  1. Re:QoS? on Why BitTorrent Causes Latency and How To Fix It · · Score: 1

I'm running DDWRT and have it set to give my VOIP gateway top priority, but it doesn't seem to do squat. I have to pause my torrents every time I want to use VOIP, otherwise the call cuts out so bad that it's impossible to have a coherent conversation.

  2. Longevity on 512GB Solid State Disks on the Way · · Score: 1

  3. Inaccurate Story on Battlestar Galactica To Continue After All · · Score: 2, Informative

David Eick didn't say that the series would not be ending with the fourth season; all he said was that nothing had been officially announced. Also, it has been known that the season will have 22 episodes for quite some time now, and that the 2 of them will actually be the Pegasus "movie."

  4. My recommendations on The Last Games You'd Play? · · Score: 1
Only one of my top 20 favorite games is a console game: Chrono Trigger (for the Super Nintendo). But the most of the other games on my last are more than 5 years old, so they don't require a high-end computer to play them. Here are the ones I would recommend most, in addition to Chrono Trigger:
    1. Deus Ex
    2. System Shock 2
    3. Fallout 1
    4. Fallout 2
    5. Half-Life

Paul Campbell left Battlestar Galactica for this?!? I had my hopes set high, particularly when I read that the show was written by Scrubs and Family Guy writers, but it was just as painful to watch as most other sitcoms on TV (the same shows that the show lampoons).

  6. uTorrent Azureus on Azureus Inc. Moves Toward Commercialization · · Score: 2, Informative

I had been using Azureus for quite a long time, but recently started to look for an alternative because Azureus is such an enormous resource-hog. I wasn't optimistic; Azureus has a lot of great features that I didn't want to part with. Then I found uTorrent. It has most, if not all of the features that I loved about Azureus, and it's extremely resource-efficient. Minutes after I ran uTorrent for the first time, I was uninstalling Azureus.

  7. System Shock 2 - One of the best games of all-time on Abandoned Games · · Score: 1
System Shock 2 is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made, both by gamers and gaming publications. It is one of my favorite games of all-time; second only to Deus Ex.

For those who haven't played the game, I highly recommend checking it out; it remains an amazing and compelling gaming experience to this day. The game is an FPS/RPG hybrid, and it isn't necessary to have played the first game to understand or enjoy it.

Some used copies of the game can be found at GameTZ (http://gametz.com/aGames/PC/System+Shock+2.html). Alternatively, the game routinely shows up on popular BitTorrent sites. After you get ahold of the game, you'll want to download the excellent Rebirth mod (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/etienne.aubert/sshock/ssh ock_rebirth.htm) and upgraded texture pack (http://shtup.home.att.net/), which both really help the game to look much less dated. (Some torrents include the mods, as they're considered almost essential.)

I'm not sure if this post will imspire anyone to check the game out, but I hope I've helped add the game to at least one gamer's all-time favorites list.

  8. Re:Serious Sam on Two-Player Games for Mixed Skill Level Players? · · Score: 1

I agree that Serious Sam is an excellent option, for all of the reasons mentioned above, but primarily the fact that when you die, you just respawn. No penalty. My girlfriend (now my wife) had never played an FPS before, but she got the hang of quickly (I was really impressed with how quickly she got used to the keyboard/mouse combo we're all familiar with). It's mindless, it's fun, it's frantic, and these days, it's likely to be found cheaply and will run on many older systems.

  9. Re:Dell does it cheaper on Another Ars Ultimate Budget Box · · Score: 1

That's what I'm thinking... why bother building your own machine when you can order a pre-built, warrantied machine for at least as inexpensively through Dell? Of course, Dell is Intel-only, but when we're talking about a non-gaming rig, it doesn't really matter. This is one of the lamest news items I've seen on Slashdot in a while.

  10. The Suicidal Music Industry on Sticky Tape Defeats Sony DRM Copy Protection · · Score: 1

The main reason I no longer purchase music CDs (at all) is I don't want to have to dick around with a CD like this in order to use it the way I see fit. Ironically, the industry's spending so much money and effort on what it thinks is the best way to preserve sales is actually causing it to die. It's rather remarkable that everyone plainly recognizes it except for the industry itself. I'm not complaining, mind you; the sooner the industry self-destructs, the better off music artists will be.

LCDs are on the shelves primarily because average-joe consumers think they look cool; it's as simple as that.

I'm sticking with CRT for the time being because they're less expensive, allow for higher refresh rates, and can display in many resolutions without having to stretch/shrink/distort an image. When LCDs can match CRTs in those respects, I'll gladly convert.

Gameboy Color, SNES, and Genesis are pretty dang old, so it's not a very significant accomplishment. PC emulators for these consoles have existed for nearly a decade.

First of all -- and I'd think this to be plainly obvious to anyone with half of a fucking brain -- destroying a country is slightly more serious than someone getting a blow job. That more than one person in this forum is neglecting that fact is absolutely shocking, and genuinely frightens me about the direction of the United States of America.

Second of all, Clinton shouldn't have been on trial for impeachment for getting a blow job in the first place. That he was should be far more worthy of outcry and riot than his lying about it.

And thirdly, while Clinton may very well have believed there were WMDs in Iraq, Bush had no evidence to that effect whatsoever, lied to the American people about it (and continues to do so to this very day), and proceeded to murder thousands of U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians for no other reason than to get some more of that tasty oil. And oh yeah, he got rid of a "brutal dictator" in the process... one that posed no credible threat to the U.S., and one of very many "brutal dictators" on this planet -- but the only one with so much delicious oil in his back yard.
