Stop and Shop (or A&P - whatever) store brand tortilla chips

I'd guess that (assuming Tostitos' popularity via advertisement, etc.) that the consumer might be more inclined to lean towards the brand name.

Now take that to Dell. User goes to buy a computer, doesn't know printers that well, but has heard of HP being a solid brand of printers. Sees the Dell brand as a "cheesy rip off store brand" and buys the HP...

P.S. I have nothing against store brand tortilla chips. ;^)

Well, I've never had the problem you had when going from Basic to Dynamic, but when I was doing software mirroring, it was on a HP LPr rackserver with a pretty simple 2 disk setup. All done through Windows, never noticed any before/after performance loss. In my testing, I had to do was move the original disk out of the slot, put the mirror copy in it's place, and it booted right up. Then if I broke the mirror it was ready to start all over again.

Right now (moved on to a different - less technical - company), I have a Dell PowerEdge server that I inherited using a PERC 2/Si RAID 5 config. Windows 2000 (just upgraded from NT4) is none the wiser as to how it's setup, and lists the disk as Basic. Downside is, the Dell RAID setup is pricey, and if your customers are cheap, well...

If worse came to worse, I'm sure booting off of the Win2k CD and going into the Recovery Console with a will save you if the drive does act flaky, but I dunno the specifics on that.

A friend of mine was living in Japan when the PS2 was released there. He got one pretty soon after they came out. He has now moved back to the US after 5 years living abroad and has discovered that he can't play games that he buys here on it. A modchip could help that (that is, if either of us could pull off the soldering work...)

Mod chips are also used in the reverse situation. There are a lot of cool games that are only released in Japan than will never make it to the shores of the US. With a modchip installed, you can play those games.

In both cases, all the developers got their money from the games, and Sony sold them each a console. I don't see any harm in this.

Not trying to "flame away" at you, but there are alternative uses for mod chips. And I'm sure you're right in saying that my two examples are exceptions to the rule, but it's not absolute.

The only time I really saw this game played was when my brother had it. His character had an attractive next door neighbor, the only problem was, she was married. So, he invited the husband into the backyard for a cookout, and then built a shed around him with no doors.

After a little while of begging to be let out, complaining that he was hungry and needed to use the bathroom, he died. My brother then started to woo the poor widow, and they were married shortly after.

So you see, almost any inane game can be made interesting... if you're sick enough. After that instance however, the game DID get rather boring rather quickly.

If you're happy with what you have and think that it will carry you for the next two years (which is how long the upgraded license would take you), stay with what you got. Leave the poor desktop users alone if possible and go to Linux servers if you need upgrades on that side of things. Samba, Apache - they're your FRIENDS.

I too am the IT Manager for a small company, and we're more or less "forced" to stay with Windows because of the Tax/Audit software that we use 24-7. Worked in the campus computer labs for my work study cash and learned how to deal with users there.

Programming classes did nothing but annoy me, so I didn't take that route. When I graduated, my degree and experience was enough to get me in the door doing telephone tech support for an MS outsourcer (yep, we were busy). Four years and a SysAdmin job pass and now I'm the IT Manager at an accounting firm. Who knew?

It's hard to say where you'll end up from today, but you gotta keep your options open. College will do that for you. Build networking (people) skills in school and use those connections to get you the job finally decide you want when you graduate.
