Complaints: would it have killed them to add another 4 Xbox machines? Then maybe everyone could have had a chance to play. Could there have been a bit more swag? A DVD and a lanyard tag isn't much. Why give everyone numbered tickets if there wasn't anything to raffle? The three other sites had raffles, although one consolation is that the NYC crew managed to pretty much rock them all in the multiplayer, despite switching people every game or two. (End rant)

(Or at least, as much as you can when dealing with the law...)

The question about "only if the government says you can" doesn't work, because the government doesn't know what to think on these issues. This is where the writing of future history comes in, and where the creative scriptwriting becomes important.

I used to live in Saudi Arabia, and I have to say that the real good boom times for us/uk/fr/de/no/se/etc expats are over. Things kinda stopped being so great after the Gulf War, and even before then. The best time to be in Saudi Arabia (money-wise) was probably around 1975-1990, when there was plenty of money being spread around, put into infrastructure, public spaces, shopping malls, and other things like that.

I haven't been in the country since 1995, but things seem to have gone downhill in terms of culture and wealth distribution. Everyone that I used to know there is gone now, so there would be little point in returning, but I did have some great memories (as everyone growing up has). Some things are prety unique, I thought. Camping in the desert with friends, dealing with the odd sandstorm, and just plain enjoying the warm dry weather.

Of course, there were a sprinkling of bulletin board systems up at the time, and remarkable number of modems out there, too... I was even wardialed twice (realized it later, though)

Don't think that you missed too much by not 'visiting' Saudi Arabia. It is not easy to work there, but generally the support groups between other families are very good. You hit it right on the head with the things you have to watch out for, though. All in all, I wouldn't choose to work there now, and you made your decision with a lot of knowledge of the situation.

March 15 -- Today an Ohio public school classroom was raided by Department Of Media Enforcement (DOME) agents, following a tip that a student was in possesion of two unauthorized screen captures. The captures were reportedly from the popular TV shows, Frivolity (Tuesdays MVE, 9:00PM - 10:00PM) and Chained (Wednesdays DBC, 8:00PM - 9:00PM). Agents stormed the building at 9:47 AM after a tip from an anonymous source said that they had seen the student remove the captures from their bag and look at them for a moment before replacing them in their bag, but didn't get a good enough look at them to tell if they had the seal present on authorized screen captures. During the raid, witnesses reported that the student was surprised at first, but quickly became agitated and was preparing to flee when an agent wrestled the suspect to the floor. Before being escorted out of the building in handcuffs, the student, in tears, mentioned that the 'images' were for use in a manual graphics reproduction class to take place later that day. Two agents attended the class to ensure that no other unauthorized material was present.

When students were questioned about the suspect, one witness mentioned that he had seen the suspect in posession of an optical photographic reproduction device. It is not known at this time whether the device was registered with DOME officials or not.

Posession of unauthorized screencaptures is punishable by up to 6 months in a medium security prison for each infraction, but since the suspect is under 16, the sentence will likely be reduced by as much as 2 months. Traficking in unauthorized screen captures is illegal under the DMCA, which was amended 4 years ago to cover a wider range of devices and revise penalties for noncompliance. Customers who are found in posession of unregistered devices are assesed fines and will have the devices confiscated. Customers found engaging in unauthorized behavior will be fined, have their subscriptions cancelled and may face jail time.

The problems were that the matching criteria was *very* loose, and if you were born on the same day or had a similar surname, you could be removed from the voter rolls... If you want something interesting, see if you can find the Greg Palast report that was on BBC, where he went to interview the polling company. Should be about 15 minutes long.
