I switched to IE7 a week ago after Vista RTMd. I don't miss FF. I've also been running without anti-virus for the entire week. I ran a system virus scan today and ZILCH - no viruses. No spyware or adware either.
It might have to do with the fact that my machine isn't connected to a network...
Jensen Harris, the lead program manager for the Office user experience, blogged about this change on July 24. He even has videos. His blog is a very comprehensive journal that describes the evolution of the Office 2007 UI, including decisions that went into building the Ribbon.
Warning: jensenh is a good writer, probably on par with Joel Spolsky, so be prepared to spend hours reading through his archives.
I'd say that credibility about your past experience is the key. I have an undergrad degree in CS with four years of real industry experience. I consciously chose to spend the time working at two small companies (less than 70 people each) which were struggling to reinvent their business model. Enter me, who knew how to make Java and.NET sing because I followed the emerging trends while I was in school. At both places, I designed and implemented solutions that significantly increased revenues and stabilized their systems. In short, I worked in the dev and solutions architect role. I reported to the CEOs in both jobs. Yes, I wasn't paid too much, and the fact that I didn't have student loans to worry about helped me. But, I ended up with a tremendous amount of real-life experience and goodwill from my colleagues and bosses.
Now, I'm working at a rapidly growing mid-size financial company and my title is Solutions Architect. I'm paid over $150K and I don't have to work more than 6 hours a day. During my interview, the hiring manager had concerns about the many projects I had on my resume. But after a 20 minute walkthrough, he knew that I knew what I was talking about. I did want to go back to school and do an MS full-time, but I did the math and the opportunity cost isn't worth it financially. I'm also not interested in getting a Ph.D. and the subsequent job at Google and I've already enjoyed my share of frat parties:)
Have you glanced at Windows XP x64 or Windows 2003 Server x64? How about the Windows CE or Windows Mobile family? Lotsa links in the Microsoft Windows page.
If the source code was open source|freely available, the Linux community would be glad to fix any bugs arising within the human body... how dare you ask us for $$$?
You know those demented motorists who drive at 40mph in the fast lane on the interstate? I was looking for a way to get back at those pseudo-maniacs. I found a cute LED display (BetaBrite) in Sams. Picked one up, googled a bit and found the protocol. Put together a Java program to interface with the LED sign through RS-232. Placed it at the rear window/windshield, plugged it into my cigarette lighter socket and connected it to my laptop. Stored a few choice messages into the sign's memory.
Now, depending on the situation, I display the appropriate message on the sign. It's fun to see the looks on people's faces! Good to know that if you are a geek, you don't have to take road-abuse.
I used to drink at least 6 cans of Pepsi a day. One fine day in September, I decided I had enough of caffeine and soda so I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to stop consuming it. I knew it all depended on my will power and I was determined to make it work. I spent the next 4 days with a terrible headache. I compensated by drinking lots and lots of water and running five miles a day. Then the headache went away. I haven't consumed any caffeine-laced products since then. My experience is that if you have the will power you can do anything.
Do you have a writeup somewhere for the rest of us? It seems freakishly cool (is there a word for that?) to get CE running on a desktop. Just interested.
I think most Americans are quite informed, knowledgeable about our history and that of the world.
How many Americans do you know could spot where Brunei is on a map? I ask you because you post on slashdot so you must be fairly up the IQ scale. The only history Americans know is Civil War & First President. Ask them about the Great Depression: D'oh, didn't that happen when the space shuttle ran out of oxygen? Don't even remember that America is a nation of immigrants and the first white settlers sailed over from an intolerant England.
Having the UN "intervene" to teach Americans our place in the world?
Oh yeah? And now justify America wanting to replace a sovereign government with a puppet "democracy" in Iraq. What right does America have to interfere there?

I know an UN inspector who found Uranus...
And "I got pressure, you got pressure" from the Bus Uncle.
Do Larry and Sergey always dress in #000000?
Get over it. There's a reason the latest Vista release is in "Beta".

Joi Ito's blog clearly mentions that Microsoft's Michael Kaplan posted the information first. So, why does the post say "Joi Ito reports..."?
Welcome to /. where hordes of informed geeks post only intellectual arguments and rejoinders.
Microsoftie Chen's analysis, slashdotted a while ago, has pictures too!

Why buy beer at all? Save the money and buy another hard disk.

doesn't that describe Windows? I'll be glad to get a 4-hour uninterrupted uptime any day of the week...
Really? I was new here before you :)
...just like my new hard disk has 160 GB space available. What next, PI = 3?
In the hope that someone is still reading this thread, I'm making a contribution to terminology:
Poor jokes are of two types: - the poor jokes represented as pjs - the complex poor jokes meant for the intelligentsia. These get termed as p+ijs.
For those who came in late, a complex number has the general form a+ib. Go figure.
That wasn't a race, bud - that was merely the sneak preview! ;)
