    I think it's the sort of thing that could really bring humanity together and encourage us to look past our differences and work together towards a common goal - but then I also think that we couldn't achieve a united deep space exploration programme until humanity learned to work together ans set aside our petty squabbles.
    Probably about 99% of the world's population agrees with you. Unfortunately, billions of them are controlled by genocidal dictators.

    And why not launch a couple a week? Burt Rutan goes on to point out that after each new space vehicle is created the old designs are never used again.

    It's because the engineers all watch the TV shows where the supervillain makes a superweapon that the hero is barely able to stop and only because of dumb luck, but never attempts to make the same weapon again.

    OpenDocument is a standard format for documents that anyone can use. It doesn't have anything to do with voice synthesizing or special screen readers. That's the editor/viewing application's responsibility or capability.

    As for being a sex offender, well, that's really totally irrelevant, but I'm waiting for some lawmaker to decide that we need legislation prohibiting the use of open wireless APs by sex offenders, for the children.

    One might speculate that he was using the connection to troll for Internet kiddie porn, thinking that they'd never be able to trace it to him. Perhaps they'll find evidence of this. (Of course, it's not clear exactly what "registered sex offender" means; maybe he's not into kids at all.)

    That's advertising. It's the same principle as drug dealers on the corner of the street offering free shots. Once the kids are hooked, they have nowhere else to go.

    This analogy reflects unduly harshly on the drug trade because once kids are addicted, they can go to *ANY* drug dealer and score a hit. Microsoft's game is much more insidious, because you can only score your next hit from them. Drug dealers sell a commodity item in an open and free market. Please consider this before insulting them by comparing their business practices to Microsoft's again!

    They've licensed the technology from CSI. You even get a voice recognition feature that lets you say "zoom... enhance... enhance"

    The CSI guys do a lot more work than they need to. When they get a blurry photo of the killer, they just need to zoom in on a skin cell to the point that they can see the nucleotides of the perp's DNA.

    Yes, that's right folks, the US spends half of all the money spent on defense.

    China spends *A LOT* more on its military than it discloses. For one thing, it costs a lot of money to make hundreds of nukes. I'm sure its accounting would make the UN look honest.

    The UN is a multi-billion-dollar meeting room. As for being the World Police, the UN is as toothless as it is gutless. When's the last time it did anything more about a genocide than write a letter saying "Gosh, it sure would be great if you guys would cut that out."

    Effectively, the UN is the body that keeps these regimes in power.

    That's just not realistic. Western consumers just aren't willing to pay more, especially if company B from country C is willing to exploit third-world labour and sell in country A for less than companies from country A. You should hang out at the entrance of your local Wal*Mart and tell everyone coming in how much their consumer practices make third-world workers suffer. Keep a list of the number of different ways in which they tell you to go fuck yourself.

    It's liberal-minded socialists who murder the most third-world citizens in the end. It's captialists who want to develop their countries and have the only credible means to do so.
