  1. Product of our environment? on Measuring Pollution In Humans · · Score: 2, Insightful
    Enough to give you a bit of a pause, isn't it? All of these pollutants that we have dumped into the environment, now coming home to roost in us.

    As far as a solution - how to clean yourself up?? It may be too late for that; water is contaminated, air is contaminated, food is contaminated --- time to set up that vacuum-pod in some sort of earth orbit....

    I work for the fed. Our sensitive material is shredded through a large, commercial shredder. It only does a vertical shred, so you could reconstruct fairly easily. The best part is this: once the shredding is bagged, it goes out to our dumpster out back in the alley. It is not secure, guarded, or anything else.

    Also, per our regulations, if you don't run it through the shredder, you have to manually tear up the piece of paper 6 times. This is social security numbers, addresses, medical information, etc.

    I have often wondered how wrong this is, but my boss never seems concerned when I bring it up.

    Try these:

    ++ Learn to use the keyboard - there are easy keystroke shortcuts to perform the mouse clicks for you.

    ++ Move the computer out of the bedroom into another room.

    ++ Tell your girlfriend to get over it.

    ++ Get another girlfriend.

    ++ Go to bed with your girlfriend (what the hell are you doing at night anyway?).

    of the Fed, I would have to agree. Where I work at, we rely (almost 100%) on Microsoft products (OS, applications built with Office, etc), so we are bombarded with updates, patches, and alerts. Also, I am the tech support in the District Office here, so whenever there is a problem with a workstation, it is usually (75% or so) user-related. In other words, they didn't know what the hell they were doing. My agency is one of the few that actually improved since last year, but we have a very long way to go before I would put my trust in them.

    In addition, those of you who sound surprised, try reading The Myth of Homeland Security by Marcus Ranum (here. It is surprisingly accurate, and not just another 'chicken little' diatribe.

    As I read the postings here, one theme keeps coming up -- "I can't believe Apple (or any other corporation) would sttop to price fixing on a popular consumable."

    Please - why the shock and surprise? Apple doesn't have to lower the price, for Christmas or any other reason. The ipod is a hot item - for whatever reason. Apple will get the sales, whether or not the 1/2 dozen of you who think that they should lower the price or you just won't buy one continue to have your little coniptions....

    Apple has very strict price points they sell and have their resellers sell their products. Best Buy/Circuit City/whoever contractually cannot lower the price without Apple's say-so.
