IMHO, I think the better question is why are they actually posted by the editors.

Permit me to answer my own question - they make people click on the story, which increases ad revenue. Simple as that.

I made a similar suggestion a while ago here on Slashdot in reference to a story where (iirc) Comcast was complaining about P2P users and the constant port querying they generate and bandwitdh they use. I only share the directory I download to, and clear it out immediately upon completing a file. For this, I was labeled a leech, someone who wasn't contributing to the community, a selfish prick, etc.....

Now that the RIAA is handing out lawsuits to the little guy, this seems to be acceptable behavior. Funny how things change in just a few short months.

Funny... A while ago, I got flamed for saying I only share by new/recent download directory, simply to save on upload bandwidth. People said it wasn't fair to DL from others, yet not provide my own files in return. I would think that this "selfish" method would become a more standard practice now, simply in the interest of self-preservation.

But on the other hand, every hardware manufacturer doesn't get lead stories on Slashdot AND CNN (it's still on the front page as I post this, but yesterday it was one of the lead stories too) about how they've introduced the world's fastest personal computer.

Methinks you overrate Slashdot. They don't really have stories of their own, except for the Ask Slashdot articles. The stories that get top billing here can be quite subjective also, just like mainstream media. Remember all the excitement about sharks to summers ago, and all of the excitement last year about child kidnappings? Shark attack numbers were at or below the average. I'd also bet that if you checked kidnapping stats, it wouldn't be an unusual year, either. Bending benchmark results is a hot topic, so it'll appear in stories everywhere more often in the coming weeks, whether or not the instances of fudged results have increased or not.
