I work for a university that does oceangraphic research. The radio connections, when radio is used - its mostly satelite, are always encrypted. The machines that aquire the data here aren't hooked up to the internet. The only way somebody is going to access that data is if they break down the door to the server room and log on to the data stream machine. Even then .. it's only recieving data. Of course if you really wanted to hack one you could just get the coords and go physically hack the boui itself .... not like they are anything more than a floating hunk of metal.

This is the way the government works. I wouldn't be suprised if our government is currently pursuing an equivalent system. The government makes the carriers (backbone, isps) pay for a right-of-way on the physical cabeling through their districts. They also have to pay large amounts of taxes on using this infastructure.

With wireless the government loses out on any direct profit from communication systems, because where the simplicity of wireless comes in it also brings a giant headache for them. I expect to hear something along these lines happening any time in the near future.

CAPPS just plain doesn't work. I am a privacy advocate and have sent several letters to my congressmen and representatives apposing CAPPS, but there are graver issues involved here. Beyond the fact that the government will have extremely large neural networked databases built on people to be used for "national security" and to "keep people safe" it actually makes air travel less safe from attack!

Check out the Carnival Booth paper put out by MIT. It is long and technical, but well worth the read. I would much rather go back to the private security agencies instead of this bullshit TSA no-hs-education-required-we-dont-do-background-che cks-on-our-employess-for-your-safety scam. Advanced PHP Programming was recently reviewed here and it was upon reading that review that I decided to pick up a copy. It serves as an introduction to OOP to those who are unfamiliar and does a good job in covering the specific mechanics of how things operate in PHP. The book even includes some good info on some Zend Engine hacking.

Where's the controversy? They got thrown into court by Microsoft, the ones who claim trademark to Windows and every likeness, and they were pressured to get rid of the name Lindows. I'm by no means a supporter of Microsoft, but making a product that looks and feels exactly like another and even has a simliar sounding product name is wrong no matter what side of the OS fence you're on. I was always tought that two wrongs don't make a right.

I think this would be a wonderful thing to be launched in the US. Name brands and recognition are what get products sold here and Dell is the Marlboro (McDonalds, Coca-Cola, etc.) of the desktop computer world. If anybody has the power to get the linux desktop market started, because lets face it linux's current market is mainly database and web application, it is most certainly Dell.
