If I got one of these graviton ray guns, could I get my site, http://flame.dnsart.com//.ed? I can see it now: Programmer killed in moronic advertising stunt involving gravitron ray beam
And then people can reply with 300 comments of: It's a graviton beam you moron.
But that won't be enough to take my server down. Nothing can harm a linux box, especially at 256 kilobits/second!
The abacus is so fscking simple that we keep looking for deeper meaning.
I honestly think that the next encryption standard will be pig-latin or ceaser-cypher based. Those that break the encryption will still be called "criminals" and "anti-capitalists". Whoever "makes" the standard will sue, and the source code, or napkin drawings, will be confiscated and kept from the general public.
That said, it would take us a lot longer to crack a ceaser-cypher than it would take us to crack a DES messsage. Security in Simplicity.
Java isn't as fast a C/C++ because it is interpreted bytecode. Just In Time compilers help this speed problem, but don't eliminate it because they can't do code optimizations that would slow the compile.
So, if I understand this correctly,.NET is a java clone, implementing JIT, that only runs on ONE platform!?
The only "official" C++ compiler you can get for winshit is 4 years old and aging!?
Before discovering the glory that is Linux, I programed in VB and VC++. I am now programming Java server applications designed to run on a Linux server for my first job. The winshit 2k workstation that I'm forced to use is utterly pathetic and I often use VNC to program on the server.
Microsoft just can't keep up with Open Source Programmers. We are unbound by commercial goals, and we share all that we make. M$ will be reduced to "So easy, no wonder its #1!" within a few years. Mark my words.
What nearly everyone else here has mentioned is that if you don't agree to it, you are bound by copyright law. If you don't like the GPL, don't take advantage of the rights that it gives you. Simple?
What was the name of that electronic-compents store that used to be everywhere until the government mandated 20 chanells in CB radios? They went bankrupt nearly over night when they could no longer sell their warehouses full of radios.
Government mandation of technology is crap, utter crap. Government declaration of hackers as terrorists, thereby detracting attention and effort away from preventing real terrorism. It's crap, utter crap. Our governments' reaction may not have ended as many innocent lives as those of terrorsts, but its long-term effects are much more severe.
Does Linux take advantage of such a chip? My next computer will either be a mac laptop or a sun workstation.
Either way, I'll be running Linux. Which system is recommended??
Would Solaris or Mac OS X provide <gasp>superior</gasp> performance on their native platforms or Linux? Are Sun's kernel modifications for "Sun Linux" being reintegrated into Debian GNU/Linux's Sun version?
Feel free to send me an email (SHEENmaster at flame.dnsart.com) if you know a lot on the subject.
I guess this was a bit off-topic, but I hope it spawns an interesting discussion just the same.
.... to keep slim. Do you think that a diet consisting of 99% coke and 1% beef is easy!?
Actually, with the smooth refreshing taste of coke, the real stuff not vanilla or that diet shit, it's a piece of cake. A couple dozen cokes for breakfast, followed by a plain wendy's triple with cheese for lunch. Then a couple dozen cokes until steak for dinner and a couple dozen cokes to keep me awake long enough to get some work done.
This is not sarcasm. This diet REALLY works. Visit http://flame.dnsart.com/ for absolutely no mention of this diet. GARUNTEED.
I have been using Linux for well over 3 years. Until I started my first job back in june, I had gone a full year without using winshit for anything of any importance. I just recently switched to debian, and while the install was a bitch, I appreciate the "cold truth" approach of it.
My next computer will either be a Mac or a Sun system. How much hardware is Linux compatible with? Does it use all 128 bits of the processor, or just the first 32?
Can I run OS X software through X? Does XDarwin support gnome? Is the kernel source available, or do I have to wait for apple to support my hardware? Has forte for Java been ported to it?
Most importantly: Does it have an automated package installer like apt-get?

If I could have that and M$ Word, nothing could stop me! lol. The Abiword, KWord, and OpenOffice people need to get some sort of grammar check in their projects. I am setting up an winshit NT system in bochs just to run Word. BTW, Ximian Evolution is SO much better than Outlook.
to order. And as a special bonus, we'll have the terry cloth bath robe autographed by our former CEO. That's right, you get two hot-rod kits, and an autographed terry cloth bath robe! For FREE, that's right, no charge. You will then recieve a new kit every month for a mere pittance of $1!
Total cost is $0 plus $100 "super deal" tax, and $29.99 shpping and handling per kit, plus $200 "last minute" tax and $100 "autographed" tax and $29.99 shipping and handling.

