matter of fact, just the other day I spent the better part of the weekend finishing our XP rollout, to the shipping system and the accounting system, how fun was that? Both of them using pretty old software with poor installation methods in a goofball setup. Then I got to revamp the entire inventory program (basicly re-wrote it from scratch) so I know the feeling. My point, which is flambait if the losers want to call it that, was that "Life in the trenches: A sysadmin speaks" is more than just a little overdramatized. Is our job complicaed? Yeah, is it sometimes very thankless? Yeah. Is it THAT bad....hell no....you want life in the trenches go become a cop, or a fireman, for example. Talk about hard, frustrating (no matter hwo hard you work there will always be crime) and thankless, and usually pays worse too.

I think you are missing the point. The benefit of having interfaces that mimic XP is that, if you want people to move over, give them a path with less resistance. This is SO true in business as well. If a Linux rollout means re-training already less than adept users in a new environment, then wether or not that interface is "better" or not is moot because these users are used to a different interface, right or wrong, for better or for worse, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.
