  1. Will the RIAA latch onto these? on Sanyo Develops Corn-Based Biodegradeable CD · · Score: 1

  4. Apple on the upswing on iTunes for Windows Reviews · · Score: 1

With the right mix of cooperation with Windows and competition, Apple could be on a major comeback trajectory. I just downloaded and tried the itunes store for Windows and it's great! Now, all Apple has to do is come out with a kickass line of sub-$1000 systems with big hard drives, Superdrives and the Panther OS, and they have a chance at swiping some Windows mindspace as Microsoft dawdles away with their ever-shifting release of Longhorn.

  5. Seeing science properly... on Wanted: a Real Science Channel · · Score: 1

A science channel should dispel the common view of science with a big "s" and looked at as a big body of knowledge. Science is an ongoing, systematic inquiry into the laws that govern nature. A good science channel should demonstrate again and again how natural human curiosity leads to study, research, peer review and dissemination. Just think about when you go to a hospital to have symptoms checked out - how many man-hours of study, how many attempted diagnoses, and how many people died on the road to empirical knowledge.

The Commodore was instant-on. Very compact. All peripherals were plug and play - truly - no drivers needed at all. The machine itself was cheap, and it took any joystick scrounged from an Atari 2600. After a while, though, my Commodore existed for only one purpose - to "finish" the game Elite (make it to the rank of Elite). As soon as I did that, down it went into my parents' basement to gather dust and hopefully become a collector's item. (or to perhaps be resurrected by pencil-neckedmecha eons hence like in AI)

Their mice and keyboards are known to be pretty well made, even stylish. But can input devices enhance an image of "cool?" Apple is "cool" mostly because they do the whole package - design an excellent OS and hardware and sell both. Other than the abovementioned input devices, where is the opportunity for "cool" going to come from? And as for placements in popular shows - does this mean that from now on computer screens will start showing how computers actually work? After all, showing a spy breaking into a computer by typing "override password" isn't exactly representing how an MS operating system looks and operates, is it? Any "coolness" created by let's say Dell, HP or other system builder will redound more to them than to Microsoft itself.

I never liked the "machines are using humans as energy cells" aspect of the plot. There are far better sources of energy the machines could have used, such as nuclear, geothermal, etc. I always thought wouldn't it have been cooler if the machines were imprisoning humans and using their brains in a sort of massive computing grid? That the machines needed our collective brainpower for some task, and the purpose of the Matrix is to keep all of those human brains humming along and doing their machine-appointed task in the backround.

A friend of mine, still living at home at the age of 29, got laid off from a major entertainment firm over two years ago. Got a six-month severance package, with benefits, AND unemployment insurance. Decided to wait a couple of months to really look for a job. Then the Sept 11, 2001 attacks really finished off the job market. Look, everyone's free to live their life as they see fit, but someone who collects that much money and doesn't seem to care about working is crapping on everyone that got a measly package and WANTS to work. He's even turned his nose up at fairly decent paying temp work ($15-$20) an hour, because it "wasn't what he wanted to do." So he's hurting his own chances of getting another job with a HUGE gap in his employment history. And setting himself up to not have the resources to start a family and retire well. He doesn't realize that these are peak earning years for us. In effect, he's retired at the age of 29 with not much in the way of assets. I'm sure he'll be working well into his 70's...
