Hacking an OS is "easier" in the sense that there are lots of more entries for a hacker to jump into, so let's see what happens. Of course if no one uses the OS, it will be harder as there is no interest.

I have a third gen i5, and wanted to upgrade but seeing benchmarks i may get only up to 15% of speed increases. Today you get a much better upgrade by getting an SSD drive and a new GPU.

I have a nvidia gtx 970, excellent card, silent, no issues. It was a little expensive (330$) but nobody could deliver a faster product at that price.

I wanted to upgrade to the 1070, but since i game at 1080p i couldn't justify the (more expensive 450$) cost.

Yes i have. Running ubuntu 16.04 at home. Go search for benchmarks: the only linux games that have decent, nearly native windows speed are those based on the Source engine, which surprise surprise, Valve makes.

Try any other game and you will see the frame rate drops quite heavily. And this is with the nvidia binary driver, which is very good.

The latest example is Deus Ex Mankind Divided.

Sure, you can say "this isn't Linux's fault, rather it's the developer who makes shoddy unoptimized ports" and you would be right, but the end user won't care who is at fault.

get bluescreenview and post in some microsoft forums. they have some great gurus that will pinpoint what's causing your bsod. i'm both a windows and linux user and these days windows is a lot more stable than linux is. the nature of open source is that there are lots of small pieces made by lots of people with no integration/cohesion of any kind.

I have had grave bugs even on enterprise distros (such as virt-manager crashing on a fully updated centos 7 install) and other bugs easily catched in QA such as nouveau showing no video on ubuntu 16.10 (but working fine on 16.04)

I wouldn't recommend linux unless it's for server use. If you want to game, use Windows. Even linux games on steam are 30-50% slower than on Windows

  11. I am a customer of Kaspersky Endpoint Security (the antivirus version for business). For the past 3 years, Kaspersky has never had an antivirus product compatible for the latest Windows version upon release. Windows 10 correctly disabled Kaspersky upon install. I don't know if the claim about disabling even compatible versions is true.

They never even had betas before release. We had to wait nearly a year for a compatible version with Windows 8.1 and several months for Windows 10.

In my opinion, they seem understaffed

Its sort of concerning that Samsung can just reach out and kill your phone, in effect at their whim.

stop the FUD. samsung won't do anything. The carrier will just flag all Note 7 IMEI's so they won't get service. Quite simple and don't need a backdoor to do that

  15. We have had Starcom certificates because they seem to be the only ones giving out free SSL certificates for websites.

Is there someone else doing this for free? No, we really can't buy them in our country and current situation.

  16. When i got the powerbook (as a gift), i never was tempted by the hardware. I was tempted exclusively for OSX.

The hardware was inferior, no Intel (and today the bundled cpu is not top of the line), smaller screen sizes, no numeric keypad, no second button on trackpads, insane premium price, less RAM than competing laptops. The only decent hardware was the screen resolution itself.

I like having ports and features. I had to give it a serious thought to upgrade to this Lenovo, because it doesn't come with a DVD drive anymore, and doesn't have a fingerprint reader (which is nice and i can tell Apple users like it on their phones).

Also, as you said, Windows reliability has improved much and Microsoft has opened up to Linux enough to make OSX not tempting enough anymore. Sure, dumb start menu, spying and lack of windows update control are troublesome, but they can be worked around.

  17. To add insult to injury, NVIDIA actually makes a great macOS driver. It works even on my non-apple GTX 970 on my PC. My old 2003 Powerbook had a NVIDIA chip. So blame Apple even more.

  18. Get a PC laptop and call it a day. You can even install macOS if you want. The new HP Spectra and Dell XPS are two excellent laptops.

I just bought a cheap refurbished Lenovo laptop, only $435 and has a 1080p screen, skylake processor and a discrete NVIDIA card. You can add a nice 512GB SSD for $120 if you want.

  19. I did not care much about the hinge, and i used it mostly on AC, didn't notice about the battery until the HDD went dead. Also, i bought it in the US and i live in Venezuela, where Apple doesn't operate.

My point is that i think the hardware isn't less prone to failure than PC, and since if it a lot more expensive, it ends up costing more overall

  20. I purchased a 12" 2003 Powerbook. Within a few months, the hinge started to come loose, also it scratched the cover, the battery went dead in just a year, and the HDD went dead in less than two. It costed 1700$ plus tax, never mind that the processor was slower than 700$ PC laptops and included less RAM and HDD space.

I have never had an issue with PC Laptops, everyone has lasted until i got newer versions and sold them.

Why i got the Powerbook in the first place? I wanted to try MacOSX 10.3 Panther, namely because of a nice GUI and a UNIX background.

2 months ago i bought a refurbished Lenovo i7 with 8GB ram, 1TB HDD, 1080p screen and included discrete video card. Only costed 430$

  23. I didn't mean actual boot time. " to boot" is an english expression to highlight some affirmation.

Basically iPhones run app after, either because the app developers optimize them more or because the OS/Platform allows you.

  24. at these prices, seems that after next year when i get the last android OS, i will have to resort to custom roms to get the latest versions. I only upgrade phones to get the latest OS anyway. For my use (texting, calls and some browsing) the 5X will serve me good for a while

  25. Let's see what happens when sales remain flat. Nexus had good prices (except for the nexus 6) with decent hardware. Selling the pixels starting at 649$ seems arrogant at best. For that price most people will choose the iPhone and get a faster phone to boot (1 year old iPhone 6S even beats the Note 7)

I just hope the Nexus program lives on. If android is about choice, we should be able to have a phone with google-provided updates for 350$. I don't want to switch to Samsung, LG, or even custom roms
