The number of patents is not an issue. Contents of patents is.
No matter how many patents are recoginzed. It's another issue whether they can influence the world by them.
Ballmer decided to compete with Oracle and potentially SAP. I don't think M$ can't win against Oracle and SAP, however, looking at growth of Google and Yahoo in same time frame. What he had to do as CEO was so obvious. It was wiser decision to enhance search/web based business to compete Google, Yahoo or anything else than pursuing Oracle with SQL Server and acquiring business software marker like Navision.
The reason is simple. Without significant discount, M$ OS and other mainstream product is still too expensive for average cosumer, and I guess even for luxury consumer.
Earning $1000 is still quite decent even in Beijing, capital of ROP and one of the most rich area in the countory. $1000 in china is almost equivalent to $10,000 in US from my feeling.
If I were one of them, I feel quite painful to pay more than $100 just for OS. Some people will and can choose Linux as alternative, however, most of other don't even know what is linux.
Until the day when prices drop hard enough or majority of people become aware of linux, naked PC hardly ends.
Actually I have used cell phone with buildin IC card base e-cash to buy breakfirst this morning. NTT docomo has relased last year. There are huge install base (more than ten million)
e-cash system is called EDY which has same technology base as Octopus.
When you buy Cell-phone with e-Cash, Java application to control is preloaded.
You just need activate it and ask store value at anyplace who has EDY terminal. You can also check how much you have through Java application. It's one of the advacntage over real plain IC card.
Another adavatage is by adding Japa application, it can handle more than one payment system. NTT docomo is in talk with them very long time. If they succeeded, I will have cell phone with e-cash, credit cards and metro path.
BBS in Japan has already stopped comparing iPod with NW-HD3, as latter is so laughable. It's recoginized as a kind of joke from SONY.
What is at discussion right now is whether Sony's PSP is more attractive or not.
Pros
1) less expensive(about 20,000yen)
2) able to play motion pitcure
3) of course games.
Cons
1) storage support is limited to memory stick Duo(upto 512 mb?)
2) initial quality problem( http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cf6y-oot/)
I personaly have iPod Photo 60GB, however
it's maybe nice to have PSP after quality problem are resolved.
PHS is also phasing out too currently. You can get info from newspaper if you can read.
As for BBC link, I can give you 2 evidence to show it's wrong. Firstly now I have WCDMA phone by NTT Docomo. Secondly read this if you can "http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/corporate/company/glob al/index.html"
. It says NTT Docomo will use WCDMA. You may not know that CDMA2000 is operated by AU which is other telco company.
Could you tell me how did you make up your fantasy that PDC is replaced by PHS?
You may not know this either, PHS is used in Thailand, Taiwan and a part of China. Europe and America don't mean world.
Japanese Local Cell phone standard is called "PDC". Japan has
simply failed it to be global standard. It's less band width hungry than
GMS but lacks international roaming feature GMS has.
Using local standard is not what Japanese goverment has wanted.
In terms of Business, it's okay that other world uses GMS because anyway NOKIA and other GMS phone manufatcurer are importing a lot of semiconductor and other parts from
Japan. What does matter is how much money we make.
Finally GMS phone will be never used in Japan anyway. Use CDMA or 3G phone for compatibity. They have already taken off in Japan Market.
>The Sparcstation 2 has to have been one of the best workstations ever made.
I can't agree with you more than I do. SparcStation2 with
SunOS4.1.3 or 4.1.4 were the best combination I have
ever seen.
Actually those combination was the first Sun machine
I have ever used. It's so beautifully engineered it's quite
pleasant expericnce to look inside of books when upating
CPU or adding memory.
I'm really sad to see that SUN is so behind market.
I agree with you. I have heard Linus stated "Desktop
is a key market. We need to take control of it." It was in 1995. Kernel version was 1.2.x.
Since that time he said a lot of things
about Linux but never said "It's year of Desktop" or "It's ready for Desktop" as long as I remember.
I believe he has something extraordinary about Linux's
readiness as Desktop OS.

Their profiles are available at URL below.

