  1. What is "FUD"? on BBC says "Avoid Explorer" · · Score: 2

I know it's offtopic, and that seems silly to ask and all, but I'm actually being quite serious. :) I see the term used and I was wondering what it means. Thanks in advance!

  2. Enix not my first choice, but... on Square To Merge With Enix · · Score: 2
Hopefully this will be a beneficial collaboration for both companies. As many have pointed out so far, the last bunch of Square efforts for the Final Fantasy series have been more of an achievement in technical prowess than anything else, the last "great" Final Fantasy game being FF7 in my humble opinion. While I haven't been impressed with many of Enix's games per se, they're pretty imaginative and will hopefully bring a lot to the creative table for Square to work with.

Right now there isn't much for console markets where RPGs are concerned, at least not in the US market. One game I'm looking foward to seeing brought over the pond is .hack//sign, a game that can only be described as a simulated MMORPG. Sounds intriguing to me, I'd love to try it.

You make a VERY good point here. Really, it boils down the root of the legal action against them, and that's the integration of IE into the guts of the OS. It's used in admin tools, the desktop itself, etc, etc, etc. To revoke it's overall "rootness" would end up crippling the OS, which has been Microsoft's argument all along. I suppose the simple suggestion is to *gasp* not run the IE components in a rooty mode when it's active in a normal user application. *shrug* Is that even possible? Who knows. :)

  5. XBox Live's AOL Issues on Microsoft vs. Modded Xboxes · · Score: 3, Interesting

One other notable thing I read about this, is that XBox Live doesn't play nice (read: not at all) on AOL's broadband service, and that MS is currently pursuing obtaining rights to have the service work on their network. Not that I'm some kind of AOL sympathizer or anything, I think they're a sad, sad service but you'd think MS would have locked that kind of thing down earlier. Like it or not, there's a pretty hefty userbase on AOL (although admittedly I don't know any numbers on how many people are on their broadband service). Comments?

  8. IPocketPC instead of Palm on Dell Handhelds Released · · Score: 2
With pricing and features like this, Dell is sure to force some changes in the PocketPC market. First and foremost: pricing. I think it's great that Dell's undercutting the other vendors with the Axim, as PocketPC handhelds are so overpriced it isn't even funny. I currently own a Palm handheld (IIIxe) and I'm due for an upgrade. I might be persuaded to go PocketPC as opposed to Palm for that upgrade, if the price is right. I think they're appealing more to people like myself who may be seeing their handheld as more than just a PIM, but as an extension of the PC. If Palm won't cater to that, I'll go elsewhere (even if it's powered by a Microsoft OS).

What's everyone's thoughts on this? Are there other Palm users seriously pondering switching?

  9. Opinions, this soon? on Xbox Live Goes Online · · Score: 3, Insightful
How can people have an opinion on a service that's only days old? Just my opinion of course, but I think there's no way to adequately gauge how good the service is until more games are out for it and more players are on it. Once the community starts to take shape, then you'll be able to say whether the service is good, or just another online thing that's filled with retards.

I think it's great the PS2 and XBox now have their online gaming abilities. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, and I think there's definitely room for both.

Not that I'm advocating Fight Club's Project Mayhem style of retribution for this, but...

I'm assuming these discs come in a vac sealed package of some kind. Wouldn't one way to protest this is to go to the store with a needle and poke some holes in the plastic wrap? :) I suppose a little Dremel tool might work well if it's a hardened case that's sealed, but the whirring noise might arouse suspicion by store staff.

Anyway, my 2c on this whole issue is that it stinks -- if it'll break in 8 hours, I don't want to have to put money down for it.

  11. Latest trend: sliding thingies on Zaurus 5600 Announced · · Score: 4, Interesting
I can't agree with the concept, nor the notion that it's a good idea. Sure, it's neat that it hides the keyboard and all, but this sliding design featured on one of the Palm Tungsten models, and now the Zaurus, is just a bad idea overall. It's a moving part you're going to use all the time, and it'll be the first thing to break. See exhibit A: cell phones with flip covers, or ones with an opening clamshell design. Very slick, very small, but very breakable and are normally the first part of the phone to show its age.

Now, with cell phones it's not so bad because they're not that costly, but with a PDA like the Zaurus or the Tungsten we're talking hundreds of dollars to fix or replace the thing. What was wrong with "software" based keyboards -- the onscreen ones used with current Palms and PocketPC handhelds?

Again -- it's their website. They can comply much or as little as they want, as it pertains to a court order.

I suspect, that they may be violating thier own laws in putting the onus on Google

More than likely, but that doesn't mean they have any kind of jurisdictional authority to enforce their laws on Google. As sovereign nations they have the right to control things that come in and out of their country -- information included. We don't have to agree or disagree with that policy. Regardless, that's ALL they can control.

I guess the point to be made by your bolding of that particular line is that no screening of sites occurs -- which is NOT what the line reads as. It states no screening occurrs BEFORE adding to the indices. It follows with the statement "A search using Google Search Services may produce search results and links to sites that some people find objectionable, inappropriate, or offensive." The two together seem to be mean to indicate objectionable material CAN be filtered out after being added to the indexes, and that the content could be found before that occurs.

Google is being 'slagged' because it affects the integrity of Google as an impartial (aside from the programmed rules) producer of search results. Of course you are right Google can do anything with it's property that it wants, and it will have to suffer the barbs of the consumer in response.

Hold on: what consumer? You? Me? I know I haven't paid for Google, therefore I have no right to demand quality *anything* from them. The fact that I use them as a search engine for free and get decent search results back is just gravy to me.

I do appreciate that for the most part they are only complying with the law, however the results are the results, and results don't care about the law. The results will be tainted by the fact that the dataset has been corrupted and can no longer truely be 'trusted'.

TRUST doesn't factor into it because I never signed an agreement nor read ANYTHING on the Google website that lead me to believe the results would be 100% authentic. *shrug*
