    Ballmer decided to compete with Oracle and potentially SAP. I don't think M$ can't win against Oracle and SAP, however, looking at growth of Google and Yahoo in same time frame. What he had to do as CEO was so obvious. It was wiser decision to enhance search/web based business to compete Google, Yahoo or anything else than pursuing Oracle with SQL Server and acquiring business software marker like Navision.

    3 megapixel plus optical zoom or/and motion canceler phone deservers the title of cutting edge in Japan.

    The reason is simple. Without significant discount, M$ OS and other mainstream product is still too expensive for average cosumer, and I guess even for luxury consumer.

    Earning $1000 is still quite decent even in Beijing, capital of ROP and one of the most rich area in the countory. $1000 in china is almost equivalent to $10,000 in US from my feeling.

    If I were one of them, I feel quite painful to pay more than $100 just for OS. Some people will and can choose Linux as alternative, however, most of other don't even know what is linux.

    Until the day when prices drop hard enough or majority of people become aware of linux, naked PC hardly ends.

    Actually I have used cell phone with buildin IC card base e-cash to buy breakfirst this morning. NTT docomo has relased last year. There are huge install base (more than ten million)

    e-cash system is called EDY which has same technology base as Octopus.

    When you buy Cell-phone with e-Cash, Java application to control is preloaded.

    You just need activate it and ask store value at anyplace who has EDY terminal. You can also check how much you have through Java application. It's one of the advacntage over real plain IC card.

    Another adavatage is by adding Japa application, it can handle more than one payment system. NTT docomo is in talk with them very long time. If they succeeded, I will have cell phone with e-cash, credit cards and metro path.

    BBS in Japan has already stopped comparing iPod with NW-HD3, as latter is so laughable. It's recoginized as a kind of joke from SONY.
    What is at discussion right now is whether Sony's PSP is more attractive or not.

    Pros
    1) less expensive(about 20,000yen)
    2) able to play motion pitcure
    3) of course games.

    Cons
    1) storage support is limited to memory stick Duo(upto 512 mb?)
    2) initial quality problem( http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cf6y-oot/)

    I personaly have iPod Photo 60GB, however it's maybe nice to have PSP after quality problem are resolved.

    PHS is also phasing out too currently. You can get info from newspaper if you can read.

    As for BBC link, I can give you 2 evidence to show it's wrong. Firstly now I have WCDMA phone by NTT Docomo. Secondly read this if you can "http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/corporate/company/glob al/index.html" . It says NTT Docomo will use WCDMA. You may not know that CDMA2000 is operated by AU which is other telco company.

    Could you tell me how did you make up your fantasy that PDC is replaced by PHS?

    You may not know this either, PHS is used in Thailand, Taiwan and a part of China. Europe and America don't mean world.

    Japanese Local Cell phone standard is called "PDC". Japan has simply failed it to be global standard. It's less band width hungry than GMS but lacks international roaming feature GMS has.

    Using local standard is not what Japanese goverment has wanted.

    In terms of Business, it's okay that other world uses GMS because anyway NOKIA and other GMS phone manufatcurer are importing a lot of semiconductor and other parts from Japan. What does matter is how much money we make.

    Finally GMS phone will be never used in Japan anyway. Use CDMA or 3G phone for compatibity. They have already taken off in Japan Market.

    no reason to accept GMS.

    As I has seen masr last summer, it looked so big and red. I wonder when looked back from Mars, what color is earth.

    I have seen pitcure from interplanetory orbit to take Earth and Moon in a single pitcture. Color contrast between them has impressed me a lot.

    I can't agree with you more than I do. SparcStation2 with SunOS4.1.3 or 4.1.4 were the best combination I have ever seen.
    Actually those combination was the first Sun machine I have ever used. It's so beautifully engineered it's quite pleasant expericnce to look inside of books when upating CPU or adding memory.

    I'm really sad to see that SUN is so behind market.

    I agree with you. I have heard Linus stated "Desktop is a key market. We need to take control of it." It was in 1995. Kernel version was 1.2.x.

    Since that time he said a lot of things about Linux but never said "It's year of Desktop" or "It's ready for Desktop" as long as I remember. I believe he has something extraordinary about Linux's readiness as Desktop OS.

    According to SGI Japan, Ministory of Education and Science
    has orderd 4 Altix 3700 computer to make up 4 node
    super computer, November 18th.

    Each node, which altix3700 is equipped with 64 cpu. Total
    main memory has reached 1.9TB.

    It's also said that hardwares will be installed and in
    operation in the early half of 2004.

    I'd rather propose Microsoft to pay money for users who
    download and apply securitypatch. Giving them, let me say,
    $5 everytyime would be enough reason for users to
    keep PC updated to defend from worm. Furthermore, it
    would give Microsoft a reason to improve security quality.

    Better software quality means less frequently security fix be
    issued. Microsoft would be less damaged, at least financially.

    Otherwise, as of now, Microsoft has no reason to improve
    their software quality. Just to blame lazy users not applying
    security fix.

    I understood your background to point out. But what I've learned from my experence is completely different from yours.

    I've spent writing, debugging, evaluating and purchasing a lot of s/w and h/w for past 16 years.

    Sales reps are useless people. I have never met any single rep who gave me a impression that he is inteligent enough to sell his products, and gave me any useful advice. I've recoginized reps as inevitable friction of biz process. I don't understant you like a visit from a salesman. it's just a waste of time.

    product brochures

    that's noting too. brochures are more useful than sales reps. I agree. but materials from software vendors have always big problem. they don't state what are NOT possible . After wasting a lot of times, I had decided to put no trust on vendor's brochures.

    a demonstration from an expert in the product

    demonstration is nice but, on OSS you can download and build demonstration yourselves. If it's not a case you are doing beyond your ablity. Be cautious. demonstration will give you illusion but never enhance you ability

    documentation

    I must admit documentation of OSS are generally poor. But source code is available. when source code is not enough, please be cautious again. you are doing what you can understand.

    there is no perfect documentation in the world if it exists, it's called "source code". computer doesn't understand human language. I prefer OSS with source code and some documentatin to proprietary software in any case, although OSS documentation quality and coverage is generally more miserable.

    I don't aurgue this point.

    a road map or new features release plan

    When current status of OSS product can't meet you expectation. don't use it. It's first principle. use proprietay one, or look for another,or build yourself.

    What you are missing is just a gap of biz process between OSS and proprietary software business. lamenting lack of them is not productive. different environment needs different biz process and way of thinking.

    The reason? "Un-American" is the word everyone wants to hear in Asia. Everyone dislikes how Bush adminstration is acting and recognizes as childish, selfish and bully.

    Microsoft labeling them as "Un-American" will give them a lot of credit which can't be achievable by any other way.

    As for GM-food, Japanese are rejecteing too. NO GM-food is available in my reach. In that sense we, Japanese , are so backwards as European. I'm Japanese, living in Tokyo.

    It seems that Gene Modification has been scaring people. I think it's unreasonable. but once people believe something, enormous inertia is generated. It's hardly changable without a remarkable event.

    American monopolized technologies(So far it's all American, isn't it?) are more likely to be hated than others. It's sad.

    "Aliens" was released as "Alien 2" in Japan.

    There is no plural form in Japananese, file company has renamed as "Alien 2".
