    If you think about it, dogs are basically just interrupt handlers with the ability to respond to a few simple commands.

    I guess we've more or less lost programming of that kind, even things like mobile and thin-client devices these days run higher-end language platforms like Java.

    Languages like Java and C# are chosen for speed of development, which is especially important in the fast-changing market of mobile devices. You don't want to be dinking around with registers while your competitors are releasing completed products.

    Better yet, confiscate the profits from spamming activities and use that to pay them. We need to introduce disincentives. Having some big company pick up the tab just subsidizes the spammers.

    dnscache keeps copious logs as well. You'll want to filter out most stuff on production machines, but it's handy for troubleshooting.

    A simple NAT device also allows you to download security patches for fresh OS installs without getting infected in the process. This is especially handy for unsophisticated users who would have trouble making a patch CD.
