Because perhaps the primary purpose of our federal "law enforcement" agencies isn't protection of the civilians, but protection of the leaders and political structure?

I don't mean to make 911 seem insignificant here by any means, but think about this: The thousands that died in the attacks were only a tiny percentage of the US population, but the threat to our leaders stability was enormous.

So no, the FBI could care less about your money that was stolen (Even though you could be quite impoverished and needed that money to eat that week), but threaten their system, and they bring out the big guns.

Just giving some food for thought.

I love ID as a company, but I don't think the new Doom deserves all the empty hype and massive system upgrades.

Besides, what made ID, Doom and Quake popular in the first place was mindless, bloody, fast paced carnage. That's what ID needs to focus on, IMHO.

    8. Okay, I'll admit, there are a lot of horrible drugs out there (I've never known anyone that could try cocaine without developing some kind of problem from it.) But heaven forbid we allow children to see a life-giving breast. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: America loves violence and death, and hates anything to do with life.

    17. Rock and Roll
    18. Effectively dead. Everything I hear anymore is either country or rap. Thanks RIAA!

So what's the point of my flamebait infested post? The fact is that we have it a little too easy in the Western world. We live longer than we ever have, we're healthier, we're richer, and what do we do? We get bored. We start nitpicking the small stuff. We whine and bitch about the most inane things. It's time to appreciate what we have, stop bitching and be more tolerant of one another. We all sin, we all have some kind of disgusting habit. We must accept this.

We must also accept that no one lives forever and that no one knows what's on the other side of the darkness. We need to live and enjoy our lives. I'm not saying we should be completely irresponsible, but it's time for us to pull the politically-correct butt-plug from our collective asses.

Besides, what's the point of living if we can't enjoy our lives? If the whiners had their way, the only thing we could legally do is sit in a small white room, perfectly quiet and still. Every day we would eat nothing but a single stick of celery and drink a cup of purified water. Think I'm being ridiculous? That's where our spoiled asses are headed. But of course Western civilization will collapse before that happens.

And please note that I am completely non-partisan. I condemn both the left and right in this post.

I think one of the problems with the current Linux desktop is that they try too hard to copy Windows. First, it makes Linux appear as a cheap Windows knock-off. Second, all the annoyances of the Windows interface are there and then some.

Desktop Linux desperately needs some creative interface people who can concoct a fairly original, simple, streamlined, attractive, and usable GUI. Look at Mac OS X for instance. Many geeks are migrating away from Windows and Linux in favor of Apple's new OS due to the power, simplicity, and beauty of Mac OS X.

I believe desktop Linux would make more progress if it say Mac OS X as its main competition and not Windows. If Linux could be developed into an OS X alternative for x86, it could gain ground fast. Next, campaign HARD for games support and we could have a serious Windows-killer on our hands.

I've found a pretty good solution for playing those games on a console.

    You'll need:

    1. USB Keyboard
    2. USB Trackball
    3. A board of some sort big enough for 1 and 2. (Portable desks, marketed at laptop owners usually work for this, and they have nice padding on the bottom!)
    4. Velcro
    5. A PS2 and/or X-Box. (Duh.)

Stick the softer velcro on top of the board. Stick the hard half of the velcro on the bottom of your keyboard and trackball. Now, you can rest the keyboard and trackball on your lap easily. Works for regular mice too, but you need a big enough surface to move it around.

This may be old hat, but I've never heard of anyone else doing it.

Oh, and as far as looking "out of place," I don't see how a keyboard and mouse look any more out of place than regular controllers.

I highly recommend it to any horror fans out there. I equally recommend "Bad Taste," which is every bit as disgusting (Peter Jackson's head is split open for half the movie, characters drinking vomit, etc.) IIRC, this is Jackson's first film.

I was so pleased with the results, I have left it that way, just using ctrl-left click for right clicking. It provides the fastest window navigation of any window environment I have ever used. (Windows, Mac 9/X, various Linux environments)

Expose really makes me wonder how much longer Apple will stick with the one-button/no-button mouse. Sure, the idea of a buttonless mouse is neat, but having total window access at the touch of your fingers and scrolling capability greatly outweighs the novelty of a "simple" mouse.
