    I agree completely.

Personally, I always knew the statistic was only compared to the box office, not the whole movie industry, but either way... video games are BIG MONEY.

Anyway you spin it, the game industry is huge and growing fast.

On what basis do you ground that hypothosis?

All versions of VC#.NET require the .NET framework be loaded, but 2002 takes nearly a minute to load where as the 2005 beta loads in less than 3 seconds on my machine. .NET does incur some startup cost (the CLR needs to be initalized) and code needs to be JITed, but this should hardly take 20 seconds!

There are full featured high performance 3D engines written with .NET, let's have no more FUD about .NET's performance!

The startup sequence is probably just poorly optimized.

Three of my friends at college have made the switch to OSX over this past summer. One of them told me that the iPod was his "gateway drug" to becoming a Mac user. The other two quickly agreed that they became converts in a similar way. One saw an OSX demo in the Apple section of a Comp USA while buying an iPod and the other was introduced to Macs when asking a friend about his Mac and iPod before buying one.

Seeing as none of them are particuarly computer literate, I've helped a few of them with various applications. As a result I have become a proponent of Macs for technically-challeneged people. They are in a technological bliss I have never seen with the average casual user.

Instead of continuing the Linux crusade, I suggest techies push OSX on people. It will be an easier switch and will eventually help everyones anti-Microsoft cause. In the end it will even help Linux because software will be built with Windows/Unix cross platformity in mind.

Halo has got that lil special magical something that makes it super fun.

I personally am a big PC FPS fan and was skeptical of Halo 1 when watching some friends play. When they let me play I realized why they couldn't stop. There is just something about it... its fun.

The single player campaign of Halo 1 was rather lackluster in my opinion, but the multiplayer is just non stop brilliance. The multiplayer is perfectly balanced, easy to pickup and play, fast paced, and just plain fun.

The controls are finely tuned and responsive which creates a breed of shooter completely unlike a PC FPS. I have never heard a Halo player ever blaim the game or the controller, and here at school I PLAY A LOT OF HALO...

I can understand why some people just dont "get" Halo, it seemingly makes no sense. There are some obviously cool features such as the sheild/health and plasma/bullet system as well as easy access grenedes and melee, but these are nothing revolutionary. The fun is in the perfect blend of everything that needs to be experianced to believe.

  14. Re:Archos on How to Get Music Off Your iPod · · Score: 1

    I agree!

I own a Archos Jukebox 10 and an Archos Gemini 220.

The Jukebox is dated, but the Gemini is superior to the iPod in every way except the cool factor and user interface (which is still quite usable). If you you use WinAmp, WMP, or iTunes to create your playlists, you can bypass having to actually use the interface extensively. I would recommend doing that to iPod users anyway.

Visit www.archos.com and check it out. The Gemini lets you catalog, search, and play MP3s, Wavs, and WMAs (although it chokes on variable bitrate WMAs, but supposibly that has since been fixed with a firmware upgrade that I have yet to check out). It also doubles as a standard FAT32 hard drive and is about half the height of (but slightly thicker than) an iPod.

My only complaint would be that it only comes with a sync driver for Music Match, but it is just so easy to copy your music folder over to the hard drive using Windows (or any OS capable of reading FAT32 drives for that matter). If you choose to not overwrite, it is almost identical to "sync"ing. Personally, I use folder comparison program to accomplish syncing.

  25. Re:Spammers on GMail on Gmail Begins Signing Email with DomainKeys · · Score: 3, Insightful

"So will this prevent spammers from sending spams via a Gmail account?
I doubt that's really the concern, most spammers don't use mainstream ISPs/E-mail providers as it is, they just fake return addresses from domains of known ISPS/E-mail providers"

I would think the really important thing about this is that Google is respected in the internet industry and that others will certainly follow suit. If enough big players make the effort to ensure email from their domain names is authenticated, email clients could eventually offer the option to only accept emails from proven senders.
