Not that I've seen. Nor is there something for the Mac. Pity, as a more powerful mini would make a nice HTPC. If you aren't using the AVS forums for your info already, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f= 26/ has a forum dedicated to both Linux and Mac OS based HTPCs as well as a main forum for Windows based HTPCs.

As for ffdshow, I wholeheartedly agree on quality of the image it can produce on a powerful enough machine. For those that haven't seen ffdshow in use, http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=ffdshowdvd_1/ has a nice explanation on how to set it up including pics showing the expected results.

A long time ago I used to work for the company that made the software, so perhaps I'm biased. However, this offers the same functionality as Exchange/Notes and a whole lot more. Unified messaging is the heart of this product, but the featureset is staggering. Server support on Linux/Windows/OSX, client support for each, as well as web/phone/pda/etcetera.

I could go on and on about the features, but http://www.firstclass.com/AboutFC/ has a tonne of information to peruse and it will do a better job of informing you than I will.

Do yourself a favour and at least look at the features before settling on some other product that will offer either less functionality, or a much higher price point.

    Epic's Mark Rein On Playstation 3 E3 Footage 11:02 am - Andrew Burnes - Consoles: PS3 (5 comments)
Epic's Mark Rein dropped by our forums to clear up all the hoohah regarding the Playstation 3 footage from yesterday's unveiling:

In addition to the Sony demos being shown by Phil Harrison, the EPIC AND EA PRESENTATIONS WERE THE ONLY THIRD PARTY PORTIONS ACTUALLY RUNNING ON THE PS3 IN REAL-TIME. But most of those movies, which I probably watched 3 or 4 during rehearsals for the event, look very achievable and some were probably rendered on the actual box but in non-real-time. When a system is year away, heck even with a system is 6 months away, it is reasonable to expect the power of the dev kits would still only be a fraction of the power of the final system.

I know we'll certainly be able to achieve much more on the final box than we were able to show in our demo after working with the early dev kit for only ~2 months. As Tim mentioned our demo only really showed off the power of RSX and then still we're talk about an RSX that's nowhere near as fast as the final one will be. When we get home from E3 we'll also start diving seriously into the power of the cell processor. This is a very powerful system!

Sony's cell demos were extremely cool and inspiring but are totally achievable, and over time even surpassable, by third developers like us because, as Tim Sweeney said, the development environment is made up of parts we're already intimately familiar with: OpenGL, NVIDIA graphics, Linux, and PowerPC. Think about Epic's experience, for example. We rock on NVIDIA hardware. We have been doing OpenGL since Unreal1. We regularly ship our games on Linux and we've won several Macintosh Game of the Year awards including a special World-Wide Design Award directly from Apple for UT2004. We're going to be able to kick serious ass on PS3, and so are a lot of our licensees and other 3rd party developers, in a way that wasn't remotely possible on past consoles.

I should add that we're in a similar position for XBOX360. It's also made up of parts we're intimately familiar with.

My point is that developers are going to be able to get SO MUCH MORE power out of these consoles than they ever could in the past and so much closer to the raw power of the components.

The next generation is just going to be AMAZING!!! Next gen games will be a huge leap forward over current gen.

    Can you tell I'm excited?

Thanks a bunch for the comments Mark, always appreciated.

  10. Nothing (new) to see here on News Media Links Shooting To Games · · Score: 0

Just typical news coverage/finger pointing for an incident of this nature. It couldn't possibly have been the easy access to guns. Oh my no. It couldn't have been poor parenting either for that matter. It must therefore have been the video games. I guess this teen listened to Ozzy/Priest/Manson/etcetera too. I'll bet he was playing on his handheld gaming device, while listening to the above mentioned music at the time of the rampage as well.

Wake up you morons. I'm a video game junkie and have been since I was just a boy. I listen to a variety of music including the scapegoats named in previous incidents. I too have thought of inflicting well deserved violence on the bullies of my past/present. I get pretty wound up when some jackass cuts me off on my daily drive. I do NOT however, go out and act upon these thoughts/impulses.

Anybody who does something like this was/is unbalanced. It wasn't the video games people. It was the easy access to guns. It is people who kill people not guns true enough, but take away the guns, and I bet you a good deal of these school massacres would end with one killing before the assailant was tackled. Still not good, but a hell of a lot better than the current tally. It's a lot harder to wipe out a bunch of people with just a knife/whatever.

Just once, I'd like to see someone of power declare 'Well, after much analysis, it pretty much seems to be that the root problem was the easy access to a gun.' Not that I really hope for another killing spree, but perhaps if the next kid that flipped out was a classical music loving, non video game playing, non TV watching, well liked individual, people would have to start blaming the parenting/access to guns. Of course, things being what they are, I'm sure Mozart/Beethoven would be the culprits then.

Parents, call me crazy, but stop relying on the TV/Video games to raise your offspring. If you spent time with them and instilled a respect for their fellow man, most of these cases would never happen. However if you choose not to act as responsible parents, when things do go awry, realise that it was your fuckup, and not the video games that allowed this to happen. Stop playing the denial game. You own this. It is your problem/fault, not some geek that slaves away at his desk coding video games. Go and get rid of your guns or at least lock them up for pete's sake, grab your kids and spend some time with them.

Man, you'd think this was rocket science or something.

I really think this applies when you obtain a new job. For the most part, companies pay employees as little as they think they can get away with, and as long as you stay where you are, they are getting away with it.

Gone are the days of massive pay increases. To obtain a larger salary, you need to start somewhere else where your starting (read entry/lowest) salary was the highest salary you could obtain at your previous employers.

Fair or not, the onus is on you the employee to speak up for yourself when it comes to compensation. Dreaming that your company will give you a raise just because you deserve it (or at least feel like you do) is just that.
