not deliberately sexist perhaps, but more likely designed by single men, for single men and with a "you have to change your life, because we're not changing our conditions" attitude

The system that was designed for single men, by single men has worked very well thus far. It has caused the industry to advance with a unprecedented velocity because of its culture of obsession, and isolation (which are two things that most but not all women I know generally find hard to deal with). It seems to me that the most productive and innovative companies are the ones that embody this culture the most, such as EA which although is a horrific workplace, manages to produce inordinate amounts of software. Open source which is done primarily by the most hardcore of nerds in an environment with typically no human contact, and at late hours because of sheer obsession has created some terrific software and innovation.

Beleive it or not, but I actually really like women, and I'd love to be in the company of many many women while working, especially if they are women who like and are good at computing and this is not simply because of sexual attraction, I actually like them for many reasons. So I most cordially welcome anyone to join this system as an equal, regardless of sex and also for that matter race, colour or creed. For it is true, computing does lack gender diversity. But simply put, if someone is wanting to be useful, they MUST adapt to the only system that has proved itself to work. If computing is to remain the 21st century's most cutting edge industry it must keep itself geared towards production over inclusiveness and comfort. As for losing people, if they are not willing to give themselves to the pursuit of excelence as the great minds of computing have done before them, they are simply not worth persuing because their potential, no matter how high, will not be exploited as well as the moderate potential of someone who is committed in mind, body and spirit to the tasks of this feild.

If women are kept out of the system because of active sexism, that is wrong and it needs to change. If women are kept out of the system because they don't fit into the system, they need to try to fit in. After all, there are plenty of systems relating to jobs that a geek would need to change their life to be a part of.

  8. Re:Stolen? on CherryOS Mac Emulator Resurfaces · · Score: 3, Insightful
Stealing is about wrongful changing of ownership. When one steals a toaster from a department store, that toaster in effect ceases to be the property of the store and wrongfully becomes property of the theif, and there are laws to return ownership back to the rightful party.

When someone has intelectual property, they own the rights to it, they get the soul ability to control distribution, claim authorship and other rights.

If someone makes a copy of it, they breech the distribution rights of the original author, however they do not take any of of those parts of the intelectual property. The property is the rights over the data, not the data itself. Only the data is copied, the rights stay where they are and no rights are falsely claimed by the person who copied it.

However when they modify it, rebrand it and repackage it they are claiming those rights that are in effect the intelectual property. They are claiming distribution rights and claiming authorship.

What would be equivilant is taking a good, but little known song, then putting it onto a CD and claiming that it is mine. That way the author gets neither the credit for the song, nor the control over how the song is distributed. It doesn't allow the songwriter to disallow the song from being used in ways that they would find offensive to their work, (such as in an album with Achy Breaky Heart and the McCartney/Wonder rendition of Ebony and Ivory) or contrary to their morals (such as in a hardcore fetish porn film).

I don't pretend to advocate piracy. Control of distribution (such as through the GPL or other agreements) is part of the core of interlectual property rights. But it is a FAR cry from doing what these people did with someone elses software.

I have heard many people responding the same way to the same claim that women may in fact be on average less suited for particular tasks. To tell you the truth, most of them give a lot more explanation than this post. However I think many people make such rebuffs upon misunderstanding both the meanings and the motivations of what the grandparent said.

The meaning is misinterpreted as saying that all woman cannot do such things, no woman knows math, no woman understands science, no woman can employ linear reasoning in a manner that produces good results in a field such as engineering. This is clearly not the case, there are many women who are good at such things, I have an aunt that is an exceptional doctor for example. In fact I have been treated by many excellent physicians and surgeons that have been women. I was beaten in math by a female student in my final year in high school and I was actually taught math by a female teacher. What it means is there are simply more males who are good at such things, more males that think the right way, more males that are willing to have the single minded obsessive focus on particular problems that I myself have observed in females less commonly, in both fields that are "socially acceptable" for females and those that are not. There are very few women in this world that are willing to discuss many fields, particularly those related to technology, even when surrounded by people who's respect would actually be gained by participation. There of cause women who will heartily enjoy discuss such subjects and they are known amongst some male circles as "totally super awesome". Of cause it doesn't mean that all males are good at it either, or even that most males are good at such things, or even that many more males are suited to the task than females.

Secondly the motivations are misinterpreted as being either chauvinistic or misogynistic, as a way to prove male superiority and keep woman out of their domain. This is totally not the case. Claiming that most women are not as naturally talented at particular fields because of their physiology is not asserting they are inferior, it is simply making a generalisation on a very narrow part of a woman's skillset. It isn't meant to discuss worth, merely compatibility with a particular endeavour.

And to conclude. If anyone, regardless of sex, race, colour or creed really cares about "societal and social reasons" enough to keep them away from doing what they really want to do, then frankly, I think they would make atrocious computer nerd and I want them the hell away from the industry. I havn't been part of society or in any way social since I started programming. I know both males and females who are real computer geeks and they have both turned their backs on society to the same amount, they had to at least somewhat otherwise they wouldn't be good at what they do. I think society is probably the flimsiest explanation for something caused by physiology that I have ever heard, especially when it is related to computers.

Nice troll. This is utter garbage of cause, but it is common misconception so I'll rebut it. Just because something uses a tool doesn't mean it is subject to the same licence as the tool. Firstly, if this were the case, then any document created in an open source word processor or text editor would need to be GPLed which is clearly not the case (and would be dangerous for writing confidential documents). Even if compiling something with gcc made it a dirivitive work (which it doesn't), only the binary would be a dirivitive of gcc, and the source code would be completely unneffected since it is not modified by gcc. BeOS was compiled by gcc for the x86 platform and it remained closed source and propritary with no legal challenges.

One only has to release the source code under the GPL to the people you distributed the binary to.If you keep it wholly in house you only need to give the source code to anyone. If you make it for a single client you only need to give the source code to that single client. Of cause anyone who you give the source to is allowed to pass it on, but it isn't like you have to just broadcast it to the world just because you changed it.

If you are not trolling and have read what I have just said and still don't think its fair, think about this: the program you are modifing was written by thousands of other people, many of them with commercial tasks just like you, and they have let you use their code. If you want to distribute the hacked kernel without sharing your code, how is it fair for the people who have contributed beforehand?
