Thanks. I'm not sure why you'd have trouble with the motherboards fitting standard cases, I've been using a brushed aluminum coolmaster wave for ages now and at work I just recently racked an ATX mobo we had laying around into a steel AT case from ages ago and managed to fit it (a few small modifications).

Is striping the motherboard and CPU as simple? I'm actually curious. That's what I like about my PC, the incremental upgrades. I tend to do MB/memory/CPU >> memory >> video/hard drive or some variation depending on where I think I'll get the most performance. I've only ever worked on a Mac laptop and the components I priced where outlandish, but it was a laptop so I didn't think much of it.

I try to keep it in that lower sweet-spot and figure if I do my research I'll get something that performs within the $300-500 for a much more reasonable price.

That happens to me ALL the time! I bought this video camcorder one time that some guys had just stolen some from down at the dock. You know the prices on the docks are really great! Tons of stuff coming through them too! Anyway, so I paid like $80. Which was fricking great! Super-cheap. But I was busy working and stuff so I just slipped it out of sight until I could set it up later. I lifted it up to feel the weight to make sure it was real. The guy was a little weird but the wrapping and price was tops! I never figured out how to use it and the return policy really sucked (I think he threatened me) but I did admire his wrapping job! Easily the best brick I have ever bought!

This is how it's been for as long as I can remember and once in a while you do run into some asshole like this (these?) and muster what public ill-will you can and it winds up costing the business.

There's nothing noble about selling a product and not honoring the sale. If, as a business, you want to do this you'd better crack each one of those boxes yourself. Verify it works and contains the product(s) as listed on the box while the customer is there. That's reasonable, but it will cut into your revenue and inconvenience the customer.

I typically build out my own systems ever 2 years. I used to be pretty hardcore about it but I'm getting older and busier and lazier. I realize this leaves me behind the curve since I used to play competitively and talk wasn't the only thing the shiniest card you could afford would get you.

More recently when I do get around to building a new system I tend to go higher spec in the memory/cpu/drive areas (at least one high performance drive) and then branch out with the graphics card being a lower-midrange job after I've been able to do lots of research to be sure I'm getting the best bang for my buck. This is the kind of card that makes me think it's time to do some upgrades and once I do I can ignore things again for a while. I might not need all the horsepower right away, but at least I'll have decent performance for the next 2 or so years and by then...there will be another. It's economical and still keeps you slightly above the curve.

Re-reading my post I see some blatant flaws in my logic anyway, like my use of inequity. From a sales POV I get the segmentation. From a free market point of view I think I get a little fuzzy. I tend to agree with you on the regionization point, as someone who would never buy a Russian (etc) language version of program regardless of the price difference (just too inconvenient) but I realize that this drives the cost of bringing the product to market up and still doesn't address English speaking economies that can't bear USD or worse yet GBP (which as a US citizen I'd be out-raged to pay).

In our culture I wonder if the strongest and the smartest still survive the longest. I wonder what it is in value that we lack (as society, as elderly). When I look at old people I wonder what I'll be like when I get there. Is our culture juvenile or are our elderly simply uninterested in participation? There is something to be said for the value of lessons which really are only taught by time. Young people are good at spontaneous creativity, passion, learning, lots of things but most all the people I've known missed some fundamental understanding about life.

Usually I like swearing and getting charged up but if we charged 1st world prices on everything we'd effectively cut less rich markets off at the knees and/or encourage the entrenchment of piracy as the market naturally adjusts itself.

People got caught trying to work an angle. Hopefully Valve will work with them instead of against them (paying the difference is much more reasonable then locking a customer out).

  21. Just to jump off a cliff here... on Will Wright Opines That Wii Is the Only Next-Gen Console · · Score: 1

Let me preface this by saying I don't have anything against any consoles. But you mention computing power (among other things) as the reason Will is wrong. But if that's the case the PC (I'm not trolling, bear with me) is truly the Next-Gen console, but of course that isn't the case. So considering innovation in the consoles is not their primary focus (I'd say over-all game experience is) then the Wii truly is the most innovative Next-Gen console. Really the only innovative Next-Gen console, which is admirably risky considering game is king on the console. But Nintendo has been in this game for a long time and I'd imagine they are pretty good at doing what they do.

Either way I don't see Will's statement devaluing 360 or PS3 any. Console gamers like their consoles and I don't think good graphics will be going out of style any time soon.
