...Oh, in addition to playing obsolete musical instruments, he also makes his website with Adobe PageMill.

There's another dead product. (Though it ROCKED! It was a mac program, and was the first GUI WYSISWG HTML editor. Unfortunately, Microsoft killed it.)

I guess HP uses it because HP and Adobe have always been in bed with each other. I suppose HP doesn't like Microsoft either.

In Microsoft's last release of Office, they really raised the bar.

Microsoft Word, in the standard US version, now supports any language. I can flip a little thing that floats in the language bar, and start typing in Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, etc.

While AbiWord has multi-language support, it's MUCH easier for me to use this with Microsoft Word, and it's made me a Word user.

It's a tough problem to solve, and now people entering the market have to have this level of functionality.

    .tv was an Idealab! scam.

They wanted to charge the company I work for a large sum---some 10s of thousands of $$$--to register the .tv domain. (We're a major television network.)

While some execs thought we _have to_ register this before someone else does, ultimately we didn't! We figured if anyone uses that name in any way connected with our operation, we'd sue them for trademark infringement.

The .tv folks have yet to sell it to anyone else either. I think they realized that they, too, may be held accountable for the misuse of our trademarks.

    What about SoftPC?

I'm not kidding here! Ask any Mac zealot about Windows and, after he stops foaming at the mouth, he'll mention that the Mac can run *more* apps than a PeeCee because it can run Mac applications, Linux applications and--with SoftPC--Windows applications.

So long as the Mac community keeps telling people this--and they do--Microsoft has every right to count iMacs.

Of course, if you're going to explot something, you'd want to write an exploit for the most popular version of the software. Like it or not, the Microsoft VM was the most popular.

While I'm not a Java developer (because I'm not a pedophile -- most of you know that Java was developed by admitted pedophile Patrick Naughton to find pictures of little girls on the Internet), I've found that the Microsoft VM was better.

In fact there are TONS of Sun VM security holes.

  11. Re:Two years ahead of the "other guys" on Apple Drops Mac OS 9 · · Score: 2, Interesting
Microsoft esentially did it when Windows XP came out, effectively ending the dual product lines of "NT" based OS and Win95 based OS. Windows 95/98/ME had a lot of Win31 legacy in it that it was time to get rid of.

Unfortunately it's tough to do, especially when it comes to device drivers. Windows 96/98/ME were still able to load 16-bit device drivers, if necessary. There are quite a few people around with strange, old, hardware that they need to run. With Windows ME, Microsoft introducted a compatible device driver model so people could write drivers for 98/ME and XP with a single code base.

It was worth it for Microsoft, and it will be worth it for Apple. OS 9 has a great deal of "legacy" code in it that bogs it down. Let's hope they can make the transition as smoothly as Apple did. (Please, Apple zealots, don't mod me down just because I didn't say that Bill Gates was satan in this post.)
