For those of you going on about how theres ONLY 32 megs of memory on this thing for your MP3s, if you actually read the specs on it there's an SD expansion slot on the unit. For those who don't know what THAT means: as much memory as you want to buy.
Ok, I had a couple ideas for cutting down on annoying cell usage. In areas like theaters, restaurants, whatever where owners want no cell phone usage, make it so they can buy some kind of area jammer. Ok so the argument against that is, what happens if I'm a doctor on call and I get an emergency call/page (or something to that effect). Well, section off a portion of the cell frequencies for emergency uses like that. Hospitals (in this case) would provide phones that operate on those frequencies to staff who are on-call. Does anyone have any ideas how hard this is to implement? I agree something needs to be done, but I don't think electroshock therapy is the solution.
Well, I look at it this way. Like or not, Apple has a very distinctive style that differentiates it from other computer platforms both visually and ergonomically. I'm talking about hardware AND software. It's a part of the company really. Microsoft isn't synonymous with the designs of the hardware their OS's run on, but Apple micromanages the whole package. It's a part of their identity, in effect an extension of their logo as well as their IP. I can't say I blame them for being as agressive as possible in defending it.
Well technically Apple's supposed to be releasing this feature for their software anyway. So, while they may be cutting your legs off now, they'll probably sell you a new pair down the road.:)
Gee, could the RIAA have hired these guys to spew crap like this? I'm so scared. I should rush to remove any p2p software from my system now just in case. Chances are this is all crap to get people freaked out about using p2p nets.
"Things to watch out for on your way home from work tonight, a stalled car in the right hand lane of highway 2. There's also a fender bender downtown near 58th street. Road crews are busy repairing... "
I see some posts so far about how these people are committing breaking and entering when they hack a site. I guess that floats, but what about deep linking? Am I trespassing? If I look at the source code on a site and learn from it, am I stealing intellectual property? Saving a picture to disk, theft? It's in my cache already, uh oh.
Totally. It's like NDA on IP coming from say a web development project. If I learn something new I can't use it later on other projects? Give me a break. Sure, pure copy and paste of source in that case is bad, but to try to put my knowledge in a cage is retarded.
Since when does being open source mean that everything's free? Or that you're entitled to get everything for free? Redhat has commercial services they charge for, same with MySQL. What's the difference? Sure charging for documentation may not be the most warm and fuzzy thing in the world, but that's their decision and right. You don't have to use their software, and I'm sure there's a lot of other places to go for support (Google and Google Groups, as examples).
Why in hell did they get Baird to do this one? Frakes did a pretty bang up job with First Contact. Insurrection, was relatively watchable to me at least, being not THE worst film in the series. I think Nemesis would have been a great opportunity for Frakes to refine himself as a Trek director, learning from mistakes of Insurrection and building on what he did well with First Contact.
Instead we get the guy who directed US Marshals, a movie which had very forgettable direction at BEST. And people are wondering why this one came together badly? People complain about the plot. Well, Frakes took the old overused Trek staple of TIME TRAVEL and managed to turn it into a real gem of a film. I'm sure he could have put an interesting spin on this one.
Anyway, I'll still check this out in the theaters for the whole experience, for better or worse.
This is more than a little offtopic, but do these people come down to do their business or do they just hang their asses over the branch and let loose on the unsuspecting below?
I think this could be an extremely important invention. This might be a GREAT way to process recyclable materials, as well as other garbage. Imagine the day when the junk we've previously thrown into landfills is instead tossed into a giant version of these things, broken down into potentially reusable materials. Might be a better solution than just digging holes and burying the crap.
Would it be worthwhile to get the source code for OS/2? Could there be anything in there that could be cannibalized for other alternative operating systems?
People didn't complain about the sci-fi ness of Gattaca. Sure the White House didn't get destroyed by a 20 mile wide alien spaceship, but it had a really fucking great story and excellent acting. *gasp* Yes, that can happen in sci-fi movies. Unfortunately it's rare.
The psychology of buying decisions has been researched from a million different angles for as long as things have been bought and sold. Sure this is a little more invasive look into our noggins to see what makes us buy stuff, but how is it any different than say stuffing a room filled with prototype toys with a couple dozen young kids to see which ones are going to be holiday hits? Don't tell me a bunch of psychologists and marketing dweebs with clipboards behind a one way mirror is any more cold and clinical than sticking someone's head in a machine for an MRI.
Heh, yeah it seems like there was maybe like two articles today that weren't dupes (at least with my current story filters set, which aren't that extensive). Looks like the/. staff all took their retard pills this morning.:)
Oh I totally agree. I'm all for OSS getting an equal share of the limelight with others, even Microsoft. Personally I think on an even playing field, OSS has way more pros than cons as opposed to more proprietary solutions. However the OSS community also has to realize that all they can do is showcase themselves as best they can. If an individual/company/organization/whatever decides they want Microsoft products (as an example) then that's their decision. Hopefully they've made an informed one, but if they have then they've chosen what's best for them. OSS shouldn't take that as a slap to the face, they don't have to win EVERY battle.
... for some reason. Some of his books, Johnny Mnemonic most notably I think, have gangs that surgically alter their faces to look like animals. For example, there was one gang that had massive fangs "installed", along with complete alternations to facial bone structure and skin. Kind of weird, hearing (the second time) about this story on Slashdot, I'm wondering if we'll ever reach the point where these kinds of alterations will get cheap enough that they could be used as Gibson wrote about.
Before looking at high taxes, it might be worthy to look at how much of taxes goes towards massive military expenditures as opposed to the others you listed in your post. The space program costs start to look like a drop in the bucket then.

Monopoly has NOTHING to do with this whatsoever. If you violate anyone's license you agreed to, don't be surprised if someone give you the smackdown.
Had I any mod points left you'd get +1 for that one :) Too true.

I wonder if the girl Tx is anatomically correct. Because if I'm going to be terminated, that's the way I wanna go. Oh yeah.

Anyone know of a non-RealMedia version of this? I don't want to have to install that slimy piece of worm-ridden filth on my system.

How can open source groups give a nonbiased pitch of their products/ideals/whatever? The door swings both ways.
