The purpose of a stock market is for people and companies to buy and sell stock at the price set by the market. Not a gambling arena for high-powered computers. I don't dispute the benefits of HFT, but I do question whether it brings unnecessary danger to investors. Like the flash crashes.
I really want to use Linux as my desktop OS, but there are always things that don't work, or work as well as on Windows, such as drivers and Flash. Without good drivers, the performance can be poor, or quality can be degraded, especially with graphics. This is not the fault of Linux itself though. In the end, I just need something that works. I don't want to search through forums to figure out what configuration file I need to edit to get my sound to work.
Balancing the budget? Harper wants to spend billions on war planes that hugely over-budget and do not meet Canada's requirements. The F35 is a STRIKE fighter, designed to strike targets in a foreign land after F22s have taken out air defences. Canada does not need planes for attacking, but rather defending and patrolling. I think a mix of Super Hornets and drones would be way cheaper and do a better job. Harper wants to cut social, environmental, and science, then spend 3x more on the military toys. He wants these planes so Canada can go play war with the US. All Canadians should be thankful that he wasn't in power when the US invaded Iraq, because I can sure as hell that Harper would have gladly joined the US in any war.
I wish phone companies would sell a phone with stable firmware. I bought an LG Optimus 2x, and my phone crashed 10 minutes after I turned on the phone for the first time. Also, there was a memory leak, where the phone slowed to a crawl if it wasn't rebooted after a few days. But luckily, the frequent crashes meant that the phone wouldn't make it past a few days without a reboot anyway. Without CM, I would have bought a Samsung by now.
It's also a marketing problem. What the hell is the difference between Windows RT, Windows RT Pro, Windows 8, Windows 7? Wait, there's no Windows RT Pro, but there's a Surface RT and Surface Pro, right? What's the difference again? One is thicker than the other, and the cheaper one runs ARM. I would do more research, but I just don't care enough. I'm sure I'm not the only one. People just want shit that works, they don't care if runs on ARM or x86.
To be fair, it is really hard to remember so many dates and appointments when you're so busy. If only there was some sort of software, which can remind you of appointments and dates....
No bonuses when companies have losses, and no golden parachutes when a CEO gets fired. At least the shareholders should be able to claw them back. The bank situation is out of control, how can any bonuses be awarded after the biggest financial crash since the great depression? It makes no sense. The problem is that it is now official policy not to prosecute bank fraud. Just a slap on the wrist fine, which essentially announces that fraud is allowed, and the fine is the cost of doing that business. Let's face it, the elites have figured out how to game the political system, and they are robbing us blind.
In Europe, the price tag you see is what you pay. It makes so much sense. I don't care what the before tax price is. Hidden fees are illegal. This includes buying airline tickets. The North American system where you see some price, then have to guess what you will have to pay is arcane, bordering fraudulent. If you go to aircanada.com, I have to click through to the last step before actually purchasing the ticket to see what the real price is. Often the final price is double what was initially quoted. If I go to lufthansa.com, the fees are already included in the price, so easy. I remember getting a mobile phone contract in Canada, where I was surprised to discover that the actual monthly price was significantly higher than what I was quoted, even though I specifically asked exactly what the final price after all fees was. I eventually switch to prepaid, because I hated the idea that the phone company can dictate what I have to pay, regardless of what I agreed to.
Trust me, it's the installer. Have you ever installed any Oracle product? Maybe it installs right the first time, but see what happens when you need to install a new version. Or uninstall the old version. Oracle shits all over your computer and doesn't clean up after itself.
Should people unconditionally follow the law? It's not a long time ago that it was against the law to hide Jewish families to protect them from being murdered.
Have you guys seen the movie "Idiocracy"? It's a hilarious movie, which is probably the most accurate depiction of the future... This process has now started.
I installed Windows 8 a few weeks ago, and it runs rock solid. The stability issues are probably related to drivers. My first impression of Windows 8 is that it's basically Windows 7 without the start menu. But it boots up fast. With an SSD, I can boot and be checking my mail in no time. After installing Classic Start Menu, it works great. Metro is really dumb for the desktop, but I can imagine it would be good for a tablet...
Personally, I find renting a DVD a pain in the ass. If I have a movie in mind that I want to watch, it's not there, or already rented out. Then I have to go search for another movie to watch. When I find a movie to rent, I either watch it right away, or decide to watch it later and "buffer" it on my PC. Now I have to go back to the movie store to return it, another hassle. To be honest, it's so much easier to go watch a movie on iTunes or other online services.
What would be awesome is USB stick rentals. I bring a my own USB stick, and get a copy of the DVD on my USB stick for a rental fee. I wouldn't mind if there was some time limited DRM on it because it would be like a rental. This eliminates the supply problem and the return problem. But this is essentially what a streaming service provides, so it would really only be popular with people with bad Internet connections. Also, I doubt the MPAA would be happy with this.

I am a dude, and I know how dudes think. And normal dudes are already creepy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this fear.

The fact that a lot of the work is being done by the javascript language itself makes this somewhat less impressive.
The fact that IT IS done with only 1KB of javascript is even more impressive! If anything, it illustrates the power of javascript.

Apple: All your iGadgets, are belong to us!
The problem with reasonable solutions is, it doesn't help the rich get richer.
Ron Paul has crazy ideas, such as not bailing out the banks, balancing the budget, and not going to war in Iraq.

I would add one exception... I wish goatse was censored... Now it's burned into my memory... arrrrgh!!
Didn't Tivo solve this commercial problem? But weren't they forced to cripple some features?
Because corporations aren't people, you can't throw them in jail! Oh wait... wasn't it decided that corporations are people?
That's eons away in the context of consumer electronics. By that time, they might be the last one switching to online streaming.
Windows 8 is really confusing, until you install Classic Shell to bring back the start menu. I never use the Metro UI for anything.

That's true, it's illegal to urinate in public, we should jail all 5 year old kids who pee their pants in public. It's against the law!
