  1. Exactly... on iVillage Renounces Pop-up Advertising · · Score: 1

Exactly, I would NOT buy something that uses popups, over something that doesn't. I would rather buy from something that people have told me is good, not what a popup, popunder, or whatever screams at me.

  2. Umm, that's wrong on iVillage Renounces Pop-up Advertising · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually, read 'The Tipping Point'. Its a book on behavior of people, and it ties in closely with advertising and marketing. Word of mouth AND having a good product (for the companies selling the product, not those trying to sell popups), are good and effective forms of advertisment.

You telling someone that Alienware computers are the best things have you have ever touched, and that linux rocks- does alot more for the products than banners and popups that say "BUY ALIENWARE NOW!!!" or "LINUX ROCKS YOUR BOX".

Seriously, were you drawn to Linux or slashdot because of a popup? Or was it because of talking to people and because they in all seriousness are awesome products and services?
Word of mouth is advertising, and it can be done actively. Giving employees the product for free (if it's highly visable or catchy), will get them to tell others about it and for others to see the benefits. Think Cable ISPs, when they started (and now), most of them gave their service free to their employees. Do you think that this lost them money? No, it gave them money, because all their friends saw how much it rocked their 56K modems, and got it ASAP. They didn't need popups, banner or spam to do it- an awesome product and hearing it from someone else is advertisment in itself

Now this doesn't make iVillage money, but why did they need such agressive advertising in the first place. I personally wouldn't serve though them anyway. I would probably go through someone that I would pay some sum of money a month to host, rather than having banners. In addition, if you are paying for it, they will probably support you better- ever tried to call Geocities about scripting problems on their server, or asking them if they would update to Perl 5.6?

Sometimes boards that have some of the features that you want, don't have all the features that you want, and when you spend alot on a good server/workstation board, you can't always jump to the newest standard on a whim.

It probably takes, what one day to restore that stuff at the most? If you are running redundant systems, then it should be a seemless swap, while you work on one set of systems, the others are still running, so you don't have any downtime.
If it takes you one day, and you are getting paid (or costing) 5K a day... I guess you make about what... (260 working days * 5K) = 1.3 million a year doing IT grunt work? What county do you work for again, I want to work there too...

Anyways, I hear of places all the time claiming anywhere from 5K to 250K in damages, for simple things that in no way cost that. Look at what they said that Kevin Mitnick cost the Telcos...
It's all BS, it doesn't cost that much. Anyway, what I think of is odd, is that they are charging for under 10K in damages. Normally the Police, or FBI won't even listen to you, if you aren't claiming some huge amount of damages, let alone actually go charge someone.

Not that it really matters, but I would like to know the actually size in bytes of a drive that they are selling me, and in mb (where 1mb == 1024kb, 1kb == 1024 bytes, not 1 == 1000)
Would it really be much trouble for them to say 198 gb hard drive? I remember when they used to sell 40mb hard drives, and say they were 40mb, and if it was off by 2gb in size, people would have been pissed (or really happy).

  13. O'Reilly's is obvious... on Best Computer Books For The Smart · · Score: 2

I think that O'Reilly's has put out more quality and less fluffy technical books than any other publisher. Their books on Perl are Masterful, and they really care about the computer and technical topics that matter, not stupid stuff about "Windows ME Super Secrets"
I think that their stuff on Bioinformatics is great, because few others are covering that. Or books on just Regular Expressions. Other publishers might touch on something like that for 2 seconds, and then leave. I haven't seen anything written by them that gets your hopes up too much. They don't promise that you will Master C++ in 7 days, or 24 hours (which I think is what some of the people in my Com Sci classes thought they could do, but they failed, after trying to cram everything in in one night). They don't claim that programming games is easy, and that anyone can kick out quality game engines.
Alot of publishers put out these books that offer too much, often more than they really offer.

The books for dummies are ok for people who have never touched a computer, and don't really want to know much more than the basics, but they really aren't gonna do that much for you

I have my own small studio, and I use Protools, not ACID to record, because I would rather work harder with it and get a higher quality result (yes, Protools with give you a higher quality, just look at the convertors on a 192 interface vs your sbLive).
I have used Techinics 1200s, I thought they were great, I have used a Comodore 64 since I was 3, and it's been a great ride. I don't think that people should just jump into something without knowing any background with it.

Do these DJs who some even call themselves musicians even know the notes in D Superlocrian? What's a Tritone sub? Do you even know a major chord from a diminshed chord or do you just call it 'that weird one'? Don't tell me that classical and jazz training isn't worth anything- look at what Sir Martin did for the Beatles...

I am sure that you could rip apart a Gamecube, PS2, and an Xbox and fit them all in one system with a 400-600 watt power supply(modified) (or just use the ones that the systems came with). I have s Supermicro S-760 case that I know would fit the guys of all of them.

That would be quite a system to show off, better yet, rackmount it in a 4U case... or even better make 1U rack products of each of the systems, with supercool looking faceplates, with an LCD on each to show the game name, or something about the system status at least.... These are really cool though for their small footprint, but personally I have been carrying around a Supermicro S-760 case for a few years now fully loaded, and its pretty heavy, but I really don't mind- it's strong enough to hold up one end of the table, or to be able to sit my UPS on top. These could be cool for LAN parties, but the exact reason I bought such a large case was for massive expandablity- multiple scsi drives, cdr, dvd, multiprocessor, etc...

It really could be cool for Lans though, but that LianLi alumnium case also fixes weight problem too.

  20. Capping Cable Modems on Myths about Internet growth · · Score: 2

They cap cable modems for good reasons. If you are speaking of a speed cap, it's so their pipe doesn't get hammered. Few people are going to give you a full OC-12 (which is probably what runs to your local node) to use as much as you want. The cable companies pay for bandwidth. It costs them money for ever mb that goes through the pipe to another network. If they have to expand so that every joe on the block can get a full 10mb (your cable modem has a 10mb connector on the back, so that's your 'max'), it would cost them a ton of money, perhaps in 1999 a company would have tried to take a loss and try something crazy like that, but not today.

Some Cable companies put limit caps (10gb or so) on users to allow them to all have good speeds, and make sure that no one is running Warez servers out of their house. They have abuse coordinators that get calls from Adobe, MSFT, etc. all the time, saying that they found software available to all on someone's system. Then the abuse coordinator, normally just asks them to stop for first time offenders ( I think, it's not my job). Most people don't use more than 15gb/month on normal access. I used to use alot more, then I was hosting LAN parties all the time, and was actually downloading mp3s. I personally can't stand the way that mp3s sound over my speakers (which are very, very good), so I only like to listen to CDs or SACDs if I can get them. With 11 computers hooked up, I probably only use about 4-7 gb/month of traffic. Yes, sometimes I have used much more, but never more than 15gb/month. If you use a proxy server such as Squid or others, then you can cache some pages, and speed up a few things, and use a little less bandwidth. If you are seriously using more than 20gb/month of bandwidth, i AM pretty impressed. I mean you could be running a mirror of something out of your house, which would be cool, but you really should get a larger pipe to try something like that. Our cable company offers 4mb/2mb lines just for things like that with static IPs. I have seen some that offer over a 40mb direct fibre line to your door.

Hey don't complain that they 'owe' you or something, let's just be thankful that we have broadband, I remember a few years ago the highest that most of us ever saw was an ISDN at work, and perhaps a T-1 at school (that was normally overworked).