My server has a dumb terminal connected to one of its serial ports. It is a single-line model with an integrated keyboard. I set the cron daemon to send a message to it, with abbreviations that tell me if anything is wrong. The kernel could also do such a thing.
First of all, puting winshit on a real computer, with Linux on a virtual machine will yield an incredible speed difference. The Linux system will have less ram, and less processing power.
The Linux vm will be affected by winshit's memory management and other issues. If the winshit system crashes, Linux will come down with it.
Look into Broadcast 200, midi synth, and audacity. All of which are included with Linux Mandrake.
Buy a real computer for it to make Linux run faster.
How did that get modded funny? I am serious here. My win2k system at work (1.5ghz, 600 something mb of ram) is slow as hell. I move Forte to "real time" and my ogg vorbis player starts to skip! Funny how Forte runs perfectly on my 1ghz Linux system.
I think I'll buy some old lappies for my robotics projects. Nothing will ever match the thrill I had five years ago, dialing bulliten boards, 98% no longer existed, late into the night. I guess I was a bit behind the times, but making my own terminal emulator in BASIC to scan through the whole list I had on my 2400 kb/s(or was it baud?) modem while I slept was loads of fun.
For those that care, I'm now 16 years old and programming in Java for my first job. I am running a wargame server on torch.dnsart.com and my own programming group called Flame Entertainment.
The BBS days may be gone for good(and had been for several years when I found them), but their spirit will find a new home. I will never make another suffer through dos, though anyone under my legal custody will learn to use zsh before gaining access to X.
That is my testimonial. Take it at face value, or call me nuts. But that is what happened.
My first laptop was a compaq 286. The thing may have been shit, but it had faster response times than my winshit system at work. I wish I still had that thing. My only complaint was that the lappie was completely sealed off with no screws or clasps to get inside.
I guess that illustrates the point of this article.
She couldn't understand winshit, so I installed icewm(the computer only has 40mb of ram), and basic software. She has had no trouble with it.
Whenever it needs a new program, I can fix it remotely through ssh(the second most important program, IMHO, for internet communication, just behind telnet:).
Linux, like UNIX, was designed to be easy for the casual user, and powerfull for the advanced one.
At work monday, I had to route an email through my private smtp server to get it through to a roadrunner customer. Unlike the customers, we don't have the option of simply boycotting roadrunner.

The rulers of a society themselves have little or nothing to do with the outcome. Socialism is simply totalitarian democracy. Communism is simple totalitarian Republiscism.
Assuring freedom for the individual should come paramount in a society. Followed by freedom for corporations and governments. The individual should always come first.
We should break trade negotiations with China for the simple fact that they are totalitarian. It isn't an issue of race, but an issue of civil liberties. A good friend of mine is Chinese.
Why do we claim to be an enlightened nation, yet actively trade with China? They need us much more than we need them.
One of the slogans for communism is that with everyone equal, there is no slavery and no discrimination. If you look at it, all but those in the high levels of government are slaves. If you look at it, all but those in the high levels of government are discriminated against.
I think the console log(in zsh) speaks for ittself. Lol, I'm j/k. Those of you who look closely enoughw will see why each of the files is a mere 96 byts long.

The Linux web browser Galeon has support for removing popup ads that works perfectly. You can also disable java and javascript if you so desire.
Another usefull feature, is the ability to have it identify ittself as MSIE to webservers. Hotmail doesn't like non-MSIE users changing passwords.
I run my own mailserver, and I have yet to recieve a single piece of spam on it.

I blame the former everytime Forte4Java goes on a flicker fest at work.
I blame the latter for not updating J++ since beta 1, forcing me to use such a powerful app as forte on such a shitty OS such as Windows.
All I can say is:
Forte damn well better run as good the iBook I'm about to get as it does on my Linux server.
I'd give the project lik $20 or so if they would place a BIG sign on mars, readable from orbit, that says:
<Power to The User>
Then again, they would probably misfire, and I would be out $20, unless they refund donations.
You poor misguided M$ supporter.
