For a major manufacturer to sell a laptop without the MS tax. I want a linux laptop, but refuse to pay a premium for it at a smaller manufacturer(I can't afford the premium) , especially since I should be saving money by not paying for windows. I also want fully compatable hardware in my laptop, no windows only wireless, no non-standard power features(or at least release the specs so linux drivers can be made), and a video chipset/card that has quality linux drivers(like nvidia). Whats so hard about not forcing me to buy certain software with my hardware? I can already find laptops with nvidia GFX and other linux compatible parts, but they always require the MS tax, and I can find laptops without the MS tax, but not with linux compatible parts, or you have to pay extra, it's a clearly abusive monopoly in the laptop market today.
Until then I think my money will go towards a zaurus and desktop PC components.
Back when I started out with linux(less than 5 years ago!) there wasn't any considerable anomosity between linux/bsd. The only change that might have caused this is that linux has become simpler and more graphical in nature, and has increased in popularity. So is it that BSD users are jealous, or is it that more idiots can now work linux? Probably a combination of both judging by the mud being slung by both sides. Maybe the bsd based OSX release has created some tensions for both sides too.
It is sad though that you have to suffer any discrimination for using the GPL. McBride and Microsoft (the 2 main anti-gpl propagandists) should be strung up for this.
I'm guessing they already have a plan to remove the dust, and just aren't talking so that they seem like geniuses and heroes when they get the rover to last longer than expected. Or maybe the plan isn't gaurenteed so they want to prevent expectations in the chance that it fails. But trust me, they already have a plan, and it will be tried, it just may not work.
That this doesn't become a new mantra amoung PHB's, "No Re-writes!" . Imagine how frustrating that would be, especially when a re-write is absolutely nescesary.
Funny, I just got an xbox at christmas, and it just crashed for the first time today. Still better than desktop XP, but I hope this is a rare occurance. Just because it's standardised hardware, doesn't make it crash proof.
(game was espn hockey 2k4, and it was caused by near as I can tell, excessive input from 2 controllers while loading a faceoff, but it could have been just random)

I just realized something. If people outside of america wish to at all influence the political choices of people inside america, then all they have to do is endorse the opposite person to whom they prefer. The americans would assume that because foreigners are endorsing that person, then that person/party must not be looking out for the best interests of america. So all these socialist europeans should sing the praises of bush to undo him! But of course as proof that europeans regardless of belief aren't the vast intellectual superiors to ameircans, they won't realize this idea en mass.
There, I've made my controversial post for this topic!

Windows 98 Phased Out

What happens when they have to re-install? The default install of win98 is alot buggier, and is missing several features of a fully updated version.
I just installed kde3.2 cvs, and the new FSViewPart view mode certainly is innovative. It takes a bit to generate on my measly 450mhz, but its pretty neat.
Kinda like taking over puerto rico in the spanish/american war ages ago, and still refusing to make them citizens or give them idependance decades after the fact. The only reason I can think to deny them citizenship(they have no voting rights or anything) is racism of thier 'mixed' ethnicity. Most aren't even aware of this sadly.
Or just the web browser. Konq is an excellent file manager, and would be a great benefit for when you need to do alot of file management on OSX. Finder imho isn't quite as intuitive or quick to work with.
My geforce2mx actaully came overclocked from the factory. and is faster than average. only problem is they used a shitty heatsink and I had to do some crazy cooling improvizations for it to run stable. And since it's only worth peanuts now, it's not worth it to buy a fancy new heatsink. This is a pci version too.
http://gutenpalm.sourceforge.net/ + zTXT coverter + Project Gutenburg + Old palm pilot = perfect ebook reading. I've read dozens of books on this thing, and when I'm bored I can fire up any number of distracting little games. I use a m125 and my batteries(NiMH) need charging after about 4-5 days of use with the backlight going often.
That may be so, but it is still no excuse to force a new country to use MS, when they can get it done for free with OSS. A waste of American tax payer money, with the only "benefits" being that MS gets some big upfront cash, and it locks Iraq into an expensive and proprietary solution once(if?) they are fully independant. If you like punishing France, go ahead, but giving MS a handout has nothing to do with punishing France.
Since copyright is about protecting money, then how about making it only apply to those who are making money off of copyright breach. It's alot more enforceable against only business then it is against all of humanity, and alot more fair as well.
Ex: 1. Joe copy's a song, == legal. 2. Joe copy's a song and sells it, == illegal. 3. J-corp copy's a CD and sells it to distributors, == even more illegal!
This of course applies to song/CD 's that they didn't create. And in my personal(and controversion I guess) opinion, it is up to the content pushers to get us to actually pay for thier stuff, whether through good(bonuses, artwork etc.) or bad(anti-copying technology.) .
And their justification is not to be mean. It's that he should have made plans to begin with. It's not their job to be someone's backup plan, as they themselves pointed out.
It's not a matter of backup plan at all. He had essentially a plane accident. There are many cases of military aircraft having to land, and being helped by thier hosts. It's not thier job, but it is common curtosy and human decency to help out. Would you prefer that from now on people will treat stranded military forces that wander into thier neighborhood like this?
I don't think it would be Microsoft. They have lots of money marching in the front door. Why would they need to sneak money in the back?
They could be trying to add legitimacy to investment in SCO, by using a seeming unbiased party. After all, if most of the recent investments in SCO all had a whiff of microcash, it wouldn't be the best for legitimacy.
I meant things like graphical install, and graphical administration apps.

Will IBM start selling notebooks without the microsoft tax too? And with fully linux compatible hardware?
Why not an address bar that you can type into for faster directory navigation? I think they should just steal the design of the kde file selector.

I think the "lofty valuation" of SCO should be evaluated first. RedHat is a VERY good value in comparison.

Did anyone else notice the storyline to mario bros can only be explained if the mushrooms mario keeps eating are "magic" ones?
It's in mid 2005 right now. And I set it to the correct time last week. Stupid taiwaneese motherboards.
