We all knew this was coming, but would this app get this kind of exposure had the MPAA not cracked down on those BT tracker sites?
It is just like Scour net (web based/centralized), then napster (p2p/centralized), then kazaa (p2p/decentralized). Every time they go after a technology, they force it to evolve into the next phase. They will never win IMHO.
The eBay trolls have killed the auction, but I just noticed the current high bidder is "www-smileyspider-com" a user that was registered today that points to a website selling stuff. So you mean to tell me, that people are leveraging auction stunts like this by registering fake usernames just to get some free marketing?
I am in the same boat. I am looking at top teir schools. The admission dates for the top teir seem to be different, just as they are in undergrad, usually requiring an application in the early for for teh next year's admission.
I breifly looked at the PhD program admission forms for Princeton and Penn/Wharton, and to my surprise, found they were only like one page long. They asked for school history/GPA and publications, etc.
I think they primarily base consideration on Field of Specialization (for PhD) and GRE scoores. So now I am trying my best to study for teh GRE using Kaplan resources. They have a good review book with a CD ROM. I also got their Word Power book that is intended to give words that are tested often on the GRE. The math in the GRE is easier than on the SAT and just requires that you "remember" what you learned all those years ago.
It could not be beyond the wit of engineering to produce a roulette wheel whose outcome, if not random, had such a small deviation from randomness that it would take a very long time to detect it.
Shhhh! They did, it's called the 0. (you did actually reference it also)
I have to agree that this smells like an ad. These types of services have been around forever and this one is not exceptionally better than any of the others like ofoto, snapfish, etc...Just mho.
Does your mom charge you for Thanksgiving dinner? No, of course not. So we all get to "fix" our families pc's for free because it's what we do.
To escape from my neices, I sat down at my Dad's laptop. He had about 30 icons running in the taskbar. (weatherbug was the least troublesome). I knew I had to download some apps like AdAware and HackThis, etc...so I went to dial up. The computer tried dialing into some country in Africa. I mean, come on, ATT doesn't have any access numbers a bit closer?
I finally decided that my neices were easier to deal with...
Science and religion have been at polar opposites since civilization began. We'd be much further along scientifically if it hadn't been for religion oppressing things like a solar-centric universe, stem cell research, heck even the concept of 0 (zero)! When was the last time religion allowed a person to walk after being paralyzed for 20 years.
Gartner reports that phishing scams cost banks and credit-card companies $10.2 billion.
In related news, some anonymous guy using randomly generated numbers, estimates that tech employees who visit/. during working hours have cost corporate America in excess of $1.5 trillion since September.
We did something like this under contract from teh record labels. We placed drm on windows media files and distributed them on p2p networks. At first, silently delivering licenses to the media player to encourage seeding, then flipping the switch to require a payment before play.
It was easily defeated by the fact that people don't download Windows Media Player files for audio tracks. Almost always they get mp3s w no drm. No mp4, that may be a different story. Of course, you can "wrap" an mp3 file with drm as well, but it should suffer the same fate as those files on the networks that are loops/screeching audio that only have a small inpact on the network. Just mho.
fyi, it turned my stomach to implement such a system and we have abandoned drm completely since then.
Mandelbrot fractal sets are cool, but I think the first fractal discovered should be considered phi, aka the Golden Ratio. It may not be derived from the same mathmatics, but the end result is the same...
My friend emailed me yesterday, he said I could have a Segway for a one month demo if I came to meet him in Union Square where the CityStreets people were showing them.
I was excited at first, but I couldn't figure out how I was going to get it home. Then I realized I may have to drive it home and it suddenly was not that exciting of an offer. I just wanted to crash it into the walls of my apartment for a month, not actually ride it in public.
I hope they don't even consider trying to Patent this.
I remember in custom Quake 1 maps, I would see bill board advertisements. Really strange actually, walking around a zombie infested underworld like Gloom Keep and there is a big yellow Nikon ad.
Agreed! I think the illegal modders should sue for infringing on their intellectual property rights. The existing xbox media centers are great. Plus, they have built in support for playback of dvds where the unmodded xbox requires you to plunk down $30 for a "dvd playback kit" that is basically just a remote as the system already supports dvd playback, it is just "locked".
AC, yes, I was joking to a certain degree and was def MS bashing. However, I am a MS developer exclusively. The truth is they LIE in their product documentation with regards to their DRM Licensing server.
Just to give clarification....we were running Licensing server v1 which worked fine. There was a feature in the new release which we would have liked to use, but we still needed to be able to deliver v1 licenses which the server said it could do. However, they failed to mention, not a single player in existences could request a v1 license from teh higher version server. The updated server uniquely identifies players/computers which you cannot turn off.
There are MANY instances of things like this when dealing with MS and DRM.
They had problems with the Original South Park movie TITLE that the cencors wouldn't allow. Then they changed it to "South Park: bigger, longer, and uncut". They claim the censors didn't get the double entendre in time...I didn't either the first few times I heard the title.
After searching everywhere for the legendary "Wang Computer" tshirt, I decided to fall abck on teh second geekiest computer company to get a shirt from, Cray. I couldn't find a shirt through the normal outlets (eBay/ThinkGeek), so I called them directly. The woman that answered was glad to help and shipped out, not a tshirt, but a very nice collared shirt that makes it look like I work for Cray! I wer it to all the conventions and I become cool(er).
My dad is a machinist and we have a small (hehe) cnc lathe in our garage. We have a ton of aluminum stock, up to ten ft. He's not a terrorist (i think).....brb, somone's knocking at my door... > > >dropped carrier

The previous high bidder was "wwwpitronixcouk"...

A few GOOD people still work at SCO.

"...a group of people who stole ... a passport-forging facility in Bulgaria."
I'm sure they mean they stole a DeskJet and a scanner.
I believe there are quite a few inventions that have been stumbled upon without any understanding about mathematical formulas whatsoever.
Exactly! Like the Easy Bake Oven.

>>The Daily Show is the only news channel myself and many people i know watch on a regular basis.
That statement is one that the Daily Show itself states is horribly wrong if ppl's only news source is that show. Stewart has said this a few times.

I was in a similar situation as yourself as far as money and job scarcity. But I had to do something much worse than build a simple Adult web site...
I had to deploy Microsoft Windows Media DRM for one of the major record labels.
I still shudder to think of those days. I fondly look back on my days as a Las Vegas Crack Whore in comparison.
