    I agree with you, but the reason this isn't going to happen is that tv-networks would become obsolete. The producers could just sell their stuff directly on the net, to the whole world at once.

    I'd be happy with that, of course. Screw the networks. But that's not how they'll see it...

    Bah. I'm from Finland, and all of my friends had programmable calculators in high school. They remove so much monotonous work from the process that I couldn't live without one.

    However, when taking tests we had to solve all integrals on paper. Cheating with a calculator isn't going to help much if the only thing you can write down is a number...

    Extreme reactions are never good solutions. Banning calculators would be about as smart as deleting grep because it might have a security flaw.

    Another user already made a joke about how ask slashdot usually works, but in all seriousness... wouldn't it be much more efficient if you'd just wait a few hours, and then simply answer people directly?

    You could answer questions you personally find interesting, even if they're at -1, Troll. And you could have actual discussions with people - no need to have a stale follow up article with your answers. I think everyone would have a lot more fun. If you have the time, that is.

    Why is this modded funny? I switched back to a wired mouse for the exact same reason.

    (Well, that, and I realized that buying batteries for the thing just to get rid of a cable that doesn't even disturb me was a horrible thing to do to the environment)

    Not to mention that in civilized countries, "downtown" is a pleasant place to live, with lots of services and jobs close to popular apartments for both families and singles. No need for everyone to live in huge monotonous suburbs with one car per family member.

    Yes, but you live in Helsinki, which imho is abnormally warm anyway (probably due to the Gulf of Finland). How would you compare Lapland to similar parts of Canada?

    I agree about Europe being relatively warm in general, though.

    It's not that clear at all. They're probably making a loss on her, since customers who use up a lot of resources force the store to get more employees. Plus, you can't just put the returned clothes back on the shelf, again requiring more resources before they can be resold.

    And come on, is this someone you want to do business with:

    My college just switched from Digital Unix to Windows Server.

    I sent them a letter very politely asking what the fuck they were smoking, but never got a response. I wondered about it until I found out that I hadn't received some very important emails. Yup, they'd managed to break redirects during the upgrade.

    It's now been three months and things still aren't working properly. Morons. Sooner or later they'll find this attached to their door with a knife.

    Why is it that any communications method I can think of in the US from cell phones to internet access is so bastardized by vendor lock in? I thought you guys were supposed to have a competitive market...

    When I was faced with the same problem, all I had to do was switch ISP's, and now I get 2M/512k for 60 euros a month with a static IP as part of the basic service. Not to mention that their website practically encourages users to run their own servers.

    Good idea, but the ideal would really be that the phones would boot off anything provided by the user. Who'd worry about viruses if we could run an OS with only one remote hole in the default install, in more than 8 years?

    I don't know about FreeBSD, but I installed OpenBSD without using any removable media at all, by booting it off the network...

    Much simpler than any OS I've installed before. It's not just floppies that need to die, it's removable media in general. I wonder how many landfills we generate just by copying stuff using CD-R's when we could use the net...

    He's right. The logical conclusion of today's technologies is that we'll eventually just call a dynamic DNS address, and your "roaming" phone will be an IPv6 device jumping from one network to another. (I fail to see why he thinks we'll still be using numbers, though.)

    The telecom companies will resist, of course. We'll just have to hope they don't have the cash to buy senators... oh what am I thinking, screw it.

    Yeah, sorry, that was a conscious decision to make the post simpler. I felt a discussion of the actual methods was slightly off topic. See my response to one of the other replies. It may not be an ideal solution, but one idea that could be considered.

    Also, I was specifically talking about the transport mechanism having no cost (besides the electrons, of course). Once the file is created, or the software written, there is no additional cost.

    When everyone with a computer can enjoy your work, it's completely immoral to deny them that pleasure simply because they can't afford to participate in your payment mechanism. The fixed costs need to be paid for by someone, yes, but not by creating artificial scarcity.

    Well, I doubt most people here would like this solution, but one way would be for the government to tax all music listeners a reasonable amount and grant them a blanket license for everything.

    This way poor people wouldn't pay anything, and rich people would pay slightly more. The rich shouldn't mind, however, since even they can then have access to more music than all their money could've bought earlier. The money could be fairly distributed to the musicians by tracking downloads per artist.
