For a lot of settings (Corporate, home etc.) allowing random access into your network doesn't serve any purposes. If you need to provide services you can serve them through the firewall or you can make a DMZ outside the firewall but there is no need to allow random access to your network.
That being said I totally agree that OS's need to be more secure but thats just part of the equation to proper network security.
Driven in boston? Are you really trying to tell me you like 95 through the middle of boston? The big dig maybe a lot of things but in the end it does solve some of the major issues.
Minus the giant concrete slabs that seem to fall every now and again....
I believe what I was implying was "it requires far more resources than Microsoft is willing to dedicate". At the end of the day it comes down to a cost benefits analysis. Is it worth fixing this or back porting that at the cost of not developing new features and products. I think you derived your own anti Microsoft spin.
How is that baloney? You use technical data and market data to make a business decision. Do you think for one second if there was big money in it they wouldn't be back porting (which after reading the blog sounds like they did on the "longhorn reset")
I'm not saying its an over night thing but the code has been written and with time and money could be back ported. It's not like they are covering new ground its a matter of money and since they have a brand new OS out with these feature that people are paying money for its a bad business decision.
Make no mistake Microsoft is a business and if it made financial sense to do it they would but since it doesn't they won't. If there where enough people who would pay for DX 10 on XP they'd build it.
Exactly if there was money in back porting DX 10 to XP it would be done already but since they have a new OS out why do it? If there is no revenue coming in from the product in that market space you certainly can't explain assigning resources to it.
Nothing in that link says it's impossible. Hell nothing in there says it that hard it just says that it require far more resources than Microsoft is willing to dedicate. Direct quote from the blog
"At some point, the question "to serve existing customers" or "to get new customers" is a question every business has to ask itself."
There nothing inherently bad about saying its a business decision but don't make it out to be anything other than a business decision.
I'm sure if they wanted to they could get it working on XP but if they did that one of the big incentives for upgrading to Vista (To play DX 10 games) goes out the window.
You've got that right. Even on my little macbook core duo (not even the 2) it runs almost as well as my XP desktop (P4 POS) at work. Even for doing things like developing with visual studio.
The one thing I do have to say is make sure you have lots of ram, XP works best with atleast 768. Although today you can get a mac mini with 2 GB for $850 so its still reasonable.
We usually kick the douchebag in the genitals and move on with our day.... Mass. has inacted a law where we can violate moron's civil liberties if they mention Bucky F*ckin' Dent,Arrone Boone, and of course Bill Buckner.
If its smart enough to shape traffic "per flow" why can't it shape something based on a port or an ip address? I would think it would be easier to analyze all the traffic traveling on a particular port.
if you are hosting a new years eve party (especially if it involves my friends) the cost of the extra booze doesn't even come close to the range it will cost to cover the damage. Not to mention can you realy put a price on seeing your friend passed out head first in a laundry basket?
I'm right handed but I broke my wrist a while back (8+ months) and I had to switch to using the mouse with my left hand. After a while you get used to it... I actually haven't switched back yet. Partially because of the stress it adds to my wrist but also because I've gotten so used to it I haven't desired to go back.
I'd say 95% of those people are running old hardware that doesn't support OSX well. I think you're over estimating the size of the group of people that buy a Mac and then dump OSX for linux or BSD.
I mean seriously how many people are going to dump OSX for a less supported linux or BSD. If you don't like aqua run it in just X mode (personally I like running them side by side). I just see no point in switching.
This is coming from someone who really likes linux but owns 2 Macs.
Actually more than likely its just for the login which buys you more time. You figure they probably have an auto logout feature that activates probably 10-30 minutes after you become inactive. So you have the site log the user in and pop up a browser to the logged in account. What it does require is human intervention within a 10 minute window which means someone has to be around to harvest the money when it apears 24/7.
Maybe they set it up with two modes of operation one where it does the real phishing (for when they are around) and one mode where it just forwards the requests and doesn't steal the pass and key (out drinking).
The IDE-raid doesn't solve all the problems. One of the big ups for tape backup is that you can take it off site. So you either have to copy the raid and move it off site or setup a second set of systems off site.
Either way tapes still hold some value in offsite storage.
You also forget that its much much easier for distributed files systems to handle;-)
The maildir format has a much higher fault tolerance. If something goes wrong there is only one message not a whole mail file to f' up

Gene Hackman and Michael Caine in the same movie, I have my thesis(stands up) I can stop watching TV!!!

My local Starbucks offers IPv4 wireless. As well as everyother hot spot around here so I highly doubt thats going to happen ;-)

It should be totally illegal to listen to a cd on your computer at work .....
How quickly would you quit if that was the case?

Now writting OTOH is another matter

This isn't a opteron-xeon review. Its a Athlon dual core vs. the new intel dual core (i.e. not the P4 line).
I mean hell it says it in the summary.
I was going to mod you up but you didn't provide any examples.
I can still get each issue in print for free. One of the perks of living in a hippy town :-)
