Actually, so does the guy who created the spreadsheet. The artist, track, and number of times on the list should all appear in separate columns to make sorting the data worthwhile.
.... and that's all it is - opinion. There is no guarantee of any educated knowledge behind the trading in the DARPA example. At least Wahlstreet was something everyone could associate with, because the all of the domestic investors could have a direct outcome on the process.

What's the point of the original poster? Do./ readers find Microsoft such a despicable entity that they need to post such articles to remind people that they also fail? May be it was meant as a joke, but still, very poor taste.
IMHO, I think the better question is why are they actually posted by the editors.
Permit me to answer my own question - they make people click on the story, which increases ad revenue. Simple as that.
I made a similar suggestion a while ago here on Slashdot in reference to a story where (iirc) Comcast was complaining about P2P users and the constant port querying they generate and bandwitdh they use. I only share the directory I download to, and clear it out immediately upon completing a file. For this, I was labeled a leech, someone who wasn't contributing to the community, a selfish prick, etc.....
Now that the RIAA is handing out lawsuits to the little guy, this seems to be acceptable behavior. Funny how things change in just a few short months.
One catch - the plan suggests involvement in one or two sports in addition to 5BX. Can't speak for the rest of slashdotters, but sports definitely aren't my thing.
It's already been noted that the data is merely for the parent site, and not for clients. I think a "bang for the buck" factor of cost vs. uptime, or something similar would be more useful. NYI has the top spot... But what if CW or Yahoo (for example) give you the same features for half of the price? That would move them to the top spot in my book.
Funny... A while ago, I got flamed for saying I only share by new/recent download directory, simply to save on upload bandwidth. People said it wasn't fair to DL from others, yet not provide my own files in return. I would think that this "selfish" method would become a more standard practice now, simply in the interest of self-preservation.
But on the other hand, every hardware manufacturer doesn't get lead stories on Slashdot AND CNN (it's still on the front page as I post this, but yesterday it was one of the lead stories too) about how they've introduced the world's fastest personal computer.
Methinks you overrate Slashdot. They don't really have stories of their own, except for the Ask Slashdot articles. The stories that get top billing here can be quite subjective also, just like mainstream media. Remember all the excitement about sharks to summers ago, and all of the excitement last year about child kidnappings? Shark attack numbers were at or below the average. I'd also bet that if you checked kidnapping stats, it wouldn't be an unusual year, either. Bending benchmark results is a hot topic, so it'll appear in stories everywhere more often in the coming weeks, whether or not the instances of fudged results have increased or not.
On page four of the article, the author lists that he used the system for typical office applications like email, word processing, and digital imaging. I'd have to wonder what the temps would be like if he torture tested it instead.

The bird issue is a standard one brought up by anti-wind people. In at least one instance, a study proved that the turbines did not contribute to bird deaths. In the report linked, decoys were used in an attempt to draw eiders in close to the turbines, but the ducks overcame their normal social nature, and stayed at least 100m away from the turbines.

Since you're branching out beyond a group of people you're comfortable with, make an effort to ensure your attendants are clean. Klez, Fizzer, Bugbear... etc. could take a giant shit on you otherwise. All you need is one kid that has parents with a fat wallet to get his system wiped, and you'll have 20/20 hindsight in no time.
Wish I had some mod points for you - you've hit the nail on the head. Everyone thinks they're an exception to the rule, or some kind of special case. By making the rule flat-out across the board, there don't need to be any exceptions.
.... get back in traffic, and arrive at the store right when they close before a holiday....
And even then, you're still fuct, since retailers are worried about ppl buying games to copy them, and then return, so all you can get is an even exchange for the same damned title, or store credit.
