I think this is the first time they've called it "AltiVec(R)". Previously they were refering to it as a vector processing unit, or something of that nature.
There have been a lot of anecdotal posts like this about the merits of SCSI over ATA. I'd like to see some real benchmarks soon for RAID arrays with these disks and find out the truth.
however as a Newton owner I think that the some-what-larger-than-Palm device size that the Newton line sported is much more user friendly and usable.
The reason the Palm became popular was it was first out with the correct form factor. You couldn't carry a Newton in your pocket, so the appeal was very limited. If Newton had been the size of a Palm, it would have become popular. Palm's licensing of the OS also had an effect, but it was the convenience of the size that made it take off.
Agreed. I think that $600 would be a powerful price point for apple, and sans monitor it should be doable.
Here's why it's a valid Slashdot article.

DirectX 9 Finally Out

DirectX has no reason to exist other that the hope that Microsoft has that they can pull so far ahead of an open standard, such as OpenGL, that games will look their best (or better yet for Microsoft, will only work at all) on Winx86. This is Slashdot news because a) it's a threat to open standards b) it's still interesting tech despite ill intent of it's conception and c) Slashdot is not a Linux site.
From Microsofts's site:
"Microsoft and MPEG-4
Many companies have contributed to the development of MPEG-4. Microsoft has also been a supporter of this development process for some time, particularly in the video area. Microsoft has made more than 100 formal contributions to the MPEG-4 standardization process and has patents that are relevant to MPEG-4 video implementations.
While Microsoft continues to support the MPEG-4 standardization process, it is moving forward with the development of audio and video technologies that deliver superior quality and an end-to-end streaming solution for Microsoft customers."
I don't think WMP supports MPEG-4 currently. Microsoft doesn't like open standards, as illustrated in the previous paragraph.
There was only one way to watch this.

Agreed. The Chimera project has turned a corner in a big way since 0.5. It is as solid as IE now, renders better and is much faster. I predict no other browser will hold a candle to it by 1.0. By that I mean on any platform.
Microsoft could throw money down a hole for a long, long time. Their other divisions are so profitable, that they can afford to try to break into a whole lot of markets without it affecting their bottom line too negatively.
Taco, you won't think is overhyped when you're 85 years old and using a similar, but smaller device to keep up with your grandkids on walks to the park.

Dude, Macs have a new operating system now. Your post sound like it's from 1996.

Not only didn't you read the article, you didn't read the post.

He wrote Mosaic and co-founded one of the most innovative companies of the decade. What have you done, you jerk?
It might have been nice to offer to save the lady's data before blowing it away. (Maybe she left too quickly...)
Duh? Duh!

Not the bands I go see in New York. They sound great live. And the other bands that perform on SNL usually sound great, too.
Did anyone hear them on SNL? They sound like a mediocre college band.

Yeah, but imagine a Beowulf cluster of Beowulf cluster jokes.
While HP may be EOLing the Alpha in their products, namely Tru64 UNIX, it's Intel that owns and is killing the Alpha, no?

How about "Internet Browsing Masterpiece"? Call it IBM for short.

Was that the Sea of Tranquility?
Neither of you passed 7th grade grammar. THAN is used in a comparison, THEN is related to time. If you're wondering, yes, I'm a dick.
Go get 0.6. It's much better.
