Big surprise, there's a lot of things out there that will bear a resemblance. Kind of like how the hammer handle is pretty much the same as an axe handle, both of these objects are designed to be held and operated in say one hand. The idea behind it is that people can have their homebrew apps and still take advantage of the features of more advanced firmwares. Should be interesting to see if it works out.

Well one thought would be that not everyone can afford both a PSP and another portable system to watch DVDs on, or that not everyone wants to bother lugging a bunch of devices around. For some, it's pretty convenient to have the one device.

Myself, I have a PSP, and I buy movies on DVD because I have a home theater. I'd love it if they released DVDs with UMDs in dual packs at a reduced cost, since it would be nice to toss a few movies in my bag along with the games when I travel.

There's quite a few people who buy UMDs for the portability of it, given they have purchased a PSP and wish to use the UMD movie feature instead of going out and buying a new device (portable dvd player). I've asked a few guys who work at stores that sell the movies, they're definitely not disappointed by the sales of them.

I've owned a few MD units, I have to say those are some of the slickest portable media devices I've owned. Only the iPod was able to make me break away from it, and then only grudgingly because I miss the ability to record from practically any audio source.

At one point I had the opportunity to disassemble one of them, the circuitry and mechanisms inside those things are, as you say, ludicrously tiny.

I'll definitely make a point to keep an eye out for those books. Sound like they might be an interesting read. :)

  16. Re:Re-releasing the same products... on iPod nano, iTunes 5, iTunes Phone · · Score: 1

It's actually a very asian way to update products. You start with generation 1 of a product, and with each successive generation you shrink, lighten, enhance, improve, and innovate, not necessarily in that order or all in a particular generation. In the end, you have a palm-sized video camera, or in Apple's case you have a ridiculously tiny iPod with great battery life, bright color screen, and 4 gigs of storage space.

The core functionality doesn't have to change -- video camera, music player, whatever. It's definitely not the "same product", especially when you compare a generation 1 iPod to a nano. In fact, do a product comparison yourself between the two and tell me these are the same two devices.

If anything, you serve to affirm the fact that Apple got the core functions (playing music) right from the very beginning, and in the end all it needed was to do the incremental improvements to utterly annihilate the competition.

  19. Re:MMOGs on WoW Helping or Hurting the Industry? · · Score: 1

The thing with EVE Online is that everyone assumes that flying a battleship or a dreadnought is the end-game and thus they strive for that. Yeah, if you fly a battleship and take part in PVP you're going to be slaving away for hours on end to keep it insured, equip it, and replace it when you lose it.

I find it much more enjoyable to play the game in a frigate or a cruiser. You can spend an hour and mine enough to build/buy and equip a frigate 5 times over, and you don't worry about losing it.

PVP is of course just one goal in EVE, there are literally limitless numbers of goals to the game because you the player make the goal. That's the game's advantage over others, and it's a shame people sink their time so much into the worst timesink goals of the game.

Timesinks are of course not a unique feature with EVE, all MMOs have them. No MMO is geared towards the casual gamer. Efforts to mitigate the timesinks still cannot help you compete against the powergamer who can afford a ton of their personal time to play. It's not really a PROBLEM with the genre, it's just that the entire genre has been designed from game #1 to be a system of reward based on time and effort.

  21. Re:Games are by no means getting easier on Are Games Getting Easier? · · Score: 1

and just how popular are those games? I don't recall any of them hitting a bestseller list at any point. That's not to say they're not great games, Ikaruga for instance is incredibly difficult. At the same time, completing a level is an accomplishment, and it's one of the few games where getting further ahead and breathing that sigh of relief actually means something.

When one looks at the more popular games that have been released lately though, I think the article's point surely applies. World of Warcraft for instance, has close to zero death penalty associated with it. Half-life2 and Doom3 were incredibly easy to finish and continue to only be challenging with online multiplayer modes.
