Bad load times on your Powerbook? I first got it for my Performa 6400 with 200 Mhz 603e. It definitely left me twiddling my thumbs a lot. I didn't get into it as much as my brother did, though. Come to think of it, he paid for it.
Technology? Perhaps, but is it fun? That's what's important, or darn well should be, and that's where id has almost always failed with me. I am prepared for them to prove me wrong, when the sucker ships.
I've long considered pagers and cell phones to be the human version of radio-tagging wild animals. Now that you're marked, we can find you again.
Seriously, I don't pick up most of my calls at home, and I don't get calls anywhere else, and that's how I like it. If you are not related to me and you want to reach me, email me. As it is, I get far more spam/telemarketers on the phone than in the email.
Speaking from a Mac user's perspective, the Toshiba player isn't too useful. USB2 is only available on the Mac to tower users who spend extra money, and I saw no mention of Mac software anyway. The removable hard drives are a long term advantage, not a short term one.
Myself, my iPod just arrived in the main today, so I've put my money where my mouth is. I'm off to work with it now!:-)
One other note on IE installation. Since the installer replaced the older version of IE that came with MacOS X, it seems to have inherited the permissions of the older version. That is, it's owned by the system, and I can't get rid of it now without enabling root access.
Almost seems like Microsoft is going for the "It's part of the OS" argument again.;-)
It looks better than it did, and has fewer rendering problems, but it still seemed dog slow(compared to OmniWeb, Mozilla, AND IE for 9.x). Also, I quickly found a page that didn't load more than a third of the way, and needed a Reload to get the rest of it. I'll keep it, but it's not going on my dock. I've got two other browsers there already.
I had a Performa 6400 with a floppy drive within the last 3 years, but it only collected dust. About all it got used for was reinstalling old games that shipped on floppies, like F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 or Wolfenstein 3D(the latter had a problem on one of the diskettes, so I couldn't reinstall it).
Perhaps, but that doesn't apply to my new job. I'm processing forms for free drugs for low income patients with serious ailments, like diabetes, or Hepatitis C. I'd say that this makes for above average job satisfaction.
A side effect(so to speak) of Biotech field is the pharmaceutical industry. I just started work with Express Scripts this month, and I love the people, the pay, and the work environment. I'm part of the new and growing second shift data entry crew, but I'm sure that they could use coders as well. They're really growing. Everyone needs their prescriptions filled, especially with the country getting older, and ES is(according to them) providing one out of every six Americans with their prescriptions.
No, they didn't ask me to say this; I'm off on Fridays and Saturdays.
A little off-topic, but I have a question about the popup-killing. There's a certain site that I visit with Mozilla that always gives me two pop-behind windows when I visit. I can't find anything under Preferences to change that. Any ideas? I never get unwanted popups in OmniWeb, but this particular site doesn't work in OmniWeb.
Spied on? What, there's a Blizzard van sitting outside your house every day? They're tapping your phones?
Oh, is this something about Battle.net? You don't like them monitoring your games? Well, you could stay off of Battle.net. I've never been on Battle.net with any Warcraft or Starcraft game, and haven't spent much time on with the Diablo series, because other players are idiots at best and hacker player killers at worst.
id may be technically proficient, and make some good game engines, they've not made a game I've enjoyed playing since before Doom. In my opinion, of course.
Not that I've enjoyed all of Blizzard's games; Warcraft 1, 2, and Starcraft were each fun initially, but quickly got too tough for me in the single player games. I've loved the Diablo series, though, and have high hopes for the fun factor in Warcraft III.
I happen to agree with you, though I'd never heard of bnetd until you guys started griping about the lawsuit. But then I do the vast majority of gaming offline anyway, because most of the online gaming I've done with strangers has been, shall we say, unrewarding.
The hardware requirements are a touch high for me(my iMac is over two and a half years old), so I'll let my brother buy it, then borrow(not pirate!) the CD's for an hour or so of testing. Though he might have trouble himself with that Voodoo3 card..
That's a nice theory, but it's never worked in the past. Mac users begged for UnrealEd for a long time without success. About the only editors that have made it to the Mac are StarEdit for Starcraft and the one with Heroes of Might & Magic II.(not III) Oh, and the Myth and Marathon editors, of course.
That was something that worried me. Yoda and Jace Windu sitting right in front of Palpatine, and never sensing any deception or dark force power from him. If Palpatine can hide in plain sight from the top Jedi masters, what else can he do?
I checked it from a Windows NT box at work the other day, no problem. On the other hand, I'm blocked from MacGamer.com and Insidemacgames.com, while my coworkers have no problem playing games on shockwave.com. Strange priorities, can play games at work, but can't read about them.
iTunes is the worst? In what way? Speed? It's fast enough for my purposes on a 400 Mhz G3. Quality? Nothing I've ever ripped has had a flaw, and sound quality is great. I'll admit that I've not used other programs for ripping, other than iTunes's predecessor SoundJam, but I'm wondering how other programs could be better.
I never thought of Macs as being overpriced, because I've long sworn off machines with Windows as being worthless to me. Even in the days of Windows 3.1, I greatly preferred DOS. Later, I still say that I wouldn't accept a Windows PC as a gift, so any price is overpriced. But that's just my humble opinion.
No one's opening up my iMac for the hard drive without printed instructions from MacFixIt.com or another Mac tech site, and it'll take them 10-15 minutes. Heck, I replaced my hard drive, and I couldn't do it again without instructions.
Are you sure yours is a Rev/A? I know some people personally who have shown me the 'Rev/A' that they own, but after a couple of quick questions, it turns out to be a Rev/B. Of course, a CPU upgrade may also have an effect, though exactly what I wouldn't know.
My own iMac DV doesn't seem any faster or slower with the new update, save for the faster iDisk, which I rarely access anyway. But I wasn't complaining about my speed in the first place.
A minor correction: It's the Rev/B through Rev/D iMacs that use the Rage Pro. The Rev/A has a Rage II with 2MB video memory. It never was suited to any sort of 3D acceleration.

Thanks, AC. I just didn't see where under Advanced to find the options. Too bad they're not enabled by default.

I'm sure a $400 self-built computer would be semi-usable. So's a Yugo, if you want a cheap car, but I wouldn't want to own one.
Of course, I've said for over 5 years that if it doesn't run the MacOS, I wouldn't want to own it at any price, including free.

Whew! I did NOT need to see that! Time for some coffee to quell my stomach.
Well, there's always those rare guys like me that don't like beer... ;-)
