Most of those gamer magazines have 90% advertising ads in them and takes like 5 minutes to read anything worth while. Most of the time when I pull some of them out of the mail box and start reading/walking back to the house, I am done by the time I hit the door and it's in the the recycling bin.
And that which is not advertising is either previews that do nothing but hype upcoming games as The Best Ever Game That We've Ever Seen or reviews that then tear down said Best Ever Game upon it's release. I'd love to see game reviews that didn't rely on a PR releases, but I doubt that'll ever happen.
Or of course we could always use something that at least reduces the amount of energy that must be held as fuel, for example using a few miles of track and a sled as the first stage.
Which comes with g-forces that would squish any astronaut into the consistency of strawberry jam.
Like it or not, until we get a beanstalk up and running, we're stuck with chemical rockets for a while when it comes to manned missions.
IIRC, NASA used the terrain around Ajo as testing grounds for the first lunar missions.
I've been to Ajo, I spent a week there one day. It's a perfect location for simulate the moon; rugged, desolate, and devoid of any signs of human habitation.
I live inside the "Constitution Free Zone" and I have the legal right to carry a firearm. I guess that must not be part of the Constitution in the ACLU's world...
And did they round that number up or down in the final result?
Man, that would suck to be the civilization left out because of rounding. "Gosh darn it all, you guys are smart and all that, but numbers don't lie: You're just not advanced."
Of course, it would suck for the rest of us to have a non-intelligent lifeform (like, say, Steelers fans...) added to the list because they rounded up.
Do I really need another streaming web video site that doesn't work with all the other streaming video sites out there, and one that's limited to streaming-only?
To it's credit, it is compatible with my TiVo. But if I want to watch, oh, say, Batman, The Animated Series, I'll set up a Season Pass for it and get it for free, rather than pay 2 bucks per episode.
Well, my Civic Hybrid looks just like a regular Civic.
Whether or not that's fugly is a matter for debate, though.
What gets me is that for 15 years, I was a light-truck guy (Nissans), and there are no hybrid light trucks. Zero. Zilch. Zip. Nada.
I'd love to see a compact truck (smaller than either Nissan's current Frontier or the Tacoma) with a hybrid motor that can handle everyday use. I'd be first in line to buy one when they come out.
I know. How strange is it that they think that the largest source of heat in the entire solar system would have ANYTHING to do with one of the planets getting warmer...
"So, if I Understand this correctly, you knew of these security holes back in 2008, and rather than fix them, you prevented the Mythbusters from talking about them."
"Well, yes, Your Honor."
"Give me another reason why I should listen to one word of your defense against this class action suit?"
This will come back and bite them in the @$$. Hard.
Is Blu-ray faster? No. It takes longer to load a disc and get a movie up and running than DVD does.
Is it cheaper? Oh. Heck. No.
Is it better quality? Yes.
Sorry, that just doesn't cut it. Amazon Unbox and Tivo or AppleTV or um, er, ah "other methods" (coughcoughPIRATEBAYcoughcough) are faster and cheaper and sometimes better.
Any physical media will lose when facing that competition.
Look, does this news really come as a surprise? NASA's been over-budget and behind schedule since the last Apollo flight. Without the unlimited checkbook that Mercury/Gemini/Apollo had, this should be expected.
Unlimited budgets have a way of clearing all obstacles in their path.
As owners of new Mercedes can't find places to fill up their cars.
Look, I'm all for alternative power sources, (I've been driving a Honda Civic hybrid since 2004), but a unilateral decision like this is just silly. Mercedes just isn't a big enough player (even in Europe) to force the construction of the infrastructure needed to support common use of fuel cells, etc. by 2015.
And don't biofuels lead to worldwide food shortages? A better route for Mercedes would be to ease the transition with regular hybrids and plug-in hybrids, then take the leap into leaving gasoline and diesel.
Me? When I sell my Civic Hybrid in a few years (like, say, six or so), I'll probably get a Chevy Volt. 40 miles on batteries only = never having to use gas on my way or going home from work.
My four year old is bored silly by most of the stuff on The Science Channel. But he loves Mythbusters and Master Blasters, as do I. I had Mr. Wizard growing up, he has Mythbusters, and anyone who thinks that Mr. Wizard's audience was just kids needs to check themselves.
There is a time for everything under the sun, and sometimes you want to watch someone explain the mysteries of the billy-uns and billy-uns of stars out there, and sometimes you want to see someone blow s*** up (for a purpose).
As for books, Jerry Pournelle's "A Step Farther Out" left a profound impression on me when I was but a lad, and continues to do so to this. Enough of this gloom and doom s***: It's raining soup out there, let's grab some buckets and go get it!
Well-said. Anyone who thinks theirs is the only right and true and just cause, free from the stain of human fallibility, is setting themselves up for one heck of a fall. A better oath might go "I pledge to adjust my conclusions to fit the data, not the other way around, even when my funding's on the line."
I doubt we'll have a stampede of scientists willing to follow that oath, though.
Good science has *always* rocked the boat, forcing us to look at our world in new ways. It's not a weapon to be used against corporations/government/whoever you think your enemyis: The truth that good science reveals quite often comes back to bite you on your a**, forcing you to change as much as anyone else.

Bloom County. The Far Side. Calvin & Hobbes.
And Zippy the Pinhead for those into, ah, more chemically-induced forms of humor.
But now we have web comics. And the golden age of comic strips is with us once again.
The comic strip is dead. Long live the comic strip.
an article on why websites crash when slashdot links to them.
Don't eat it, then!
Or did they mean it's not good for tuberculosis?
Everybody knows that GoBots are better than Transformers.
And then let the ships circle around the edge of the Pacific ocean, picking up IT workers along the way to drop off in America.
Hmmmmn...
Where have I heard that before?
