I work in the suburbs and HATE it. I HAVE to drive to work, there are no restaurants, there are no bars, there are no young people, I have to deal with traffic, I have to deal with sprawl and I have to deal with strip malls. Its terrible.
MY ideal, wake up, get ready walk to the subway station take it to work. I'm there in 20 minutes without having to drive, and I got to read the newspaper (or a book) on they way in. Work and have a fantastic lunch in the thousands of restaurants around the city that I can WALK to. After work, WALK to a happy hour place with my co-workers, have dinner and some drinks, and take a taxi home. I can also walk to the hundreds of retail stores so If I need a new pair of jeans, i'm not stuck with just macy's. I can go umpteen different shows, concerts, restaurants, coffee shops everything is close and easy to get to.
Now dont think that I'm one of those people that hate driving. I LOVE to drive, I hate HAVING to drive. Suburbs are evil, I applaud companies that stay in the cities.
ha ha ha.... No, but buildings built in 1900 have pretty thick walls (before the advent of steel frame buildings). Between my living room and dining room is a 3.5 foot thick wall, I added 6 inches assuming the outside wall was thicker.
Exactly what I was just thinking. OTA broadcasts work well in regions that have good radio broadcast reception. Unfortunately, these broadcasts are limited to the largest (and most dense) cities. Am I really going to be able to pick up HDTV signals in my 30 story apartment building behind a 4 foot thick wall of concrete, I doubt it, I can hardly get AM radio working. Having a way to get the digital output from my cable box to my computer would save the day!
That makes no sense. If you really wanted to go to that first show, you'd have to dress up like a poor version of Neo out of the salvation army. You'd also have to get a light saber and some hairy hobbit feet and show up at the theater 2 weeks in advance. Then, to show your dedication to the hollywood machine, you'd camp out there on the cold hard concrete in a pile of vomit and urine alongside all the homeless people. Entertainment would be staged Trinity vs. Obi wan kenobi duels refereed by Bilbo and heartfelt performances of fan fiction by overweight people wearing leather and have for some reason never discovered a razor. After leaving society for a fortnight and subsisting solely on the leftover popcorn that people have handed you in your sorry state, you'd get word through someone that you've been fired because you havent been to work for a while. What do you care, you're going to be the first to see "The One Star Matrix - Extra Super (tm)." Finally, the day has arrived and as you run into the theater cheering you feel complete. 3 hours later, you're on slashdot saying "The movie sucked" picking with biblical detail on all the minutae that really didnt matter at all to the gist of the movie.
Meanwhile, I've recently gotten promoted since for some reason I was the only one showing up to work. Then on release day I head to the theater about 15 hours after you leave it walk up, buy a ticket to watch an entertaining movie in the comfort that I am not lame.
Do you have any information on this? What DVD Players support this? Will it work if I burn an AAC file to a cd and try and play it? This could be really cool
Hmm....odd how your _average_ cost of attending a movie is $15! That hardly makes sense. The 2 most expensive cities in the US charge about $10 for a movie ticket, most other places charge less. So either there is some place that is not NYC or SF that I've never heard of that charges $50 for tickets and sells lots of them, or your approximation is a huge exaggeration.
The average cost is probably closer to $6 when you include matinee prices and all those places that are not NYC or SF.
There exist car MP3 players. Time to upgrade... again.
Yes they do exist. Unfortunately, my car (and most cars i've seen) would look horrible with a 3rd party unit jammed inside a space that wont quite fit. I dont think car mp3 players will be successful until the car manufacturers have them come installed along with. Remember the time when cars came with tape decks? You had to use that audio-to-cassette conversion thing, it was a bitch.
And what about everyone elses cd players and what not. CD's are here for a while, i'd say. The replacement? Well thats simple. A firewire port in my car/receiver/audio playing device into which I plug my iPod and have all my music.
On the flipside, records are coming back, I just bought two turntables and a mixer so who knows. You cant quite mix a beat with mp3s (though Final Scratch looks very promising).
A really good way to see where the computer industry is heading is by watching where Apple has already gone. Last week, about 5 years after Apple announced the death of the floppy, Dell came along and agreed.
Last year, Apple announced the death of the CRT. Soon enough, others will follow suit, have you used one of those cinema displays?! Its amazing that we used to actually work at a point using a CRT.
What is apple doing now? Well, its the "Year of the Notebook" So maybe in 5 - 10 years, it will be shocking that anyone had a gigantic box sitting under his/her desk. Who knows?
what I dont get is why you're saying 700-800 MB CDs are going away? I mostly use my burner for burning audio cds, will my car cd player play anything else?
See, thats what sucks about automatic pourers. Everytime I walk into a place that has stoppers or uses automated machines I walk right out. Since I live in the heart of San Francisco, I'll usually go out every night of the week. Overpouring is a good thing, drinks that are made "Correctly" rarely taste good, in my opinion. In the case of automated pouring, you also dont get the relationship with a bartender you can normally get which leads to perks, of course.
a) Using top shelf liquor instead of Absolut b) Free drinks c) free cover d) staying after 2 e) introduction to girls f) line priveleges
Granted it costs the bar a little more, but thats how you build a clientele that comes back often and brings their friends which leads to further long-term profits. Every good bartender knows that. Its just like those coffee shops that have one click espresso drinks. Those suck, there is just no love in the drink and you can taste it.
Why couldnt you say "Sex"? Its not offensive, and granted Sex is probably one of those mysterious things (like showers) to most of our community, but I think everyone on here is OK with seeing the "E" in sex.
You pay a small premium for a stylish design, which is worth it to many people (e.g., people who wear nice athletic gear or drive Mitsubishis).
Wow...I never had heard of Mitsubishis being considered 'stylish'. German cars, yes, but a standard Japanese car?. 'Nice athletic gear,' well, perhaps stylish to your standard frat boy or hip hop artist, but most people would consider "stylish" being something like Kenneth Cole, Armani, Gucci, D&G etc. etc.
At least thats my definition of style....shoot...i just realized that if thats style, i'm the lamest person around! ha ha:)
Perfect! I'd love to live in SimCity!
This is what is wrong with america.

Call me a clueless luddite, but what else would A|X mean than armani exchange?

Which part of the word "Japan" did you not understand?
Touché

An easy workaround is to log into passport via MS.
1) go to msn.com
2) click "Sign In"
3) Sign In
4) Click hotmail
you're all set
