    A lot of Australians who can remember such things as a 5 day week, taking the kids to sport on saturday and a family bbq on sunday refer to it as "SerfChoices".

    So, in this context, how is a clicking a link saying "infect me" any more dangerous than clicking a link that says "click here for totally harmless content" I guess you should also consider how many people install crapware by following links that say bologna along the lines of "Your pc is at risk. Click here for ... ".

    It would be grimly appropriate if the industries pushing this kind of litigation were shooting themselves in the foot when the talent pool in 20 years has shrunk down as a result. this is spot on ... isn't their game "maximizing profits"?

    if they tighten the belt too much it stifles learning and enjoyment of music. If you don't enjoy it, you are less likely to buy.

    The conspiracy theorist in me says that they are not this stupid and their end goal is to have some sort of nazification of the Arts. Wanna own/play a guitar kid? You'll need a license. What are you playing? License. Playing in public? Upgrade your license. Singing a protest song? Jail.

    IANAL but this is a valuable aspect of freedom of use.

    I began playing guitar in 1995 and discovered OLGA early on. Hal Leonard (the person) was a great teacher. The Corporation OTOH ... once again knowledge & your right (Hal and many of the great teachers used to call it an obligation) to pass it on once again comes up against the almighty dollar.

    I spent a couple of years teaching in the late 90s. I'll try to avoid waxing lyrical about the philosophy of teaching but music is a LIVING thing. If you restrict it, less will find it and it withers. With regard to learning music (and any other discipline outside of Scientology and ITIL) information wants to be free.

    Congratulations, you can insert Heroes (right? I don't watch the show myself, so I'm not sure) spoilers into an otherwise good post... so what? I don't watch it either but knowing that anyone is "killed permanently" is more of an assurance of a firmly based plot-line rather than a spoiler....unless her best-friend wakes up in ep.1 of the next series to discover that it was all a "terrible dream!".

    or FBi in Sydney, 94.5 - no playlists, one in 4 songs has NEVER gone to air before, one in 2 songs is Australian, supports independent music and film. No annoying FM-voiced wankers ("you could win CASH !!!") and The Naked City with Jay Katz on Saturday mornings is a hoot.

    I thought public schools these days were all about free expression of idea's, thoughts, etc. anyone sitting in the .nsw.edu.au domain already is already subjected to filtering. Just ask your little brother what site he's directed to when he attempts to visit youtube from school. I guess they want to expand the schoolyard to every home and business across the country.

    my fear is that with the current state of play* the China thing could very well happen.

    *one-party state posing as a two-party state with talkback radio providing the entire political agenda. Australia has a very small media market with 95% of the populace being led along by 2 or 3 media moguls.

    Now by stable, do you mean that the manner in which it leaks memory and ultimately crashes is well characterized and predictable?

    haven't seen that on Windows since pre1.5. The latest Ubuntu release seems happy with it (2.0.0.3 OotB).

    anyhow, I grew up on Windows - the solution to what you describe is "throw more RAM at it"

    preamble: this may sound like some OSS fanboi troll-rant, but it is not (check my other comments).

    This is real and (IMHO) the computing experience for many users right-now.

    So are MS trying to pull back users who have turned to an alternative browser, or they are desperately trying to plug the drip drip drip of users who still haven't moved?

    Either way they will have to make a hyperspace leap to get ahead of the curve.

    I began using FF at something like v0.83 and its now mature, secure and stable.

    After occasionally dipping the big toe into linux over the past 5-6 years (Redhat 7.3; Fedora 3, 4, 5), just this week I installed ubuntu 7.04 and have fallen in love with it. Restored a ghost backup of XP to a partition and have booted into it just once.

    IE's CSS hassles should have been fixed years ago - MS really needs to do more to stop the millions of users like me that are dabbling and finding that OSS is more than just a viable alternative.
