  1. I prefer 2 factor authentication to access my iPhone, something I have and something I know the keycode. Facial recognition adds something I have (my face) I would prefer to have both the key code and the facial recognition active. That way the only way to access the data on my phone is to have both my face and my pass code.

  2. Replacing 8" floppies would be hard, they probably have people scrounging in Garage sales looking for old computer parts and 8" floppies. These computers are so old that they are less sensitive to EMP, and are probably disconnected from the internet heck I doubt if they are even ethernet enabled. If they are they probably use Coax cables.

  3. I think it will take longer to pay off. This is adding in the cost and time delay of adding anti-terrorism measures into this transportation medium. You have to build in safeties for an internal explosion from the passenger compartment or cargo area. The same inspections may have to take place before passengers get on as in airports. What happens is someone tries to blow the tunnel from outside by dropping an improvised depth charge onto the tunnel?

If it is a privacy issue, why not have the video footage be stored is a separate memory card that can be flushed from the cockpit of the plane once it lands. Flushing would be locked out until the plane is stationary. The exit checklist for the pilot would include entering a code that would flush the video of the flight cockpit after landing. Let it be two codes, one that locks out the flushing ability, and another that flushes it. In the case of a hijacking he can enter the former and the response to the console would be identical in either case.

  17. Blades on Making Best Use of Data Center Space: Density Vs. Isolation · · Score: 1

You should have your VM images on some storage system like a NetApp, this lets you transfer the entire VM to another blade if one fails. So you have two blade racks both connected to the NetApp with software set up to fail over all the VM's from a failed blade to a blade on the second blade rack. You would probably run all the blades active on 1/2 load where on failure you transfer to the alternate blade on the 2nd rack and go to a full load on that blade. This protects you from a rack failure as well as an individual blade failure. The router/hub on a blade server is a single point of failure which is why you need 2 racks.

  18. Re:Ebola vs HIV on How Nigeria Stopped Ebola · · Score: 5, Insightful

The US health care system is a for profit medical system. This has resulted in a darwinian devolution of health care. The hospitals that care too much about treating patients and not their bottom line go out of business and fold. This leaves those that balance on the brink of bankruptcy and those who make a profit at the expense of patients who are uninsured or otherwise cannot pay for their medical services. Some keep their hospitals running by over billing those who are insured and those who can afford to pay, others do it by cutting back on training and equipment that is rarely used, like training for an infectious disease like Ebola or buying the equipment needed to prevent their own workers from being infected. The CDC sends out their protocols to all the hospitals, they cannot force the hospitals to buy the equipment, and train their staffs. Once the hospitals acknowledge they have received the protocols, not that they have implemented them, it seems the CDC marks them as being prepared for Ebola. Thus stands the current US preparedness for Ebola, a hodge podge of hospitals totally prepared and some totally without a clue, with protocols sitting in some filing cabinet somewhere.

SWA is negligent to their stockholders for not keeping up with the times. They should know all about twitter and the effects 1 annoyed passenger can have. It is a matter of training and putting procedures in place. The Gate attendant was in the right, and could have just made the point that she would be annoying the other priority passengers by giving him priority when he was not due it. SWA management completely mishandled it and blew it out of all proportion by stopping the flight and yanking the passengers thereby making a newsworthy story and giving themselves a very expensive case of bad publicity. It could have been handled by just a tweet explaining the policy and why putting him ahead of others would have been bad for other passengers. Then it would not have been a news story.
