If I had mod points I'd mod you up. You hit it right no the head with this. There's still TONS of games being made for the current gen, and a humongous back library for each platform. With expensive, hard-to-find hardware, overpriced crummy software, is there even a real reason to take the plunge yet other than for the sake of early adoption?
Ah, but a huge difference between WC3 and cutscenes today is that with WC3 and 4 (and later, Prophecy) was that those games were designed from the start as interactive movies with the gameplay being in the cockpit. The story was good, and the cutscenes were like watching a good sci-fi, but you could do a bit of "choose your own adventure" stuff. The problem was that it was very linear overall.
Then again, maybe there's a reason there aren't any games like Wing Commander made today. The last best sci-fi flight sim like that was Descent Freespace 1 and 2, and those had next to nothing in the way of cutscenes.
Call me strange, but I don't care what age group a game is targeted for, as long as it's a good game then it will be worth buying. I've got games that run the entire spectrum of ratings and subject matters in my colletion.
Actually that's not entirely accurate. The intent of the iMac G5's interior design was to allow the user to upgrade any part of the hardware, from the RAM to the screen if necessary.
Anyone got a side-by-side comparison between this and the G5 iMac innards? This new one's definitely lacking in the interior design department. I mean I know it's basically a PC now, but...
Anyway, maybe it's a nitpicky point, but just something that occurred to me when I saw the pictures.
If anything it was a nice modification of the counter's casing. Frankly, it might have been easier just to fabricate something from scratch given the amount of modding work required to get it to look like the end result.
But who am I tell tell someone how to use their own personal time.:)
I've played a LOT of MMOs, and I have to say that the only reason one is ever going to be able to RP properly is to find an RP guild to play with. At least those specific interactions can be reasonably guaranteed to be RP. Otherwise you're at the mercy of playing with everyone else out there, the vast majority of which do not want to RP.
A friend of mine and I went through several different sites which reviewed the launch titles, and could NOT figure out any kind of logic that would indicate how they came up with their final scores.
Everyone marked games well with scores well over 75% across the board (or perfect, as in the cased of the idiotic 1up), yet also had a lot of negative things to say. The gameplay was too short. The graphics weren't all that next-gen or looked too plastic. The AI sucked. The online play was horrible and buggy. The framerate chugged frequently.
So why mark a game over 85% if a similar game on the current generation gets a much worse percentage with the same gripes? What little faith we had left in gaming journalism was all but whittled away by the time we finished chatting about what we'd seen.
Because if he didn't, then you'd never think the others were at risk. Suddenly you thought, holy frack, is he going to kill them all off? Brilliance.
Back to the topic, we SHOULD be hard on these guys, especially Rockstar. Yes they've done some amazing things, but they can easily fall into the trap of doing more of the same. GTA3 was amazing, but were the subsequent games really all that much different than the first? Not really. LCS is on the PSP so it's portable (yay!), but will LCS on the PS2 (announced) be a must buy?
At the same time, I respect all the parties out there. Sony for getting the industry to where it's at today and for pushing the envelope with the PS3. Microsoft for making Live the compelling feature that's made the XBox worth buying. Nintendo for having the guts to try something different.
I'm hoping they all win this go around, and we lose none. Because if one falls, I fear a huge part of the industry will be affected no matter who it is.
That's why I'm critical of the games that are coming out. Software developers and publishers need to wake up and realize that there's more than just their own bottom lines at risk when they churn out the same old same old.
Starcraft: Ghost - A stealthy shooter. Real revolutionary.
Middle Earth Online - Another fantasy MMO.
Black - Another first person shooter.
Bully - Controversial beat-em-up from who else? Rockstar
Okami - I'll give you that, this game looks wild.
Winback 2 - Never heard of Winback 1, to be honest.
Star Wars Empire at War - Ever played the first Star Wars strategy game? Truly horrific. And this isn't groundbreaking at all.
So far it's not looking so pretty, and as you say this is from now until May.
Disappointing, but not a big surprise anyway

No PS3 Surprises at CES

... since Sony told everyone last year at E3 that it was going to go quiet while it went off and finished the console. They didn't ever state at any point that they'd do announcements at CES, or even this year's E3 for that matter.
It's a fairly good bet, I'd imagine, that something will be shown off at E3 given the amount of floor space they've reserved. But who knows.
Oddly enough it does. I saw a video somewhere that shows that the keyboard can rotate all the way around so lefties can use it just as well as righties.
Your 600+ DVDs didn't just become obsolete. They're perfectly playable on a HD-DVD player. I for one have at least 200 DVDs kicking around, and there's no way in hell I'm going to be replacing them all with HD equivalents.
DVDs right now look fantastic, and the only ones I could see replacing with newer high def ones would be ones that came out when DVDs first hit the market that don't have the best transfer (such as Heat, for example), and larger epic films that would benefit from the upgrade (Lord of the Rings, etc).
It's like Gamerankings.com, basically lists combined ratings of other reviews out there and lets you click off to read any of them. And, like Gamerankings, puts a dumb bar at the top of the screen to remind you what site you really came from. The submitter didn't bother to just cut and paste the URL to the article itself.
Not entirely a prediction, I think we're seeing the beginnings of it already with the 360 and the holiday season being down from last year. I think with all the wait-and-see types out there not buying games for current generation systems in favor of next-gen ones, we're in for some tough times.
I think this effect will become more apparent as we lead get through the first half of 06.
Agreed. It gets so stupid that I turn off plugins in Safari on my Mac. Some pages are so clogged with Flashads that it just wails on the CPU.

Damn, should have been plain text formatted, sorry.

.. a couple of things.
1. This is an initial list only, who knows what will come out during the launch period.
2. This is probably going to be for the Japan release only, and is most likely not indicative of the North American launch lineup
Yeah, that would suck. *cymbal crash*

Before then, though, buying a PS3 gets you bragging rights and little else.
This has been what's kept early adopters going for years, and is probably not going to change anytime soon.

All I understand is that people were able to write papers before Wikipedia, Google, and the internet.

Look no further than the XBox 360.

Why not have a deformable body? Flatten it out so it can travel at higher speeds, then whe it slows down, puff it up and it can be more blimpy.

If any game deserves a modern sequel or even a remake, it's Syndicate. Hell, imagine if it were to be made into an MMO?

Not sure. Depends on how many 360s people found at Best Buy this morning.