Actually short guy wears fake glasses, not real glass.
So, my room is still awfully messy. Actually I gotta condo in down town are in Tokyo to stow all gears and books and comics more thean 10 years ago. It's already over-capacitied, although I'm still living alone. hmm
That's the reason why I'm one of the fool hoping stock market to regain its boom in 90's.
I'd rather propose Microsoft to pay money for users who download and apply securitypatch. Giving them, let me say, $5 everytyime would be enough reason for users to keep PC updated to defend from worm. Furthermore, it would give Microsoft a reason to improve security quality.
Better software quality means less frequently security fix be issued. Microsoft would be less damaged, at least financially.
Otherwise, as of now, Microsoft has no reason to improve their software quality. Just to blame lazy users not applying security fix.
I understood your background to point out. But what
I've learned from my experence is completely different
from yours.
I've spent writing, debugging, evaluating and purchasing
a lot of s/w and h/w for past 16 years.
a visit from a salesman
Sales reps are useless people. I have never met any single
rep who gave me a impression that he is inteligent enough
to sell his products, and gave me any useful advice. I've recoginized reps as inevitable friction of biz process. I don't
understant you like a visit from a salesman. it's just a waste of time.
product brochures
that's noting too. brochures are more useful than sales reps. I agree. but materials from software vendors have always big problem. they don't state what are
NOT possible . After wasting a lot of times, I had decided to put no trust on vendor's brochures.
a demonstration from an expert in the product
demonstration is nice but, on OSS you can download and
build demonstration yourselves. If it's not a case you are
doing beyond your ablity. Be cautious. demonstration will
give you illusion but never enhance you ability
documentation
I must admit documentation of OSS are generally poor.
But source code is available. when source code is not
enough, please be cautious again. you are doing what you
can understand.
there is no perfect documentation in the world if it exists,
it's called "source code". computer doesn't understand
human language. I prefer OSS with source code and some
documentatin to proprietary software in any case, although
OSS documentation quality and coverage is generally more miserable.
comprehensive on line help
I don't aurgue this point.
a road map or new features release plan
When current status of OSS product can't meet you expectation. don't use it. It's first principle. use
proprietay one, or look for another,or build yourself.
What you are missing is just a gap of biz process between
OSS and proprietary software business. lamenting lack of
them is not productive. different environment needs different biz process and way of thinking.
Every time I read analyst reports insisting that Windows is
cheaper than Linux, I wonder whether they take possible economic damage caused by security risk into account.
Apparently they didn't. Does this incident change their view?
The reason? "Un-American" is the word everyone wants to hear in Asia. Everyone dislikes how Bush adminstration is acting and recognizes as childish, selfish and bully.
Microsoft labeling them as "Un-American" will give them a
lot of credit which can't be achievable by any other way.
As for GM-food, Japanese are rejecteing too. NO GM-food
is available in my reach. In that sense we, Japanese , are
so backwards as European. I'm Japanese, living in Tokyo.
It seems that Gene Modification has been scaring people.
I think it's unreasonable. but once people believe something,
enormous inertia is generated. It's hardly changable without a remarkable event.
American monopolized technologies(So far it's all American,
isn't it?) are more likely to be hated than others.
It's sad.
Is buying Amerincan made product among your options, while invasion of Iraq by U.S. caused ten thouthands innocent civilian death?
More lives are lost in Iraq than in Burmese.
If refusing chinese product makes sense for you, think again.
The number of patents is not an issue. Contents of patents is.
No matter how many patents are recoginzed. It's another issue whether they can influence the world by them.
I know Google is going to build the space elevator to go to the orbit. Kenya is better than SA for that purpose.
Most of their factories are located in remote area. Huge disadvantage to get mass-media coverage.

no reason to accept GMS.
As I has seen masr last summer, it looked so big and red. I wonder when looked back from Mars, what color is earth.
I have seen pitcure from interplanetory orbit to take Earth and Moon in a single pitcture. Color contrast between them has impressed me a lot.

By Nihon Keizai Shinun, the number of death has reached 21. Other 20 persons are heavily wounded. It's tragedy for everyone.
And also, "Alien-tachi" is too funny for movie titile. It migh kill most of aundiences by getting them laugh too much before going to theater.
There is no plural form in Japananese, file company has renamed as "Alien 2".
