If the Sophos group really wanted to make something useful, they could try actually writing it for the most problematic OS (Windows), and not just OS's that are mostly immune to viruses anyway.

So you would rather have this software running on the same machine the virus is running using the various back doors M$ has left in place therefore bypassing/de-activating any virus protection?. The parent has a machine which, as you state, is more immune from viruses which is the ideal place to have the virus protection. At least this way it can help to prevent any virus ever getting to the insecure OS part of your network.

    I agree totally..

I re-installed WinME on my pc the other day as well as Mandrake 8.2 on a seperate partition (new hard drive for those wondering why I was re-installing..) anyway for windows i had to do the following...
    1. Install ME (with numerous reboots...)
    2. Install VIA motherboard drivers
    3. Install SBlive drivers
    4. Install EPSON 740 drivers
    5. Install NVIDIA drivers
    6. Install Realtek 8139 drivers
    7. Install Office

with mandrake and using most of the default options I only had to do the following..
    1. Install Mandrake
    2. Install NVIDIA RPM's
everything else was installed for me (Printer drivers,Network modules, sound modules, openoffice)

can it be much easier than that? Even my girlfriend could install Mandrake!.

At the end of the day this is all about saving on software costs. Which ever way you go you still need to pay staff to maintain it!. By going the propriatary way you will end up spending huge amounts in licence fee's everytime M$ decides it needs more money and releases a new version of their OS/Office suite etc..

With budgets getting tighter every year companies are looking for every possible way of saving a few $. If opensource can provide this saving then more and more companies will switch..

I personally think ALL goverments should consider using opensource software to save money which could be spent better elsewhere like Health,Education,Transport etc...

rseuhs is right! Do people really think that all the companies in the world are going to use this crap and risk loosing a large % of customers? Are the likes of amazon and others using linux just going to give in and jump back in bed with micro$oft?

And on top of that it is going to be 3-4 years before this is available? You can't miss the news every month about more companies moving over to Linux because of costs and security? With companies cutting costs left right and center do you think they will suddenly be able to afford to go back to M$?

This will fail because they will be too late! If they tried this a few years ago it may of worked but not now!

Do people really think M$ should be controlling this sort of environment? Look at their past history of security! For gods sake there was a post on theregister just today about security flaws in the media player again! Something about running scripts automatically! For gods sake why is a media player running scripts in the background?!?!

And lastly I can't believe Intel & AMD are really going to force all their customers to use M$, Think of all the linux clusters filled with hundreds of their processors. They would loose the custom of the companies that set these farms up. Would they really want to loose the $$$ as they all go to alternative processors without this virus in them..

M$ called linux a cancer but this is the real cancer. And a Cancer that we must stop before it spreads. Write your letters to AMD and Intel telling them what a Big mistake they are making by jumping into M$ bed. Tell them that you won't but their processors. If enough people do this then maybe they would re-consider this suicidal move..
